When Should You Consider Liposuction?

When Should You Consider Liposuction?

Sometimes, even a strict diet and strenuous exercise doesn't give you the body shape you dream of. In such cases, liposuction can be the answer to the problem of excess fat you are facing. Liposuction is a surgical procedure of removing stubborn fat bulges from the body. Age is not a major consideration with liposuction as long as your skin is firm and elastic. Else, your skin may begin to sag in places where the fat has been removed. It is important to note that liposuction does not remove cellulite but only removes fat. Thus, for people with cellulite, liposuction may not give them the results they desire.

If you're thinking of undergoing liposuction, do not expect the procedure to give you a supermodel's figure. Be realistic in your expectations. Here are a few other things to keep in mind.

  1. Liposuction does not show instant results: Recovery from a liposuction surgery is quick and you may be back to your normal routine within a few weeks. However, the treated area may still look swollen. This can take two to three months to subside. Hence work backwards and time your surgery with regard to major life events.
  2. The results are long lasting: Undergoing liposuction surgery does not mean that you will not be overweight again, but it means that fat will not collect in the areas that have been treated. If you do gain weight, the fat will be redistributed to other areas.
  3. Smoking and alcohol must be avoided: Smoking and alcohol both inhibit healing. It also increases your risk of complications during the surgery. Stop drinking and smoking at least three weeks prior to your surgery, and avoid it until your body has healed completely.
  4. Can be beneficial for many parts of the body: Liposuction can be performed on many areas of the body. The thighs, abdomen, breasts and buttocks are common areas where this surgery is performed. Other areas are the back, face and neck.

Like any other surgery, liposuction has its risks. While some risks are very rare, others can be quite common. Here are three minor risks that you should be aware of.

  1. Excessive liposuction: Removing too much fat can leave your skin looking unnatural and uneven.
  2. Skin discoloration: When making an incision for liposuction, the skin cells in the area may rupture and release melanin into the surrounding area. This can cause prolonged hyper pigmentation that can take 4-6 months to heal. Patients with a dark skin tone have a higher risk of hyper pigmentation.
  3. Swelling and bruising: When liposuction is performed on the lower part of the body, swelling and bruising are common side effects. This usually disappears within 2-3 days. Choosing open drainage vs. placing sutures on the incision sites can reduce the chances of this happening.

Breast Reconstruction - 3 Things To Know About It!

Breast Reconstruction - 3 Things To Know About It!

Breast reconstruction is the surgical procedure of creating a new breast shape. In some cases, it is done after the removal of the whole breast or part of the breast. In typical cases, breast reconstruction surgeries take place during or after mastectomy, which is the surgical procedure of removing a woman's breast. But it can be done even years after a mastectomy.

1. Factors to consider before opting for the surgeryConditions like obesity, smoking, diabetes, cardiac dysfunctions and high blood pressure are few of the many points that should be considered before opting for reconstruction. The presence of these conditions may complicate cases and in some episodes may pose a significant threat to a patient's life.

Also, women diagnosed with breast cancer or at a high risk of developing such in the future may have to opt for mastectomy. In such cases, the doctor may suggest breast reconstruction after the process.

2. The process of the surgery - Typically, breast reconstruction surgeries are done using an implant. Implant breast reconstruction includes the restoration of the shape and volume of the breast. The newly formed breast will not droop with age and may appear higher than the other one.

Implant reconstruction is also useful for women with small and firm breasts as it avoids the need for other extensive surgeries.

Another type of breast reconstruction would include a procedure where one's own tissue is used. Tissue from the abdomen, buttocks, and inside of the thigh is generally used to replace the existing breast tissue. Similar to this is the procedure where a patient's own fat is processed and used to create a breast. This is commonly known as fat injection.

3. Limitations of a breast reconstruction surgery - There are certain limitations present in the process of breast reconstruction. Reconstructed breasts will not look or feel exactly the same way as before. Several appointments and cosmetic treatments might be required to obtain the best results. In usual cases, reconstructed breasts do not have a nipple. But one can be created using surgery at a later date.

Laser Skin Tightening Procedure - All You Wanted To Know!

Laser Skin Tightening Procedure - All You Wanted To Know!

Laser skin tightening is a procedure that uses laser to enhance the appearance of the skin and treat minor facial flaws. This procedure is performed with the help of two types of lasers: ablative and nonablative laser. Ablative laser is used to remove thin layers of skin, while a non-ablative laser is one which causes growth of collagen and tightens the skin underneath.

Non-ablative laser is less invasive and requires less time to recover; although it's less effective than laser resurfacing, which is done with an ablative laser.

A laser tightening skin procedure can decrease fines lines on the face, making you look younger and giving a smooth appearance to your skin. It can also be used to treat uneven skin tone and improve your complexion, besides helping the treatment of sunburns and scars to a certain extent.

