Magic of Coconut Water

Magic of Coconut Water

Go nuts over coconuts: 7 super cool benefits of nariyal paani

Coconut water or nariyal paani as we know it is a staple in many homes during summer. Starting the day with a glass of coconut water has more benefits than you can imagine. We in india have been fortunate to have abundant access to coconut water that is healthier for your body than any sports drink, cola drink, sugary premix or fruit juice.

Nutritional facts

From a nutritional point of view, water from a green tender coconut is packed with vitamins, electrolytes, minerals, amino acids, enzymes, phyto-hormones and cytokines. It has more potassium than in four bananas; is fat free with hardly any calories, and very easy to digest.

Health benefits

Here are some benefits of drinking coconut water regularly.

1. Coconut water is a diuretic

When consumed regularly, it keeps your renal system (kidneys, bladder, ureters and urethra) healthy, prevents the occurrence of kidney stones, flushes out toxins like uric acid, phosphates, from the body via urine, and prevents urinary problems.

2. Coconut water helps reduce weight

300 ml of coconut water has just 60 calories, compared to 139 calories in a cola drink, 142 in fruit juice and a whopping 200 in a sports drink. It provides nutrition, keeps you feeling full and suppresses the appetite. Having coconut water with breakfast or lunch keeps you from snacking between meals or reaching for high calorie meals and keeps water retention in check.

3. Coconut water slows down the ageing process

Coconut water hydrates the cells and helps delay ageing at a cellular level, combats the effects of pollution, stress and irregular food habits. All this is due to the presence of cytokines, which are a group of proteins that improve the quality of cells and regulate immunity.

4. Coconut water rehydrates and restores

Loss of vital nutrients through sweat is one of the main reasons we feel sapped of energy, listless and lethargic during summer months. Coconut water replenishes the body of vital nutrients, gives energy and gets absorbed by the body instantaneously. For severe cases of dehydration, add a pinch of salt to coconut water for results that are the same as any ors.

5. Coconut water helps maintain blood pressure

Coconut water which is packed with potassium, magnesium & vitamin c is a natural way to main blood pressure. Potassium counteracts the effects of sodium (found in salt) which is known to increase the blood pressure. It also maintains a healthy heart by lowering bad cholesterol, reduces plaque formation in the arteries, increases circulation, & maintains good cholesterol in the body.

6. Coconut water is good for the skin

Topical application of coconut water prevents acne, reduces blemishes, tightens pores, lightens scars, reduces wrinkles and slows down the ageing of skin. Coconut water hydrates the skin and hair both from inside and outside.

7. Coconut water is an anti-bacterial

Coconut water naturally prevents infections, boosts immunity, and maintains the healthy flora and fauna of the digestive system. The natural sugars in coconut water destroy microbes and disease causing pathogens making it a delicious and preventative addition to your diet.

Get rid of Constipation

Fight constipation in 9 simple ways

Constipation means having less than three bowel movements per week. Normal bowel habits vary from person to person. While some people go three times a day; others go 3-4 times in a week. Not having a bowel movement for a few days does not mean that you have constipation. Many people believe not having regular bowel movement causes the body to absorb poisonous substances in stools. This is not true.

Here are some easy ways to relieve and prevent constipation

Make your own multigrain aata from whole wheat, jau (barley), bajra (pearl millet), jowar (great millet), ragi (finger millet), makki (corn), singara (chestnut). All these are excellent sources of fiber, antioxidants, b vitamins and minerals.
Avoid using white flour (maida)
Drink at least 8 glasses of water (1-2 liters) daily
Avoid coffee and other caffeinated drinks
Have a glass of warm water every morning and before you go to bed
Include more fruits and vegetables into your diet
Exercise daily. Brisk walking or running for 20 minutes daily can help in regulating bowel habits
Never ignore the urge to have a bowel movement
Some home remedies to relive constipation are:
1. Soak a handful of kishmish (raisins) in water overnight. Have them first thing in the morning on an empty stomach
2. Boil a few figs in a 100-150ml of milk, drink the warm mixture at night before bed
3. Mix flaxseeds (alsi) in your cereal or have a handful with warm water early in the morning
4. Have about 100 ml of palak juice (spinach) mixed with an equal quantity of water twice daily
5. Mix 2-3 sunflower seeds, a few flaxseeds, sesame seeds and almonds. Ground them together to a fine powder. Have one tablespoon of this mixture every day, for a week or add it to your salad or cereal.

A mixture of equal quantities of amla and lemon juice works just as well.

Indian Herbs to Enhance Sexual Activity

Set the mood right: 6 Indian herbs to boost sexual health

Sexual health is an often neglected area in India, due to the topic of sex being a taboo. Some studies show that your sex-drive is a reflection of your overall well-being due to its link with the other hormones in the body. All the hormones in our body collectively affect our mood, consciousness, and mental health.

