Iron Deficiency In Children - Symptoms And Prevention

Iron is an essential nutrient and mineral that is required by adults and children alike. Iron helps move oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body and helps muscles store and use oxygen. It is especially important for children because it aids development and prevents anaemia. Untreated iron deficiency in children can cause physical and mental delays. It can lead to less healthy red blood cells in the child's blood stream which will cause a delay in the growth of physical and mental faculties.

Risk factors for iron deficiency in children

Infants and children at highest risk of iron deficiency include:

  1. Babies who are born prematurely or have a low birth weight
  2. Babies who drink cow's milk before age 1
  3. Breast-fed babies who aren't given complementary foods containing iron after age 6 months
  4. Babies who drink formula that isn't fortified with iron
  5. Children ages 1 to 5 who drink more than 24 ounces (710 milliliters) of cow's milk, goat's milk or soy milk a day
  6. Children suffering from, Malabsorption, Chronic diarrhoea, thyroid disorders and Celiac Disease
  7. Children ages 1 to 5 who have been exposed to lead
  8. Adolescent girls also are at higher risk of iron deficiency because their bodies lose iron during menstruation.

Symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia

The signs and symptoms of iron deficiency anaemia in children may include:

  1. Pale skin
  2. Fatigue or weakness
  3. Slow cognitive and social development
  4. Difficulty maintaining body temperature
  5. Increased likelihood of infections
  6. Unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances, such as ice, dirt or pure starch

Prevent iron deficiency in children

Take steps to prevent iron deficiency in your child by paying attention to his or her diet. For example:

  1. Encourage a balanced diet. When you begin serving your baby solids, typically between ages 4 months and 6 months, feed him or her foods with added iron, such as iron-fortified baby cereal. For older children, good sources of iron include red meat, chicken, fish, beans and dark green leafy vegetables. Between ages 1 and 5, don't allow your child to drink more than 24 ounces (710 milliliters) of milk a day.
  2. Enhance absorption. Vitamin C helps promote the absorption of dietary iron. You can help your child absorb iron by offering foods rich in vitamin C, such as melon, strawberries, kiwi, broccoli, tomatoes and potatoes.
  3. Deworming: The power to kill parasites. With such tablets, we can eliminate worms in children and stop parasites from absorbing the critical nutrients a child needs to develop.
  4. Consider iron supplements. If your baby was born prematurely or with a low birth weight or you're breast-feeding a baby older than 4 months and he or she isn't eating two or more servings a day of iron-rich foods, talk to your child's doctor about oral iron supplements.

Don't take pallor lightly. Consult the doctor.

I have done BHCG test the result came 1.77 mIu/ml. And it was also noted that sample highly lipemic what does it mean? Will it affects my HCG result?

Test is negative. Either it is too early & conception has not occured because it is 20 mlu/ml just after conception on around 14 days or a few days later, levels rapidly keep rising with time as pregnancy progresses till urine starts excreting hcg hormones to be detected on a strip after 2 days of due date. Anyway better collect a container from the lab, if it is to be tested at home. Do share the good news with us.

It helps to increase the circulation of blood to all areas of the body and helps to strengthen the pelvic, abdominal muscles, hip and leg muscles. This exercise also helps to overcome lethargy.

Keep cholesterol below 150. Take plenty of vegetable and. Fruits. Exercises. Avoid junk foods. Ghee dalda and vanaspathi is not good. Red meat and trans fatty acids very bad. Less salt and sugar. Olive oil for cooking.

Dear Lybrate User, *Normally your irregular eating habits is the cause for stomach problems don't eat fried spicy and junk food eat good nutrious diet fresh vegetables and fruit smaller amounts at fixed intervals don't keep your stomach empty for more than 3to4hrs and add lots of Fiber and water in your daily intake. *During the condition of lack of hydrochloric acid in our stomach black pepper can be very effective to cure the problem. Black pepper can increase the flow of gastric juices and thus help in digestion. Powdered black pepper with crushed jaggery can be taken along buttermilk during indigestion. Or a fine powder of black pepper, dried mint leaves, ginger powder and coriander seeds, all taken in equal amounts, can be consumed twice a day (one teaspoon) to treat gas and indigestion.

Hello Doctor, I do not able to urine fully in a day even drinking 3 liter of water daily, I go to urologist when CT scan is normal, he prescribed me Tablet Alfoo (alfuzosin), this medicine able to urine fully but I do not able to tolerate its side effects like Low blood pressure, ringing in ear, fainting, numbness etc. So any Ayurvedic medicine is available which function same like this tablet so that I can urine fully. Thank you.

Dear friend in summer season urine output is less so don't worry your wt is 95 kg please reduce it by daily exercise, pranayam yoga and diet control whenever you have doubts about urine, pl check your sr creatinine and blood urea also take cap punarnava by himalaya 1 1 for urine and cap garcini 60 1 1 before food cap decrin plus 60 1 1 after food take salads and fruits more before lunch avoid heavy and fatty dinners avoid oily spicy and fast food.

Upto how many days can bp be lowered before dialysis. And ya they r providing/giving blood to patient to. What does that mean.

I had a cut in my leg 7days ago as I fell from my bike, I didn't take tetanus vaccine as I took it in the month of january 2015 but recently I started feeling stiffness and contraction in the nearby area of which remains for some time and then goes, but it happens every time the move I stand and walk for first few seconds. Please suggest as I have studied that this is a symptom of tetanus.

My wife is 30 years old and she has AVN in her right hip. 3years back we meet Dr. he had informed us that its deteriorated to Arthritis and we should do the hip replacement surgery when the pain will get unbearable. My wife is against the surgery. Off late the pain has increased and she has started to limp more. Are there any medicine which she can take to over come this pain? Is there any way around without the surgery?

If her hip is bad its best to get surgery for long term. More you delay it more difficult surgery can get. Also with whatever medicines you take you will never get relief as much as surgery. She will be in continuous pain and it will affect her life. Better to get one time job and finish it.
