A friend (in her early 30's)is going through a post trauma of her divorce. She has lost her interest in life. How to council her, please suggest?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Divorce is very painful and difficult. If there was any abuse, it will be even more hurtful. But the earlier she deals with that pain, the earlier will she get out of it. Please make her talk about the marriage until she purges herself of all the negativity. Let her use her own language to describe it, and let her talk extensively. When you are able to spare time, take her out and let her relate to others and the world around her. Gradually she will come out of it. If she broods over the divorce, withdraws, or is unwilling to talk, she could get into more problems. When listening to her, reserve your judgment, and just be a good listener. Occasionally, empathize with her and show a lot of understanding. The worse regret in a divorce is when the person realizes that there was something more that could have been done, but was left without adequate pursuit. This thinking usually follows later when it is too late. If that is the case, she will need to be consoled and know that both of them were responsible but that it is too late. Life has to go on and she has to move on. If she is working, it will be a lot easier, if she attends to her job. Tell her not to meet too many people who knew the couple well, and definitely she should not indulge in bringing out dirty linen. Help her understand the lessons to be learned and the role she played in this downfall. That is extremely important for her recovery.

Tips to Prevent Depression in Adults

Diploma in Psychological Medicine, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Tips to Prevent Depression in Adults

Depression in adults is a lot different from depression in younger people. Adults have the overburdening thrust to believe they should be able to deal with any situation, however, adverse of their own accord. This pushes them to such a point that they bottle up worries and anxieties making themselves vulnerable to depression. Reaching out for help is almost a wager; lost before a fair trial. An elderly person could remain depressed due to varied reasons, but the cause is seldom remorse. Assuming the cause as sadness, it could depress your loved ones even more.

Take a look at the following factors that can depress older adults:

1. Serious ailments like stroke, cancer, diabetes, thyroid and so on so forth.
2. The loss of a dear friend or a family member.
3. Excessive work pressure.
4. Stagnation in personal life, passions and goals.
5. Lack of motivation to do the slightest of things.

To prevent depression in adults the following ways should be kept in mind:

1. Interaction is the key principle: Adults might need to talk. Being a grown -up doesn't mean you don't need suggestions and advice of your friends and relatives. Try to interact with a person who you think is depressed.
2. Try to identify medical conditions and look for reliable treatment: Medical illnesses like cancer or diabetes can take a toll on your mental strength. It can discourage you from living life with full vigor and energy. Thus medical conditions should be treated with due care and a person suffering should be encouraged to take professional psychological consultation.
 3. Providing a person with space is mandatory: Adults hate being domineered or patronized. When they need space they should be allowed to be alone. It could help them deal with depression better. Staying alone doesn't always involve loneliness. People might need to clarify things to their own selves or might even need time to introspect.
4. Make a depressed person take care of a pet: The presence of a pet in the household can relieve its members of accumulating stress. An adult when made to take care of a pet has added responsibilities and will naturally have less scope to wallow in their own sorrow. A pet gives a person the love and affection he or she had been lacking all along.
5. Humor is a wonderful pill: Create opportunities to make a person laugh. Share jokes or make them watch funny shows.
6. Ensure the person gets enough sleep: A full night's sleep is extremely important. Insufficient relaxation can push you towards depression.

Is there are any health problem after quiting smoking or chewing tobacco without any medical treatment?

DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Not at all. Most people who quit smoking or chewing tobacco do so by going cold turkey. That is, they stop everything suddenly. Medical help is only required for the withdrawal symptoms, if they are severe or unmanageable.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. You already know pan parag is very bad for health. You should motivate your father to quit it. There are no short cuts. Either he has to use his will power or you have to compel him to undergo deaddiction therapy. Take care.

Just think of losing your family (a caring, good husband and loving children), think of losing your dignity in the society and among your family members, just for your illegitimate relationship. If you feel that it does'n matter much then there is no problem.

I am suffering in depression from 10 days nd I hope you help me regarding depression nd wht should done regarding this.
Depression for last 10 days only usually should have a precipitating factor for it. If you have such an identifiable stressor you may start working on it specifically. Have a relaxed and restful sleep at night. Do not exhaust yourself beyond your physical and mental limits. Plan everything before starting to work on it. If you still continue to feel depressed and sad and feel unable to recover from it do not hesitate to consult a psychiatrist. You may consult me online for any further queries and assistance.

Dear lybrate user, it is very difficult to assess or diagnose with just this much information. I suggest that you see a psychiatrist or homeopathy doctor to further assess your overall condition and give you medications accordingly. 1. Besides this, please start regular exercise so that you become mentally and physically healthier. 2. You can make healthier food choices by having more fruits and vegetables, fish, eggs, proteins for optimal performance of the body and mind. Reduce junk, fried, sugary, processed and refined foods because they are linked to quick aging of the body and mind due to chemical, free radicals etc. 3. Meeting up regularly with friends, having fun and light hearted conversation help both mind and body to relax which is important for all of us. Go for long walks, picnic, outdoor activities to relax and enjoy. 4. Have a hobby of your own where you can feel creative and satisfied by the outcomes. This is very essential for anyone who feels that their life is boring and unproductive. 5. Sleeping for 6-7hours every night will repair and heal any tiredness and cellular damage to the brain. You will feel refreshed and hopeful at the beginning of each day. Going out in the sun is good for optimal brain function.

I have lost my brother. Last year. Since the day he has left. Life has changed. I study. I forget things. I don't even remember a thing a rear 2 mins before. I can't concentrate. If I try I start feeling irritated. I just don't feel like speaking to people. Have frequent headaches. And I just try being alone almost all the time. People around me are not getting it. Its not my over thinking. Its something else. Its something which is consistent in my case since my childhood but got even worse after he left. I don't know how to take it now. I just feel like giving up on everything. These mood swings. I feel soo dumb. I just feel lost. Please tell me what to do.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Loosing someone dear and near causes grief. Grief leads to disappointment. Grief related disappointment manifests symptoms as in the case of depression. But disappointment symptoms are far shorter in duration than depression. These symptoms will vanish in some days or weeks. Don’t worry. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, hobbies etc could help you divert your attention. I suggest cognitive therapy. Take care.

Sir I am taking paroxetine from 6 months and now if I don't take I feel very unusual. Please help
Hi, stopping paroxetine abruptly frequently causes withdrawal symptoms like tingling all over body, restlessness, insomnia, palpitations, sweating, tremors, etc. To prevent this, first make sure that you don't need it anymore. Then taper off gradually and there are some drugs which can be taken to prevent these symptoms if required.
