Disorders Which Can Be Treated With The Help Of Colorectal Surgery!

Disorders Which Can Be Treated With The Help Of Colorectal Surgery!

Colorectal surgery deals with the disorders of the rectum, anus and colon. Another name of colon is ‘large intestine’. These three body parts form the last stages of the digestive process. When the human waste passes through the colon, its salt and water are extracted before it exits the body as human excreta.

Common Colorectal disorders are:-

  1. Haemorrhoids
  2. Anorectal Abscess
  3. Anal fistula
  4. Anal fissure
  5. Rectal Prolapse
  6. Surgical Constipation
  7. Pilonidal Sinus
  8. Proctitis
  9. Pruritus Ani

All these diseases are:

  • Cause of significant patient discomfort & disability
  • Major effect on overall quality of life
  • Both men and women are equally affected
  • Symptoms increase with age

Important Clinical Features of Anorectal Diseases are:

  1. Bleeding
  2. Pain
  3. Altered bowel habit
  4. Discharge
  5. Prolapse
  6. Pruritus(itching
  7. Loss of weight

Bowel habits after colorectal surgery
Many patients report cases of diarrhoea, leakage of stool or gas, urgency to use the toilet and a feeling of insufficient evacuation of faeces. Relax; these conditions are not going to last forever. Your rectum and anus are adjusting to new conditions after this surgery. These organs may take six to twelve months to adjust to new bowel habits.

Is there a need to take a laxative or stool softener?
There is no need to take laxatives after a colorectal surgery. Drink lots of water to make your stool softer and easy to pass. If there is a water deficiency in your body, then it may lead to your faeces becoming hard. In that case, take milk of magnesium, colace etc.

Activities post surgery
You can continue with your normal schedule after this surgical procedure. Carry on running, jogging, exercising, climbing up the stairs etc. even after your surgery. Gastroenterologists recommend that patients should desist from lifting loads weighing more than 10 pounds so that there are no post surgery complications.

Diet after colorectal surgery
Avoid spicy and heavy to digest meals after your surgery. Once the intestines begin working normally, you can continue having your spicy food. Chew your food well to aid its digestion.

Returning to work after colorectal surgery
Most people are back to their work after taking a break of 2-5 days. If the surgery is pretty detailed, you may have to take a break of up to a month. Patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery may have to take a rest of 2- 4 weeks before they report back to work. Take it easy before slipping into your regular schedule. If working hurts after your surgery, don’t do it. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a General Surgeon.

DIABETES AND THE RETINA! How can people with diabetes protect their vision?

DIABETES AND THE RETINA! How can people with diabetes protect their vision?

DIABETES AND THE RETINA! How can people with diabetes protect their vision?

The IMPORTANCE of early treatment

Although a person's vision may be good, changes taking place in the retina may require treatment. Most sight loss due to diabetes is preventable if treated early. The earlier the treatment is given the more effective it is.

In a nutshell: Early diagnosis is vital.

Annual retinal screening appointment is quintessential.

Worsening of vision may not necessarily mean diabetic retinopathy. It may simply be a problem that can be rectified with glasses.

Vision lost to diabetic retinopathy is sometimes irreversible. Women with diabetes who become pregnant should have a comprehensive dilated eye exam as soon as possible. Additional exams during pregnancy may be needed.

Multiple studies have shown that controlling diabetes slows the onset and worsening of diabetic retinopathy. Other trials have also demonstrated that controlling elevated blood pressure and cholesterol can reduce the risk of vision loss among people with diabetes.

Treatment for diabetic retinopathy is often delayed until it starts to progress to a complicated or irreversible stage. Comprehensive frequent dilated eye exams are needed more frequently as diabetic retinopathy becomes more severe. People with a high risk of developing complications may need a comprehensive dilated eye exam as often as every month.

To summarize, early diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy is important.

Don't wait for the vision to deteriorate to have an eye test.

Inform your eye specialist in case you notice changes to your vision.

