Hi Doctor, My son aged 1.5 years is suffering from rickets which I come to know yesterday so please suggest me the best treatment and time required to cure it completely. Also suggest if any kind of lab test can be done to monitor the progress.

MBBS, MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Jodhpur
Rickets is disease caused by bony changes in patients due to deficiency of Vitamin D which further leads to altered calcium and phosphorus metabolism. So it can be monitored by bony changes, vitamin D levels, bony enzymes like serum alkaline phosphatase, parathyroid hormone levels, x-rays, bone densitometry. Rickets is most commonly caused by vitamin D deficiency but it may be also due to other non vitamin D deficiency causes. Vitamin D deficiency may be due to poor intake ,poor absorption or excessive losses or poor activation of vitamin d to its active form by liver and kidney. The treatment will depend on cause.