Ayurveda has known the importance of sexual health since ancient times and used various herbs to not only increase sex drive but for the overall nourishment of the reproductive system.

Here is a list of the prominent herbs that are excellent for sexual health:

1. Ashwagandha

Also known as Indian ginseng, this is an aphrodisiac for men and increases blood flow to the reproductive organs and relaxes the nerves thereby increasing sex drive. You can take 2 gm of the powder in the evening or tablets that are available according to the dosage.

2. Shilajit

This is one of the most valuable herbal remedies which is only found in the Himalayas. It is literally the fossilized remains of medicinal plants and is found in a resinous form. Shilajit can increase sperm count in men and ovogenesis in women. The recommended dosage is 300 to 500 mg per day.

3. Hibiscus flower

Hibiscus is used for hair growth and arthritis but its petals are also a good aphrodisiac. It also contains antioxidants that fight ageing and preserve youthfulness. Have hibiscus tea like the Egyptians used to by mixing powdered hibiscus petals with tea.

4. Ginger

Ginger stimulates blood circulation to the pelvic area and also boosts energy levels. Mix half teaspoon of grated or chopped ginger with honey and have it.

5. Shatavari

This one is more suitable for women though it has some effect on men also. It is a calming tonic that regulates the female hormones. You can boil the crushed roots on medium flame and drink the water or you can use the powdered form (3-6 gm) gradually moving towards a higher dose.

6. Kaunchbeej

Known is English as mucuna pruriens, is one of the rare natural sources of powerful hormonally active compounds that can affect mood and mind. It stimulates the production of growth hormones, energizes the muscles and raises sex-drive in both men and women.

Skin Care In Summer

Skin Care In Summer

Shine bright: 10 ways to ensure glowing skin this summer

Summers open the doors to shorts, ice creams, cool drinks, and swims. But while having all the fun, don't forget to take care of the largest organ of your body and that is your skin. Due to the strong and harsh rays of the sun during summers, we need to take special care of our skin which gets exposed to plenty of sun especially in a tropical country like India.

So, here are some essential skin care tips you must follow to ensure healthily and glowing skin this summer season:

1. Stay hydrated

Due to excessive water loss from the body through sweating, you need to drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. Drink at least 15-20 glasses of plain water each day.

2. Wear sunscreen

Choose a sunscreen with SPF 40 or above and apply it on your skin 20-30 minutes before your skin is exposed to the sun. This helps in protecting your skin against harmful UV rays which can potentially cause skin cancer.

3. Use a protective gear

You should invest in a good pair of sunglasses, a hat or an umbrella as these provide further protection for your skin from the strong and harmful rays of the sun.

4. Wear minimal makeup

Try and use minimal make-up that is mineral-based instead of cream-based. Wearing heavy make-up during summer causes sweating and may clog your pores.

5. Clean your face often

Clean your face twice a day with a face wash. In addition, you can clean your face with plain water up to five times a day in case your work requires you to stay outdoors for long hours.

6. Go for exfoliation

While face wash can clean the face up to an extent, it is important to also use an exfoliating scrub on your face at least 3 times a week since all the sweat, oil and dirt clogs pores. A natural home-made scrub of curd, besan and honey soothes and cleanses the skin and can be used on the entire body.

7. Use a toner

You can go for a natural one (e. G. A mix of aloe-vera juice and rose water) or buy one from the market. In summers, toning your skin is very important since natural skin oils are secreted that may clog pores and cause acne.

8. Avoid peak sunshine

Avoid going out between 11 am to 4 pm if possible since the rays of the sun are harshest during that time and can damage your skin.

9. Remove tan

In case, your skin gets tanned in the summer, use simple home-made packs made of sandalwood powder, lemon juice, cucumber juice, tomato juice to remove tan and also give you a glowing skin.

10. Eat fresh

Eat as much fresh fruits and vegetables as possible and avoid oily foods. Swap caffeine and alcohol for fresh lime juice and other fruit juices.

It involves creation of a smallstomach pouch which restricts your food intake and thus results in lesser calories consumption. It also involves bypassing a segment of the small intestine where food absorption takes place which leads to lesser absorption of calories thus contributing to the weight loss.

2. Sleeve gastrectomy

This procedure entails leaving a small portion of the stomach inside the body (the shape of a sleeve) and removs the major portion of the stomach out of the body. With the major portion of stomach being eliminated, the hunger stimulating hormone gherlin is also eliminated. This puts a tab on the portion sizes and one loses weight because of the less calories consumed.