Feel free to ask questions or express fears about your treatment.

Strict control of sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol reduce the risk of diabetes-related sight loss.

Smoking increases your risk of diabetes-related sight loss.

Hi, Hollow cheeks can be a result of aging. As you grow older, your face muscles lose their normal tone and elasticity. The result is sagging skin on your face, wrinkles and hollow cheeks. Failure to eat a healthy diet, dehydration or exposure to excessive sun may also contribute to hollow cheeks. Engaging in regular exercises that work out your face muscles can help prevent or lessen the prominence of hollow cheeks. -Cheek inflation- It is performed by holding your mouth closed and filling it with air. Begin by moving the air under your upper lip and hold it there for 10 seconds before moving it to your left cheek followed by your right cheek. Be sure that you hold the air for 10 seconds in each position. -Exercise With a Smile-It is performed by looking into a mirror and smiling while keeping your mouth closed. Follow this exercise by wrinkling your nose to help stimulate the muscles located under your cheek. -Cheek lifting-The ‘cheek lifting’ exercise entails lifting your cheeks by smiling as you press down on the lower part of your eye socket using your index fingers. You can also tone the facial muscle beneath your eyes by performing eye exercises. With your mouth open, pull your upper lip inwards. Then, while looking upwards, narrow your eyes and place your fingers just below the lower eyelids. Gently press downwards as you try to close your eyes. Hold this position for 4 to 5 seconds, release and do five to 10 repetitions. The facial yoga exercises work out all muscles of the face and help eliminate sagging facial skin and wrinkles. -Our eyes often sink in with age, resulting in an unsightly appearance. This exercise will help tone the skin around your eyes to help achieve a more youthful look. Sit in a comfortable chair with your eyes closed. Keep your eyes closed and move your eyeballs as if you were looking as far up as possible followed by looking down as far as possible. Repeat 10 to 15 times. Another eye exercise is performed by closing your eyes and lifting your eyebrows up as far as possible to help stretch the skin of your eyelids. You should hold this position for about 10 seconds and repeat 10 times.

Custard Apple (Sharifa) - Amazing Health Benefits You Must Know!

Custard Apple (Sharifa) - Amazing Health Benefits You Must Know!

Custard apple, popularly known as 'sharifa' or 'sitaphal' in India, is liked by people of all age groups. Though it can be eaten as raw fruit, custard apple is widely used as an ingredient in the form of desserts, smoothies, shakes, and snacks. But, do you know that besides its delicious taste, custard apple also exerts numerous health benefits?

Well yes, custard apple is full of anti-oxidants and vitamins which help the body fight many diseases. Also, it has loads of potassium, vitamin A, copper, phosphorus, fiber, calcium - the list is endless. The high anti-oxidant properties are excellent for skin, heart, bones and blood pressure. The copper content in custard apple helps cure constipation, indigestion problems and gastrointestinal infections such as diarrhoeaLet us take an insight as to why you should consume 'sitaphal' this season.