This procedure is usually used to treat:

  1. Wrinkles
  2. Liver or age spots
  3. Skin damage caused by sun rays
  4. Scars caused due to accidents, chicken pox or severe acne
  5. Irregular or uneven skin tone or texture

Before performing the procedure a doctor is likely to check your

  1. Medical history - Doctors cross check your current and previous medical history, including medications and medical conditions.
  2. Physical examination - A skin test is very common prior to performing such a surgery.

After the procedure is carried out, you may encounter initial minor problems like acne, itching, swelling or redness.

You may be advised to take medications and to avoid direct exposure to sunlight. During the procedure, a highly intense beam of light is directed on the skin. This laser beam destroys the upper layer of skin and also heats the underlying layers of epithelial cells. Resultantly, it causes the collagen fibers to shrink, thereby tightening your skin and giving you a younger appearance. Post the procedure, ice packs can be used to cool down the skin.

What Makes You A Good Candidate For A Hair Transplant?

What Makes You A Good Candidate For A Hair Transplant?

Opting for a hair transplant can be one of the many ways in which you can curb your receding hairline and put an end to baldness. This procedure involves taking hair from areas of the head that have dense hair growth, such as the back of the scalp, and transplanting it to the site where new hair needs to be created.

If you’re a MAN, these points should decide the time for getting a hair transplant surgery:

  • You have been losing hair from male pattern baldness( a pattern of hair thinning and hair loss that occurs on the crown area, forming an ‘M’ shape) over years.
  • Your hair loss persists despite taking medications to stop it.
  • Your hair fall has reached a plateau stage (no growth or loss phase) and has stabilised.
  • If you’ve experienced hair loss due to burns, trauma or cosmetic procedures.

If you’re a WOMAN, the right time to opt for a hair transplant procedure is when:

  • You have lost hair as a result of burns or trauma.
  • Your hair loss has been brought on by cosmetic procedures, like face lifts.
  • You have female pattern hair loss.

4 MYTHS associated with hair transplant you should stop believing!

Myth 1: Hair transplant gives you a head full of hair
Fact: This is not the case. Hair transplant only serves to lessen your bald appearance. It is a procedure that works by re-distributing your existing scalp hair in order to advance the front hairline. As a result, you end up looking younger with an appearance of a fuller head of hair.

Myth 2: It can be carried out at any age
Fact: This procedure should be ideally performed when your hairfall has more or less stopped experiencing any change, following a period of activity. Although it’s not easy to define the exact age as to when you would reach the plateau stage, this procedure should be done after 23 years of age.

Myth 3: It does not leave behind any scars
Fact: You can expect minimal scarring in a hair transplant surgery. Of the varied methods employed in hair transplant, it’s the FUE (follicular unit extraction) method that doesn’t leave behind a linear scar, but multiple small dots in the area from where the hair has been taken. They are hardly visible to the naked eye and hence FUE is more popular now-a-days.

Myth 4: It’s a very painful procedure
Fact: Hair transplant is performed under local anaesthesia. The site where follicular units will be harvested is made numb using sedatives and injections of local anaesthetic medicines, so that you don’t feel any pain whatsoever.

Nose Job - 5 Myths Decoded!

Nose Job - 5 Myths Decoded!

With nose job or rhinoplasty turning out to be an increasingly popular surgical procedure these days in India, potential patients are presented to a great deal of data, some real, some skeptical, and some downright false.

Here are 5 of the top myths busted.

1.  The surgery is a fairly simple procedure
Nose job is one of the most complex and challenging operations in plastic surgery. Not only must the nose be in symmetry with the face, but also every segment of the nose must be directly proportionate with all of the others.

2.  Your nose can resemble any superstar's nose of your picking
A prospective nose job patient ought to have practical desires. Every individual's face and visage is different. John Abraham's nose would not look great on each man, nor is it achievable. Similarly, Kareena Kapoor’s nose would not suit every woman, however becoming it is on her. In Rhinoplasty overexpectation and unrealistic expectation is  always a cause of dissatisfaction. It is impossible to have a nose like Katrina or Sharukh Khan.

3. The anaesthesia used in the surgery is dangerous
Rhinoplasty is mostly carried out under general anaesthesia, which makes you unconscious during the whole experience. However, the anaesthesia used is completely safe. In fact, for minor procedures, a nose job can even be performed under local anaesthesia. Most patients who have undergone this surgery are healthy, and risks of long-term complications are exceptionally rare.

4. A second surgery is almost always required to get it right
While a revision surgery can be a reality when going through a nose job (as high as 10-15% in a few studies), it ideally should be a one-time operation only. Technically, the newly constructed nose is one that’s designed for life. That aside, because of the complexities of the operation and the variability in each person’s anatomy, skin, and healing, on certain occasions a revision surgery becomes necessary. When it occasionally occurs, usually it’s for something relatively minor such as a small residual bump.

