Not Stretching Properly? It May Cause You Muscle Strain!

Not Stretching Properly? It May Cause You Muscle Strain!

Muscle strain or muscle pull is a condition, which is characterized by damage to the muscles or its adjoining tendons. Undue pressure can be exerted on the muscle when you are carrying out routine activities such as sudden lifting of heavy things or playing contact sports. The damage to the muscle is usually in the form of partial or complete tearing of the tendons and fibres attached to the muscles. The small blood vessels in the muscles can also be damaged by the tearing of the muscles, leading to local bleeding and bruising.

The symptoms of muscle pain are:

  1. You will experience pain even while resting
  2. There will be bruising, swelling and redness around the affected area
  3. You will experience weakness of the muscles and tendons
  4. The movement and mobility of the muscle will be impaired
  5. You will experience pain when you use the affected muscles

The causes of a muscle strain are:

  1. Playing contact sports can lead to injuries
  2. Lifting heavy things
  3. Exercising without a proper warm up routine
  4. Lifting extremely heavy weights during exercise without proper acclimatization
  5. Sleeping on one side only for a long period of time
  6. Not stretching properly
  7. Falling from a height

The treatments for muscle strains are:

  1. Pain medications: You can opt for pain relieving medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications to help combat the associated pain of a muscle strain.
  2. Rice: Rice stands for rest, ice, compression and elevation. This treatment is usually the first step after suffering a strain, before opting for medications. This treatment prevents further aggravation of the problem.
  3. Compress: You can alternate between hot and cold compress to reduce the swelling and pain.
  4. Stretches: Once the affected area has healed, it is important for you stretch the muscles to improve their mobility and strength. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Physiotherapist.

When pain management doesn't help, what are other alternatives for back pain due to bulged discs and arthritis?

When pain management doesn't help, what are other alternatives for back pain due to bulged discs and arthritis?
I suggest you follow the below for your condition: take mag phos 6x - thrice daily for next 2 weeks and update. Heat and ice packs. Heat and/or cold therapy helps relieve most types of low back pain by reducing inflammation. Often patients use ice, but some prefer heat. Both may be used alternately.

I am a 41 year male and having two major disorders. First is my constipation as due to uneven sheduled routine of my professional life I am working in shifts some time day some times night. And due to this I dont feel hungry also. Second issue is in 2007 I met with an accident and faced internal injuries in my right knee joint and my pcl was broken then in the year 2010 I had undergone surgery of high tibial osteotomy in mumbai as my tibial bone alignment got disturbed. Now still I dont feel my right knee as same as my left knee. Just wanted to know how to get my right knee equally intact like left knee joint.

Constipation is not diseases but prolongs use of laxative, faulty diet, lack of exercise, stress, is result of this. So before rush pillar to pillar for medicine it? s advisable to correct life style otherwise constipation is cause of many diseases non of patients free for laxative treatment a after they started with small does but its found that periodically doses n prescription increases. Is also noted that in this fast n competition life even patients does not bother for root cause treatment but rush for medicine, if one medicine not effected rush for others. According to naturopathy science in most of illness constipation is direct responsible pl note constipation condition produce toxins, which find there way in to blood stream and are carried to all part of body, so it? s necessary to clear bowel every day by natural way treatment: the purgative and laxative give you only n only temporary relief exercise / walking minimum 3 km. Well balance natural n simple diet & sleep use unrefined oil, lentils, fresh beans, vegetable, tomatoes, cabbage, cauliflower, sprout, pumpkin, peas, beet, carrot, fresh fruit, especially grapes, papayas, mangoes, gooseberries, guavas, orange. And dry fruit such as figs, raisins, apricots and dates, cow or soya milk take plain isabgol in early morning, no clod drink or water, avoid white n bakery products are some of way to rid on constipation. Since now days constipation is major issue & hence educate to patient I explain in deep without any further prescription from lybrate platform/patients in general. Between times start with liver tonic: hepatica (ramkrishna pharma)? to improve functional efficiency of liver and digestion. Available at homeopathic pharmacy regarding yr second query your. Doctor is best judge in this case best wishes.