  1. Keeps your heart healthy: Custard apples are high in potassium and magnesium, both of which are essential for keeping cardiac diseases at bay and controlling blood pressure levels. Also, vitamin B6 and dietary fibre present in custard apple help to keep the blood cholesterol levels normal, thereby reducing the incidence of cardiac arrest and other heart ailments considerably.
  2. Reduces Asthma: Vitamin B6 also acts as a defensive shield, protecting individuals from inflammation of the bronchioles (which may often give rise to asthma and breathing problems).
  3. Prevent Diabetes: Custard apple is a rich source of vitamin C, potassium, iron, magnesium, and dietary fibre, all of which help reduce the risk of type-2 diabetes. They regulate the blood glucose level. However, for maximum benefits make sure to consume the fruit in moderate amounts.
  4. Helps In Weight Gain: Custard apple, with its high-calorie content, is an ideal choice for people who are underweight and trying frantically to put on some weight.
  5. Perfect For Pregnant Women: Custard apple is a wonder-fruit for pregnant women. Being a rich source of dietary fibre, copper, and vitamin B6, custard apple goes a long way to alleviate the symptoms of constipation and morning sickness (especially nausea) in pregnant women. When consumed regularly during pregnancy, it helps in producing more breast milk. Custard apple also contributes significantly towards the development of the brain, nervous system and immune system of the foetus.
  6. Cures arthritis: Magnesium present in custard apple maintains a healthy balance of fluids and electrolytes in the body. This removes the excess of fluids and acids in the joints which leads to inflammation. The end result is reduced risks of arthritis and rheumatism.
  7. Prevents Skin-Aging: Custard apple is a rich source of antioxidants and protects the skin from the damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals are tiny reactive oxygen molecules that can cause damage to your skin. Custard apple has the ability to fight free radicals thereby, preventing the skin from becoming prone to skin-aging, acne, psoriasis, and eczema. It enhances the production of collagen proteins, thereby maintaining skin elasticity and youthfulness.
  8. Prevents Skin Diseases: The active compound 'Acetogenin' present in custard apple, contributes towards minimizing the incidence of skin cancer. Also, custard apple acts as a natural moisturizer and a detoxifier, keeping the skin hydrated with the elimination of toxins that can be harmful to the skin.

While the health benefits of custard apple are immense, the seeds of this fruit are harmful and should never be consumed. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Bladder Pain - 8 Major Causes Behind It!

Bladder Pain - 8 Major Causes Behind It!

Bladder is an organ of the lower abdomen which stores urine. Though it is a problem common to both men and women, women are two times more prone to be affected than men.

The following are some of the causes that give rise to bladder pain.

  1. Bacterial infection or urinary tract infection is one of the common causes of bladder pain. Women are more likely to encounter uninary tract infection. It occurs if bacteria sneak in through the urethra leading to develop an infection in the urinary tract, which in turn affects the urinary bladder.
  2. Sometimes bladder stones can also give rise to bladder pain.
  3. Painful Bladder Syndrome is yet another cause, wherein your bladder holds pee after your kidneys have filtered it but before you pee it out. This condition causes pain and pressure below your belly button, causing pain in the bladder.
  4. Chronic pelvic pain is pain in the area below your bellybutton and between your hips that lasts six months or longer. There are multiple causes for such pain.
  5. Bladder cancer is another possible cause of bladder pain. If uncontrolled cancer cells are formed in the bladder, then it gives rise to bladder cancer. Bladder cancer is one of the most common cancers and generates unbearable pain in the bladder.
  6. Interstitial cystitis is another condition which gives rise to severe bladder pain. This condition is more commonly seen in women. The bladder becomes inflamed and irritated and the pain gets worse when the bladder is full or during menstruation. It is a chronic condition.
  7. Urethral stricture is another cause of bladder pain. Men are likely to be more affected by this condition. In this case, the urethra becomes inflamed and narrow creating difficulties to pass urine.
  8. Yeast infection also known as, Torulopsis is another cause of bladder pain.

Bladder pain can vary from being mild to severe. But, no matter what the degree of pain is, it requires serious medical attention. It is highly recommended that if you are suffering from bladder pain you must consult and seek a doctor's advice right from the beginning. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Try this-- Don't drink water before meals. This can fill your stomach and make it harder to get in enough calories. Eat more often. Squeeze in an additional meal or snack whenever you can, such as before bed. Drink milk. Drinking whole milk to quench thirst is a simple way to get in more high-quality protein and calories. Try weight gainer shakes. If you’re really struggling then you can try weight gainer shakes. These are very high in protein, carbs and calories. Use bigger plates. Definitely use large plates if you’re trying to get in more calories, as smaller plates cause people to automatically eat less. Add cream to your coffee. This is a simple way to add in more calories. Get quality sleep. Sleeping properly is very important for muscle growth. Don't smoke. Smokers tend to weigh less than non-smokers, and quitting smoking often leads to weight gain.
