4 Causes Of Insomnia!

Sleep is the most essential part of our lives because it is the time when our body gets rejuvenated and recharged. However, due to numerous reasons, quite a few individuals fail to achieve proper sleep or any sleep at all. This condition in which a person is unable to sleep at night can be termed as insomnia.

Causes of insomnia
There can be varied reasons for different people that can cause insomnia.

  • Unhealthy lifestyle i.e. improper sleep cycle, improper food habits, untimely naps, substance abuse etc.
  • Medical conditions like sinus allergies, gastrointestinal problems, endocrine problems, arthritis, asthma, neurological condition like Parkinson’s disease, chronic back pain etc.
  • Psychological conditions like depression and anxiety
  • Certain medications aimed to cure other health problems

In case of the treatable medical reasons, insomnia is gone once the problem is treated. However, for people who have no idea as to why they suffer from insomnia, here are certain tips that can help in fighting it.

Lifestyle changes to cure insomnia
Starting with a significant lifestyle change can be a great way to change one’s sleep cycles and get a good night’s sleep.

  • Maintain a proper and healthy diet, with more fruits and vegetables and less carbs and fat.
  • Try to sleep and wake up at the same time everyday (despite the fact that you may not feel sleepy). This will train the body and regulate the body clock.
  • Avoid afternoon naps or any short naps during the day.
  • Exercise daily for at least 30 minutes.
  • Avoid caffeine as it has contains properties that keeps a person up for long hours.
  • Avoid intake of alcohol and nicotine. Although alcohol is associated with fun and partying, it is actually a depressant and causes improper sleep.
  • Avoid any meal right before bed time.

Tips that can help

  • Take a good, warm shower right before sleep.
  • Ask your partner to give you a nice massage before bedtime.
  • Restrict bed activities to sleep and sex only, nothing more.
  • Make a really comfortable and inviting sleep environment.
  • Try and get rid of all your worries before going to bed.
  • Reduce stress using a number of stress reduction therapies like meditation, deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation techniques, etc.

Apart from the lifestyle changes and the tips that will help you gain a better sleep, there is another therapy, which may be useful. It is called the cognitive behavioural therapy. This therapy can give essential knowledge about sleep and help achieve normal sleep routines. Consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Hi lybrate-user, These all-natural sleep aids will have you drifting off in no time, no Rx necessary. 1. Consider Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia or CBT-I is considered the gold standard for insomnia treatment, the method with the most scientific evidence to support it. Typically, CBT-I involves meeting regularly with a therapist for various sleep assessments, according to the National Sleep Foundation, and you may be asked to keep a sleep journal and change a number of your sleep habits. 2. Take A Warm Bath: You can skip the candles and rose petals, but a soothing soak really can help you get to sleep. That's because relaxing in the tub will raise your body temperature slightly, and when you get out, the rapid cooldown will mimic the natural temperature drop the brain triggers as it prepares for sleep. A small 1985 study found that people who take a warm bath before bed not only fall asleep more quickly, but also report better quality of sleep. 3. Meditate: f you'd rather quiet your mind but leave your muscles out of it, a simple mindfulness meditation may also do the trick. A 2009 study found that meditation can help fight insomnia. The researchers found that meditators slept longer and better thanks to the deep relaxation powers of the practice. Try this 10-step meditation for better sleep tonight. If that's not quite your style, even just some deep breathing can help clear your mind and better prepare you for sleep. 4. Break a sweat: Regular exercisers may not realize it, but they're onto something. The physically active report getting better sleep than people who don't work out, according to the 2013 National Sleep Foundation's Sleep In America poll. It seems that the particular timing or form of exercise isn't as important as whether or not you simply move, says Grandner: "The evidence is out there that people who are even getting mild exercise are sleeping better than those who aren't. If that doesn't convince you to exercise even just a little, we don't know what will. 5. Do yoga: As a form of mind-quieting physical activity, yoga may just be the best of two worlds. And while there aren't exactly scientific studies showing a regular yoga practice can help you get more or better sleep, we do know that yoga does wonders for relaxation. "If your sleep problem is that you're unable to relax, [yoga] could be a way to intervene. 6. Aromatherapy: Whether it's an essential oil, a bath scrub, a sachet in an eye mask or even a pillow or mattress, lavender is the scent you're searching for if you want more and better sleep. In a small 2005 study, a whiff of lavender before bed resulted in more deep sleep. And a 2008 study found that smelling lavender helped a small group of women with insomnia fall asleep more easily. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

What is the meaning of sclerosis along the anterior aspect of si joints? Is it hardening of the bones or tissues surrounding si joints? Please help me. I am worried a lot.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
What is the meaning of sclerosis along the anterior aspect of si joints?
Is it hardening of the bones or tissues surr...
Any condition that alters the normal walking pattern places increased stress on the si joints. This could include a leg length discrepancy (one leg longer than the other), or pain in the hip, knee, ankle, or foot. Patients with severe pain in the lower extremity often develop problems with either the lower back (lumbar spine) or si joints. Usually, if the underlying problem is treated, the associated lumbar spine or si joint dysfunction will also improve. There are many disorders that affect the joints of the body that can also cause inflammation in the si joints. These include gout, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. These are all various forms of arthritis that can affect all joints. Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory arthritis that always affects the si joints. It can lead to stiffness and severe pain in the si joints, due to inflammation in the sacroiliac joints (sacroiliitis). As the disease process continues, the si joints can fuse together and have no range of motion. Once this occurs, there is no further pain associated with the si joints. Rarely, bacterial infection can involve the sacroiliac joints you need a check up.
