Bad breath can be reduced or prevented if you: practice good oral hygiene. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove food debris and plaque. Don't forget to brush the tongue, too. Replace your toothbrush every 2 to 3 months or after an illness. Use floss or an interdental cleaner to remove food particles and plaque between teeth once a day. See your dentist regularly -- at least twice a year. He or she will conduct an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning and will be able to detect and treat periodontal disease, dry mouth, or other problems that may be the cause of bad mouth odor. Drink lots of water. This will keep your mouth moist. Chewing gum (preferably sugarless) stimulates the production of saliva, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria.

The type of treatment you have for toothache will depend on the cause of the pain, so your dentist will examine your mouth and may carry out an X-ray to try to identify the problem. •If your toothache is caused by tooth decay, your dentist will remove the decayed area and replace it with a filling. •If your toothache is caused by a loose or broken filling, the filling will be taken out, any decay will be removed and a new filling put in place. •If the pulp inside your tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp and then inserting a special type of filling to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection. •If your toothache can't be treated using these methods, or if your tooth is impacted (wedged between another tooth and your jaw), it may need to be removed.

You may need deep cleaning along with surgical, gum strengthening procedure. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks.

I want to know a way to whiten teeths because most of the toothpastes failed to do that.

Hi, mostly teeth get stained because of tobacco, gutka, pan alcohol and smoking. And some medications like tetracycline. Extrinsic stains can be removed by professional cleaning and bleaching.

Dental pain n infections need definitive treatment n intervention by dentist. Medicines alone can't treat majority of dental infections. Visit your dentist at earliest n get your teeth evaluated to locate the cause of your problem n get treated accordingly. Avoid self medications. Many dental infections subside only after simultaneous intervention by dentist while your on medications.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Patients with an identifiable cause of bad breath e.g., periodontal (gum) disease, gingivitis, postnasal drip, systemic illness can be treated for these conditions.
Many cases of bad breath may be readily alleviated by:
Proper dental care and oral hygiene, including daily flossing.
Gentle cleaning of the posterior portion of the dorsum of tongue (e.g., with a plastic tongue cleaner).
Rinsing and deep gargling with an effective mouthwash (in order to get the liquid as far back as possible without swallowing it, one can extend the tongue while gargling). This is most effective when done at bedtime.
Eating fibrous foods (a healthy breakfast is recommended).
Chewing gum briefly (5 minutes is often sufficient) if the mouth is dry, or after meals, especially with high protein intake. Sugar-free gum is preferable.
Sufficient water intake.
Decreasing alcohol and coffee intake.

Hello Mr. lybrate-user. According to your age and time period of pain as you mentioned can be due to eruption of third molar. OPG should be done and you can wait for few months also. It's not harmful. For the time being you can use mouthwash, anti sensitivity toothpaste. Luke warm saline gargles 3-4 times a day.

Dear Lybrate User, You have partially answered your queries yourself. The post-operative healing after wisdom teeth extraction normally depends on the amount of wear and tear that had taken place during the extraction and also on the way you have taken care of the extraction wounds after the extraction, as advised by your dentist. Regular medication as prescribed by the dentist helps heal the wounds in less than 15 days if everything is good. There could be a possibility of decay with your second last molars that would become evident upon taking an X-Ray of those teeth. Visit your dentist for more comprehensive diagnosis and the ultimate relief of pain. You might not require RCTs and just a simple restoration (filling) will take care of the problem. Good Luck!

I have been suffering from pain a very big pain in my mouth with a small part and how can I decrease my mouth pain by using tablets.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
We need more investigations (full mouth x-ray) & clinical examination to decide upon treatment. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.
