You need continuous sittings with a psychologist to go to the root cause of your" depression" first, get it diagnosed if you are suffering from depression or depression like symptoms. If depression is confirmed on psychological testing done by a psychologist you will require medicines from a psychiatrist, if only depression like symptoms are found on psychological testing, then you will require psychotherapy from a psychologist. Psychologist is an expert in psychological testing and psychotherapy while psychiatrist is an expert for mental illness treatment with medicines only. They have no training in psychotherapy.

Concentration is a mental skill that you can develop. There are two ways to improve your concentration: first, raise your brain's natural ability to concentrate. In other words, increase your attention. Second, adjust the environment around you to make concentrating easier. To improve your concentration takes a little time and effort, but it can be worth it. In my personal experience with students. This can make noticeable improvement in a relatively short time. Ideas for daily concentration-boosting habits include: mindfulness meditation - many studies confirm that 20 minutes of meditation or more per day improves concentration and attention span. Focusing on your breathing, known as mindfulness meditation, is one of the simplest way of meditation. Start with ten minutes in the morning and ten minutes before bed. Proper sleep -i am sorry to say it. Pulling all nighter will not help with your grade. Unless you are getting sufficient restful sleep, you are not going to be as mentally focused as you could be. Brain game -. The more you use certain skills, the more they are reinforced in the brain. So it makes sense that playing concentration games and games that require you to focus will improve your concentration ability. You need to be consistent in this. Play for about 10 to 20 minutes each day. Have fun, and get the benefits but remember not to spend more than 20 minutes a day. Your goal is to improve your concentration and not the score in the game! eat healthier - your brain needs the proper nutrients to allow you to focus. Eat more vegetables and fruits and avoid consumption of junk food as much as possible. Lot of research has now proven that sugar is very harmful for our health. Reduce sugar and refined white floor in your diet as much as you could. Exercise is helpful in both reducing stress and increasing focus. At-least 20 minutes a day would go a long way. Optimize your mental state & environment in addition to building the habits described above into your daily routine, also adjust your environment and your current mental state to improve your concentration when studying. Create a study spot. Your brain loves routine. Create a place where all you do is study. An obvious choice is a secluded desk of some kind, but the trick is to make sure you only study in that spot. Studying in bed is a bad habit, for example, because your body is trained to want to sleep once you get into bed. Remove distractions. Turn off the ringer on your phone and take other steps to prevent interruptions. Don't study with the television on or with talk radio playing. Some studies have shown that soft instrumental music (no vocals) can help improve your concentration. Block background noises. If you have to study or work in an environment where it is too loud (classroom or open space) or too quiet (such as at home or at a library) you can get easily distracted by outside influences. With the right amount of background noise you can actually block out distractions and enhance your creative thinking. Use time boxes. Set a time limit when you need to study new material. For example, let's say you want to read one chapter in a book (and remember it). Decide in advance that you can have 45 minutes to read the chapter, and 15 minutes to review it. Set a timer to keep yourself honest, then pace yourself to keep within the allotted time. Stay motivated with rewards. If you see studying as burden, it's hard to concentrate. One way to stay motivated is to set up a reward system. Tell yourself you have to earn that hour of watching your favorite show later in the evening by first completing one hour of intense studying. That way, even if the material is dry, you have the reward to look forward to. Take a break every two hours. You mental energy will begin to decline after a long period of study. So every two hours or so, take a ten minute break. Walk around, eat a light snack, or just stare at the wall to relax your mind. Concentrating is the first step to learning anything new. It only makes sense that if you improve your concentration, your memory will improve also. Wishing you very best,

Hi, Thanks for writing in, welcome to the forum. You are obviously having problems adjusting to the troubled circumstances in your family/ life. There are certain symptoms of depression that you are reporting, but it is not clear if you have a depressive disorder or what is known as an adjustment disorder. This is important because antidepressant medicines have no role in adjustment disorder whereas they may have a role in a depressive disorder. Therefore, it is important to have a proper evaluation by a psychiatrist. It is tempting to have a quick, short cut kind of a solution and is only human and natural. But in the interest of your career and long term perspective, an evaluation by a mental health professional is certainly warranted and advisable. Do not neglect food and drink. Practise some form of exercise for atleast 20-30 minutes 4-5 days a week. These will serve as first aid measures. Take care!