My mom is 45 year old and she has a regular knee pain.
She walks alot I think that may be a reason behind this.
Hi, knee pain might be due to degenerative process common at her age as osteolytic (breaking of bone material) activity along with harmonal changes (reduction in estrogen) occurs. Try giving her adequate calcium along with vitamin d supplementation & also she should do knee & supporting muscles strengthning exercises. If this improves her condition then continue doing same for entire life. If there is inadequate relief then visit a pain soecialist or orthopedician who can diagnose the grade of knee osteoarthritis or any other issue (such as cartilage or ligament problem) & treat further. Important thing to understand here is no one can stop the degenerative process of body, you can delay the degeration by conservative management or sometime even interventions for pain relief such as viscosupplementation, cortisone injection, prp therapy or genicular nerve block, but if degeneration wins over conservative or preventive measures than one has to go for knee replacement. Hope it helps.

Know More About Arthritis

MS - Orthopaedics, MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Play video

Dear friends, I am Dr Shekhar Shrivastav. I am senior consultant orthopaedic at Sant Parmanand Hospital, Delhi. Today, we'll be discussing Arthritis and specifically arthritis of the knee joint.

Now people usually come and ask me what do you mean by arthritis. So arthritis is the inflammation of the joint. Joint is made up of two ends of the bone which are lined by an articular cartilage which helps in a smooth motion of the joint. So when that cartilage gets destroyed you get arthritis. Now it can get destroyed due to various reasons but the most common reasons are due to ageing process which we call osteoarthritis. So there is degenerative wear and tear of the joint which leads to osteoarthritis or there can be an inflammatory cause such as rheumatoid arthritis which involves the lining of the joint and damages the cartilage. Now then people ask or most of the people who come to us with arthritis involve arthritis of the knee joint. So knee joint is the joint which is common in which is most commonly involved in osteoarthritis of the knee joint. The patient usually comes with pain, swelling and stiffness. They have difficulty in walking, climbing stairs and sometimes in severe cases, they have pain even at rest.

How do we manage that?

Now in order to manage that first, we should know what is the cause of arthritis? So we do some x-rays. X-rays give us an idea about the cause of arthritis as well as the extent of the damage. Now we also go for some blood tests which will give us an information if it's because of an inflammation or any infection. So these are the various causes of arthritis.

Now how do you manage our practice?

Patient has a company with pain, swelling and such disability so initially, we start with conservative management which is nonoperative management. So in that we ask the patient to do some lifestyle modification like we asked them to avoid using stairs or if they are using stairs then they have to use a railing so that there is not much stress on the joints. If they are into sports then we ask them to shift from contact sports like jogging or Aerobic to low impact exercises like swimming or cycling. We send them for physiotherapy. Physiotherapy helps a lot in arthritis. It helps in gaining strength in the muscles which protects the joint and it also gives increased flexibility and moment of the joint. We can give some medications and form of painkillers and thin perimeter because they reduce the inflammation, reduces the pain and in acute cases we can also inject the region.

Now, in severe arthritis when all this treatment has failed in that case it requires surgery. Surgery can be in different form. If the patient is having any loose fragment which is causing locking, then, in that case, we can go for arthroscope which is a keyhole surgery, where we make just small incisions like the tip of this pen, we put our instruments inside and we take out that piece which is a simple thing. In severe cases, we go for replacements. So it can be either partial replacement or total knee replacement. Now in severe cases with patients of great disability who have difficulty in walking who have pain on each step, who have pain even at rest, knee replacement surgery is a boon for these patients. It increases their activity, it increases their social life and it also makes them more mobile.

So if you want to know more about arthritis, if you are suffering from this problem and you want treatment you can contact me through lybrate or you can contact me at Sant Parmanand Hospital, Delhi.

Thank you.
