Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. It is a difficult task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (Self-Monitoring of Blood glucose – SMBG). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of Fasting sugar (FBS) and 2 hours after food (PPBS), & HbA1C (inform me) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ Insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & life style. For diabetes, hypertension (high BP) and many long-term illness control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance... if you keep in touch personally.

Hello, Thanks for the query. During pregnancy, it is very essential to maintain blood glucose in a very narrow range like 90 to 120 mg all through out the day. If high glucose occurs it has multiple consequences to the growing fetus like affecting it growth, a large baby may occur causing difficulty in delivery. Plus there can be very bad out comes of the pregnancy. To avoid all that it is absolutely essential to maintain glucose levels as mentioned above. Therefore, Insulin will be essential. Only diet control is unlikely to benefit. So please follow the doctor's advise. Also keep checking the glucose levels regularly. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. Based on the details mentioned it looks like her blood glucose level is not in good control. It is better if her HbA1c% is checked, which gives an idea about long term control. Usually in patients with long standing diabetes in later years, treatment with Insulin becomes a necessity. Because oral drugs do not give necessary response. My suggestion is please comeback with following details: Fasting, PP glucose levels, HbA1c%, dietary pattern extent of daily exercise and dosage of current medication, preferably in a private conversation (paid consultation, where I will be able to guide specifically plus prescribe the required drugs including Insulin if needed. Thanks.

If a person is suffering from diabetes what health recondition should given to her/him.
Increase thirst, increased frequency of urination are some initial symptoms of diabetes but it can vary from being completely asymptomatic to non specific symptoms like weakness, tingling in feet, dry mouth, blurry vision, burning during urination. You need to follow a healthy lifestyle to prevent such metabolic diseases. Type 1 usually occurs at younger age due to insulin deficiency and treated with insulin injections. Type 2 usually in adults due to insulin resistance and treated with oral medicines. It can't be cured completely but you can keep it controlled by taking these precautions.

It was 80 to 90 never more than that what could be the reason and should I consider myself diabetic or I am a normal person?

For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - have small frequent meals. Do not fast for more than 2-3 hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery, sugar. Avoid junk foods. Exercise and stay active. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.

dry mouth is a side-effect of Starpress xl which is metoprolol and it is not going to harm you. But it is a very good medicine for your heart, so should continue your medicine, if it bothers you too much you can ask your doctor to change the XL version to a simple version. So nothing to panic or worry.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Fasting blood glucose 140 to 160 mg is very high, shows presence of uncontrolled diabetes. Since PP level and HbA1c% is not mentioned it is difficult to comment. Please get those checked and come back. Looking at fasting levels there is a need for appropriate antidiabetic treatment with modern medicines. Plus diet restriction and regular exercise also are required. Thanks.

Hello Mr. Lybrate-user, first of all I would like to tell you don't be disappointed, there are so many people who are living with diabetes life long but it is under controlled with the help of medicine & diet planning. Had you done your hba1c? it should be in the range of 6-6.5% for good control of diabetes. There are some dietary changes that will help you. Take small & frequent meal. Take more & more green leafy vegetables. Avoid simple sugar & simple carbs in your diet. Avoid table salt in meal. Do not take chips, papad, pickel or any other salty products. Avoid oily/ fried / outside food. Take whole wheat products or fiber rich diet like daliya/ oats/ multigrain flour etc. Do regular walk/ exercise/ swimming/ jogging whatever you like atleast for 30 minutes. Take a consultation with the dietician. One most important thing regarding your kidney & liver, discuss with your treating doctor for lft (liver function test) & kft (kidney function test) test. I think you should go through complete annual/ half yearly health check-up.