5. A nose job is so expensive that only the very wealthy can afford it
Surprisingly, minor yet high-quality rhinoplasty procedures can start at as low as even INR 20,000 in India, which is not as expensive compared to several other kinds of plastic/cosmetic surgery procedures.

Caution: Avoid silicone implants for a nose job as they not good and have long term complications as extrusion and displacement.

Hair Transplant - Who All Are Eligible For It?

Hair Transplant - Who All Are Eligible For It?

Hair density effectively means the number of follicular units present in one square centimeter. For an average male, the hair density stands at 90-110 follicular units for each square centimeter. When baldness sets in, the density of the follicle becomes thin. The density can then be increased through hair transplantation. Having said this, there are several implications of a successful hair transplant. This article will try to explore the same.

Natural appearance of the hair:

Often there are apprehensions among people as to how the transplanted hair will look like. To answer this, transplanted hair looks very natural, has a thick appearance and are long. High-density transplant is by far the most sort after technique to get a naturally looking hair.

Follicular units:

There are a few follicular units that the scalp possesses, which are permanent in nature. Doctors use these follicles for hair transplant in a person. For an average transplant, the density ranges from 45-60 follicular units in every square centimeter. At this rate, a person suffering from grade 4 baldness, requires around 2500 follicles to cover the mid-scalp region. However, for a thick transplant, it is necessary to have around 5000 follicular unit, meaning 100-110 follicular units in every square centimeter. Doctors have a to gauge whether there are 5000 follicular units available in a person. An over-inclusion of follicular units can permanently delete them, resulting in permanent baldness with no scope of future transplant. It is, therefore, necessary to correctly evaluate the number of permanent follicles available and the number of total follicular units to be transplanted.

Follicle survival:

Once a follicle gets implanted in the skin, it results in a lack of blood supply for the new hair. This is a critical condition since the lack of blood supply can destroy the follicular unit for good. Doctors, take a critical call as to how many punctures need to be made for a successful transplant. Patients suffering from diabetes or atherosclerosis are advised to consult the doctor before going ahead with a hair transplant. Since patients suffering from these diseases already have less blood supply in the scalp region, the effectiveness of a transplant comes under question.

Who is eligible for a high-density transplant?

A high-density transplant is only possible for those persons who have a greater number of permanent follicle units. It becomes effective for those patients whose area of baldness is relatively less as compared to others.

Surgery cost

The cost of a surgery depends on the number of follicular units transplanted. Since high-density transplant increases the cost slightly but the results are awesome.

Vaser Liposuction - A Fat Reduction Procedure!

Vaser Liposuction - A Fat Reduction Procedure!

Vaser liposuction is a superior sculpting procedure that can significantly eradicate fat, unify the underlying muscle and improve muscle proportion. It is a revolutionary process that can target a specific segment of fat, eliminate it successfully from the body and redefine the shape of the body. Some of the areas where 4D body sculpting or Vaser lipo is extremely effective includes the abdomen, chest, upper legs, upper arm, buttocks and the back area.

Who is an ideal candidate?

4D liposuction can be performed on any individual who is ready to undergo it and has a positive frame of mind towards body shape. It aims to remove fat pockets on a specific portion of the body as mentioned earlier.

Some of the other considerations that should be factored in while undergoing this procedure include the following:

  1. Young age - People within the age bracket of 20-35 tend to heal quickly compared to higher age groups. Since the skin adapts more favourably towards this age segment, it makes sense to undergo 4D body sculpting at an earlier age.
  2. Good health - An overall good health index significantly increases the chances of a successful procedure. This essentially means a person who has not undergone any major procedure in the recent past, has no history of heart or blood pressure related disorders.
  3. No underlying disease - A person going through any major diseases should not sign up for procedures such as these, as they can seriously undermine the overall health. A prior consultation with a medical practitioner is necessary in such as case.
  4. Lifestyle changes - Vaser lipo or 4D body sculpting requires a person to undergo minor lifestyle changes such as timely eating, eating in small portions, refraining from alcohol, drug abuse, smoking, ready to spend at least 15-20 minutes every day working out etc.

How is the procedure performed?

This procedure requires an anaesthetist to administer local anaesthesia so that the surgical site could be numbed. This ensures that no pain or uncomfortable feeling is felt while the procedure is underway. The doctors then use a marker to mark the fat pockets in the body. This is followed by the use of ultrasonic sound to make the fat cells go loose and ensure that the fat cells reduce their adhesion. This is achieved by inserting a small incision, which is no more than 2-4 mm. This technique ensures zero to no damage to the surrounding tissues. The underlying fat deposits are carefully removed, keeping in mind the body posture and naturals contours. The best part of this type of surgery is the fact that it does not leave any mark in the body. After a week or two, it is difficult to spot the incision. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a cosmetic physician.