3. Gastric banding

It involves placing a silicone band on top of the stomach portion which slows down the passage of food to the remaining stomach and gives an early feeling fullness.

All these bariatric procedures are done laparoscopically (a technique of surgery that does not involves large cuts but is done through small holes) and thus patients recover much faster and have excellent cosmetic results.

How much weight loss can be achieved with bariatric surgery?

After a bariatric surgery, the patient loses 6 to 8 kilograms monthly on an average (differs according to various procedures). The patient usually loses 70 % of his/ her excess body weight in case of a gastric bypass surgery. (this may vary for other surgeries)

What precautions do patients have to take after the surgery?

Bariatric surgical procedures require lifelong commitment and determination from the patient to ensure the procedure is a success and he/she does not develop any complications/deficiencies.

Vitamins for Life

Why are vitamins so important for your health?

Vitamins are essential nutrients for our various bodily functions. They don't provide energy like carbohydrates and fat but play an important role in various functions like immunity, digestion and metabolism. They strengthen the bones, help in wound healing, improves our eyesight and helps in overall growth.

There are 13 essential vitamins which are broadly divided into two categories: fat soluble and water soluble.

The fat soluble vitamins are vitamin a, d, e and k and they can be stored in our body for up to 6 months. The water soluble vitamins are b and c, they cannot be stored in our body, so we need to replenish them regularly.

Here is what you should know about these vitamins:

Vitamin a (beta carotene)

Function: It is an important antioxidant, enhances our immune system and is extremely essential for our eyesight. It's deficiency can lead to night blindness. It contains beta carotene, which helps in repair of the cornea and eye membranes.

Sources: carrots, pepper, sweet potato, broccoli, spinach.

Vitamin b1 (thiamine)

Function: it helps in production of certain neurotransmitters and multiple enzyme processes. A deficiency of vitamin b1 can lead to beriberi, nerve degeneration, loss of appetite.

Sources: foods rich in vitamin b1 are peas, sunflower seeds, cauliflower, potatoes, oranges.

Vitamin b6 (pyridoxine)

Function: this is a vitamin which helps in improving the metabolism, burning more calories, strengthening the immunity, and supporting the function of nervous system. It's deficiency may cause anemia and peripheral neuropathy. Humans cannot produce vitamin b6 so it should be obtained from the diet.

Sources: foods rich in vitamin b6 are fish, chicken, spinach, chickpeas, bananas, whole grain, nuts.

Vitamin b9 (folic acid)

Function: it helps in growth and development of baby in the mother's womb and is important for heart health. The deficiency of folic acid in pregnancy leads to neural tube defects.

Sources: foods rich in vitamin b9 are green leafy vegetables like spinach, asparagus, fortified cereals, legumes.

Vitamin b12 (cobalamin)

Function: it strengthens our nervous system and is an important part of dna synthesis and maturation. It helps in converting homocysteine to methionine which plays an essential role in protecting the heart. Deficiency of vitamin b12 can lead to megaloblastic anemia, and some neurological problems.

Sources: foods rich in vitamin b12 are animal products like liver, meat, poultry.

Vitamin c (ascorbic acid)

Function: it has got tremendous antioxidant properties. It is crucial for our body's immune system, wound healing, development of connective tissue like collagen, cardiovascular health and prevention of many diseases.

Sources: foods rich in vitamin c are oranges, peppers, lemons, broccoli, amla, strawberries, brussel sprouts.

Vitamin d

Function: it is a vitamin which helps in formation and maintenance of healthy bones and teeth and also for normal growth and development. In addition, it also helps in proper immune function and muscle development. Lack of exposure to sunlight, reduces the ability to synthesize vitamin d in the skin and can lead to deficiency of the same. It's deficiency has been associated with weak bones, pain and muscle weakness.

Sources: sunlight is the best source of vitamin d. When the sun shines on your bare skin, your body makes its own vitamin d. Other sources are egg yolk, mushrooms, salmon, tuna, fish oils, fortified cereals and fortified milk.

Vitamin e

Function: it is a very powerful antioxidant, promotes cardiovascular health and helps in skin repair. Its deficiency is linked to muscle weakness, nerve damage and problems with vision.

Brown Rice Good for Health

7 reasons why you should start having brown rice

Rice is a staple in our country and during mealtime the volume of rice consumed is almost always more than proteins, vegetables or fruits! the rice you regularly eat is white rice, which is actually milled rice and during the process has its hull, bran and germ removed. This process steals many beneficial ingredients from the rice such as important vitamins and essential fatty acids. So, you are left with just a platter of starch which doesn't really provide the body with all necessary benefits it is supposed to.

However a solution does exist and the answer lies in brown rice. The secret of brown rice is its unique manufacturing procedure which renders almost no damage to the nutritional value of rice.