Hye. Your weakness problem is because you are not eating enough. You need to eat small frequent meals when the body needs to ensure energy levels. Long gaps in between meals are making your blood sugar levels drop causing you to feel dizzy and hungry. So eat smaller but more frequent meals. Never travel empty stomach or stay hungry for too long after a long travel or heavy activity.

Hello I am sorry for your breakup. The problems you have reported are commonly seen after a breakup especially after a long term relationship. But f these are interfering with your work, you should consult a psychologist/psychiatrist. Usually these symptoms improve with counselling. In most of the cases, medicines are not required. Regards.

Here's How to Remove Negative Beliefs and Mental Blocks

Specialist in Psychology
Psychologist, Mumbai
Here's How to Remove Negative Beliefs and Mental Blocks
How to Remove Negative Beliefs and Mental Blocks

Think you’re smart, rational or open-minded? You are, if you submit to suspending your beliefs and challenging them from time to time, at least privately, through an internal dialogue. This article will give you the tools you need to eliminate any negative beliefs or mental blocks. Learning how to shift to a more useful belief or learning how to eliminate a self-defeating belief is a prerequisite for any kind of progress or achievement.

Don’t you get annoyed with the person who says to you, “I know it’s a problem, but that’s how I am!” Or do you feel compelled to accept that answer with sympathy? Are YOU someone who conveniently uses that line? By the way, it’s also a line commonly used by eve-teasers, rapists, serial offenders... you get the point! It’s basically saying, “I am not going to change”. Something that “feels natural”, is neither justified, nor is it a permanent part of YOU (i.e., your identity). It’s just like the “natural” feeling you get about wanting to kill your boss or an irritating colleague sometimes...but you don’t actually stab them, do you? (Coward!)

Therefore, the question is: Would you rather “feel natural” or would you rather be happier and more productive? EVERY belief is literally constructed by an individual. We’re born with a tabula rasa – a blank mental slate. Mathematically, if everything is constructed, then everything can similarly be deconstructed as well. Changing beliefs requires two things – volition (your decision to change) and an effective analytical method. The former will reduce the number of people who read further by 80%, and the latter will transform about 10-20% of the remaining ones. (So needless to say, believing a limiting belief to be permanent is the most destructive belief of them all! )

Okay, here we go... the effective analytical method in four steps:

1) Pick the belief that’s limiting your progress; the one you want to change. For example, “I can’t communicate or speak fluently.”

2) Eliminate this belief by analysis. Ask yourself:
a. From whom did I pick up this belief? Is that person an authority on the subject?
For example, “I don’t know...I’ve been saying that to myself for a while,” or “A parent or teacher or Mr. X told me I can’t”. Yeah, they told Albert Einstein that he was too dumb to learn too! Even if that person is an expert on the subject, haven’t experts been proven wrong on so many occasions?
b. What examples did I focus on (or failed to focus on) when establishing this stupid belief?
For example, “I was too nervous in school and messed up one-time...and then it just became a habit because I believed the first failure to be a permanent part of my communication skills.” “I failed to focus on the times I did okay.”
c. How has this belief affected my well-being? And what is it going to cost me in future?
Note down all the negative consequences of retaining this belief. For example, “I haven’t made a lot of friends, I’m unable to crack a job interview, get very nervous talking to people, and my career is going to remain ordinary. Consequently, I’m going to suffer in my relationships and financial life as well.”
d. How is this belief ridiculous or dumb?
For example, “It’s dumb because everyone without a medical problem can speak well. I speak well with my closest friend or family member. Why can’t I do the same with others? I just haven’t made enough effort.”

