Tips To Prevent UTI During Pregnancy

Tips To Prevent UTI During Pregnancy

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is usually caused by inflammation or bacteria in the urinary tract. Pregnant mothers are most susceptible to this infection, especially after the sixth week and before the twenty fourth week of pregnancy. This usually happens due to the alterations that take place in the urinary tract during pregnancy.

Also, a growing uterus can block the urine drainage from this part of the body, leading to the accumulation of bacteria which causes infection. The symptoms are uncomfortable and even painful. These include pain and burning sensation, frequent urination, fever and chills. So how can you prevent UTI during pregnancy? we have a few tips for you!

  • Hydration: The best thing you can do to both prevent and treat a urinary tract infection is to start drinking at least six to eight glasses of water in a day. Another good way to prevent and treat UTIs is with the help of cranberry juice which has powerful antioxidants that flush toxins out of your system effectively. You will, however, need to ensure that the cranberry juice is fresh and natural, without any sweeteners.
  • Hygiene: Keeping yourself clean is one of the most important ways in which you can avoid UTI. It is best to clean from front to back, rather than the other way, so that you drive away bacteria and dirt. Also, make sure that you wash your private parts with warm water infused with a few drops of normal liquid antibacterial, so that you can be sure that the bacteria do not get a chance to thrive and affect your system. Also, remember to use soaps, washes and creams that have a mild formula, rather than a harsh chemical concoction. Hygiene for this area of the body includes keeping it dry.
  • Diet: Your diet should have plenty of fluids and lemons or other citrus food that are rich in vitamin c, as this is a good vitamin to keep bacteria at bay. Also, you should eliminate sweet and refined products to ensure that you do not contract UTI. Other foods to avoid include caffeine and alcohol.
  • Clothing: Wear airy and cotton based undergarments that are breathable and have a soft texture. This non abrasive type clothing can also help in keeping the area dry, so that bacteria does not get a chance to develop, as they typically need a damp environment for growth. Change your undergarments twice a day, if need be, and avoid wearing trousers and shorts that are too tight.

These tips and many others including urinating as soon as the urge sets in, can help in fighting the risk of contracting UTI during pregnancy.

I have delivered baby girl on 3rd October premature at 32 week 2 days weight 1.5 kg. The baby had sepsis and suddenly her kidney parameters are as below Protein urine random: 70.59 mg/dl creatinine Urine: 5.71 mg/dl Protein creatinine ration: 12362 mg/g Please suggest what are the long term impact on her kidneys. Her KFT test is within normal range.

MBBS, Basic Life Support (B.L.S), Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Fellow of Academy of General Education (FAGE)
General Physician, Bangalore
I would first like to reassure you that there will be no long term side effects on the kidney. sepsis can cause shock like effects on the kidney thus elevating kidney parameters. but this is temporary. . however, baby kidneys are strong and regenerate better than adult kidneys. as the child grows, the kidneys will repair themselves.

hi, I can empathize and understand your situation . The problem is surely due to the side effects of the drug. You plz ask your psychiatrist to prescribe some medicine to reduce this problem. As far as the damage to the kidney problem I would suggest you to get the renal function test (RFT) done. It will show you the correct status of your kidneys. Along with this I would advise you to drink a lot of water in day time and reduce the quantity of water intake after 6:00 pm so that your sleep won't get disturbed. Also go for a brisk walk daily for at least half an hour. Regards Sunita

Hello, In this case having plant based protein is safe. Like soya, lugumes, pulses, quinoa. Avoid animal based protein including milk and it's products.Avoid eating more amounts of raw vegetables like spinach, tomato. Cooked or steamed are better option. Banana flower and banana tuber are very good to clear kidney stones. Hope this helps you. stay healthy and stay fit☺

Dear,if you have persistent or recurrent infection there has to a cause like inadequate dosage, inadequate duration of drug therapy, drugs taken wrong way or wrong combination of drugs. Secondly you may stone, obstruction, tumour or inborn defect which need to be detected and treated, urine test is first then urine culture and then sonography. My father is 59 years old. Since a week he is saying that he has to urinate frequently which includes burning sensation and not every time he is able to pas the urine. Sometimes few drops only. Could you please tell what is the problem here?

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS - Urology, MBBS
Urologist, Ahmedabad
Dear , your father is suffering from stranguria. As it is recent it is more than likely that he has developed a fissure which is due to passage of hard stools. So treat it first: take emollient laxative like cremaffin plus 1 tsf at night, isabgol powder 3-4 tsf in a glass of water at night. Apply any ointment like anovate or zincal before passing stools. If no improvement then let me know in weeks time. Dr. Kiran mehta.

MBBS

At 70 yrs 8.11 psa is nearly normal. Prostitis--uti or truama can cause this reading. Keep watch on psa level regularly. Surgeon by per rectal exam can tell it is normal. Or abnormal.

Please maintain hygiene. Use condoms while performing sex also look if your husband is having uti or not as its common that he can be affected--if so both of you need to be treated at the same time. Please apply olive oil/coconut oil oil on the affected area to ease itching.