Nutritional facts

-during the milling process, the fiber in brown rice is kept intact thereby making it more rich in fiber than the white rice.

-brown rice only has its hull removed which means that all its essential nutrients like magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, thiamine, niacin, vitamin b6 and manganese are kept intact.

Health benefits

Here are some amazing health benefits of brown rice:

1. Promotes heart health

Brown rice contains phytonutrients called plant lignans which get converted to mammalian lignans in our body. They help to keep hormone-dependent cancers at bay and also protect against heart diseases. Brown rice with sautéed vegetables can make your quick lunch all the more heart-healthy.

2. Aids in digestion

During the milling process, the fiber in brown rice is kept intact thereby making it more rich in fiber than the white rice. This helps in regulating bowel movements and keeping your digestive tract in optimal health.

3. Regulates blood sugar

Brown rice is also known to keep blood sugar levels under control. It is a rich source of magnesium which helps a lot of enzymes critical to the body glucose consumption and insulin secretion

4. Helps in weight loss

Brown rice helps the body to feel full with smaller portions and tends to assist in weight loss. So if you are keen to lose a few kilos, brown rice is your ultimate choice.

5. Reduces asthma risk

Studies show that brown rice intake is instrumental in curing childhood asthma due to its inherent nutrients. Boiled or roasted brown rice with your child's favorite nuts and meat chunks can provide your child more benefits than one can probably imagine.

6. Fights inflammation

Brown rice is a good source of antioxidants. Our body needs antioxidants to fight free radicals and provide protection from inflammation. It also contains an important antioxidant enzyme called superoxide dismutase. This antioxidant protects the body from oxidation damage during energy production.

7. Prevents cancer

Brown rice can also reduce chances of various cancers including colon cancer, breast cancer and leukemia. This is majorly attributed to the presence of antioxidants and high fiber content in the brown rice. The fiber in brown rice can actually bind itself to the harmful cancer causing toxins in the body thus preventing them from attaching to the colon walls. Brown rice bran contains phenols like tricin, ferulic acid, caffeic acid. You will find them in much lesser quantities in white rice. These phenolic components help to minimize the proliferation of colon and breast cancer cells.

Tips to Maintain Weight

Tips to Maintain Weight

Lost the excess weight? here are 7 ways to maintain it

Losing weight is undoubtedly a challenging task but maintaining the weight that you have shed is a different and a much bigger challenge. Achieving a sustained weight loss does not mean constant dieting, obsessive calorie counting, and unmet cravings; instead, it requires little changes in your everyday life which add up to make a big difference.

So, here are some easy-to-follow ways that will help you maintain your weight and help you make the right diet and lifestyle choices:

1. Eat often

As ironical as this may sound, eating often helps in weight loss! splitting your meals into small and frequent ones makes a huge difference. Have 3 main meals and 2 to 3 mid meals which need to be healthy snacks. This will prevent you from overeating and will keep your metabolism going strong. Some healthy mid-meal options could be fruits, salads, sprouts, nuts.

2. Do not confuse hunger with thirst

Try to differentiate whether you are hungry or just thirsty. Most people confuse the two and end up overeating. Set yourself a goal of drinking up to 2 liters of water by the evening. Have a glass of water before meals as it also prevents binge eating.

3. Ditch all sweetened beverages

Colas are very high on sugar which makes them extremely calorie dense. They will not make you feel full at all so they are basically unnecessary calories that do no good. Moreover, they are high on caffeine which is also not too good for your metabolism. Replace these with homemade refreshing drinks like buttermilk, seasonal fresh fruit juices, fruit smoothies and lemonade.

4. Cook right

Get innovative with your cooking. Try your hand at baking or grilling instead of the age old deep frying. Make your own healthy sauces and salad dressings. There are enormous options available if you hunt for the recipes!

5. Practice portion control

Make it a habit to practice portion control. Use smaller size plates, smaller spoons, and smaller bowls which will psychologically make you feel fuller in lesser quantity and you will not end up overeating.

6. Start using a fitness app

For once, put your smartphones to some smart use. There are a lot of fitness applications available that keep a track of your calories, count your steps, and keep a record of your water intake and more. Set targets for yourself, for example, set it to 10, 000 steps in a day and let the app remind you in the middle of the day that you haven't walked enough- this will really give you a big push towards being physically active!

7. Pick your grocery mindfully

With countless options at the grocery shops, it is easy to get carried away with the wrong choices that are unhealthy and calorie dense. Plan your meals for the week and shop ahead of time. Choose the least processed foods and focus more on picking fresh fruits, vegetables, protein-rich eggs or cottage cheese, dairy, meat. Always read the labels for their caloric value before picking up any packaged products.