3) Add a new belief. Find all possible new ways:
a. Past event. Can you remember a time when you demonstrated the OPPOSITE?
For example, “Yes, I spoke pretty well when I was __ years old”, “Yes, once, when I was talking to XYZ last year”.
b. Is there an area of your life you already do/are this?
For example, “Sometimes...with my father”, or even “yes, with myself!”
c. Can you model someone else to do/be this? (Whether that person is in your network, on TV, or even modelling an imaginary belief... it doesn’t matter!)
For example, “I love how that news anchor speaks. I notice he talks louder and opens his mouth clearly while speaking... maybe I’ll try that.”
d. Educate yourself. What can you learn?
For example, “I can go on Youtube and watch videos on good communication techniques”, “I’ll start talking to my close friend in English (for someone who’s not fluent with English) and ask her to teach/correct me repeatedly,” or “I’ll buy that book on Flipkart”.

4) Pick the most useful ways from Step 3 to strengthen this new belief. Keep practising this new behaviour and keep questioning the old belief.
For example, when you say to yourself, “Oh I can’t speak well”, STOP! And remember that you’ve done this exercise above. Then remind yourself Step 2 (i.e., the consequences of continuing this belief, and why it’s dumb). Finally, strengthen the NEW belief with Step 3. R.E.P.E.A.T every time you catch yourself thinking of the limiting belief.

From past few months am suffering from severe depression because of it I am not able to sleep and eat properly. I have committed suicide for so many times and I feel like dying every minute.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Your situation is very serious and requires medical intervention very soon. You do not mention any reasons for the depression or suicide but it definitely is an anger-related depression. You are a suicide attempter. However, at some time the attempt can so wrong that arresting or getting out of the attempt may not be possible and that could be the end. You need to immediately meet with a psychiatrist and get into medicines and also therapy. Please do not neglect the latter, as that is very essential in the combination for the successful recovery from this condition. The urgency is so much that you are a danger to yourself right now. Please keep in someone? s company continuously until adequate help and intervention is in place. Inform your parents and seek the medical intervention instantly. Life is indeed very precious, and you are young. There is so much to do in life and so many challenges to face that giving up is a huge waste of a gift opportunity given to you by god. Are you religious or spiritual? faith in god is extremely important to appreciate life, to preserve it, and to nurture it, always. I know that you would love for someone to take charge of your life but I don? t know if you have someone to do so right now. Even so, take personal responsibility, be active about your recovery and cooperate with everything you are told to do, at least by the professionals. Keep me posted or let me know if there is anything more you want from me. Eating well and sleeping cannot be neglected: that will make your condition worse, and will mitigate the depression because of a weak constitution.

Hi I am 40 years old male. I am having habit of chewing masala tobacco from last 15 years. Tried lot many times but never been able to quit the same. Now the urge has increased and intake has become more. Please help me in this regard.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
The urge to increase the consumption over time is what is called developing tolerance and dependence to the substance. This is why it is addicted and progressively damaging. Chewing tobacco is really harmful especially because it is known to cause oral cancer and oral submucous fibrosis (SMF). Since it is an oral habit there are many substitutes that can be used to replace the oral stimulation. Of course, since it is a stimulant you cannot get the same effect and that is worth the loss to give up this very addictive habit. A dense fibrous tissue is deposited in the submucosal layer of the soft palate and cheek, causing disabling symptoms like trismus. It contains betel nuts, tobacco, lime, catechu and permitted spices and flavors. The first four substances damage the sensitive mucosa, causing constant irritation and micro trauma to the mucosa. Chemicals present act as a toxin. The phenol in the betel nut, with its caustic burning effect, destroys the mucosa, causing oral ulcers. The betel nut also contains tannins, which act as astringents, precipitating protein and damaging the mucosa. Altogether, this substance is known to be physiologically addictive. You can use replacements like nicotine chewing gum (if you want the stimulant effect, especially in the beginning) or ordinary chewing gum, hard candy and any other orally satiating substance, especially when the urge is very strong. You would have got conditioned to the habit to different times of the day and different situations. You must particularly avoid those occasions and occupy yourself with something else attractive. You should get regular exercise, eat healthily, and get a good night’s rest every day. Visit a dentist and clean up your teeth and gums to wipe out all the reminders and damages of the habit. You may also get a thorough oral check up and treatment for any damages incurred. If you are unable to give it up on your own, you need to be admitted into a rehabilitation center nearby until you are completely out of it. They will have you deal with all other issues also. Even after you come out of the center, you must continue therapy and attend Smokers Anonymous meetings regularly.
