As for as your mother is concerned she needs to see a diabetologist so that dietary advice and appropriate medicines can be prescribed. As far your wife is concerned please ensure that she has a well balanced diet high in proteins like fish, chicken, pulses and keeps the wound site clean and dry.

However, to suggest a specific diet, I need more details like fbs< ppbs, hba1c%, extent of daily exercise, current diet & bmi it is better if you come in a private conversation with above details, then I can give a specific diet suitable to your needs. I am 68 years old male my blood sugar is 160 fasting. Lam taking xila- m its okay or not ?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
It is not as easy task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (self-monitoring of blood glucose? smbg). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of fasting sugar (fbs) and 2 hours after food (ppbs) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ insulin will be needed. For sugar control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me privately with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance. If you keep in touch.

What should be an ideal diet for 50 year male with activity living habit who is suffering from diabetics.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
What should be an ideal diet for 50 year male with activity living habit who is suffering from diabetics.
Mr. Lybrate-user, diet plan for a person with diabetes is not very different f than one for a normal person. He needs to take a balanced diet, with 50 to 55% of calories coming from carbs, 15% from proteins & 25 to 30 % from fats. But major difference is in relation to type of foods. He should avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, other bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks (colas), fructose corn syrup containing foods, highly processed food products and high fat milk products. He should consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits (100 g a day). Always use whole grain products and flour. Use more of millets and fiber containing seeds like flax seeds, fenugreek etc. As regards a specific diet plan for you I need to know following details: 1) fasting & pp glucose levels, hbac1%, 2) present drugs with dosage, 3) extent of daily exercise & 4) present diet pattern. You will have to plan caloric intake based on above and ideal body weight (72 kgs). Thanks.

If a normal indvidual takes insulin then blood sugar goes critically down or precipitate hypoglycemia. It could be fatal sometimes. Hypoglycemia symptoms are palpitations, tremors, sweating, confusion etc in sever case coma and death. Without diabetologist or physicians prescription it is difficult to get insulin injections. My elder brother is suffering from diabetes/sugar. What food is beneficial to prevent sugar.

MBBS, MD - General Medicine, FACE, FACP, FRCP (London)
Diabetologist, Lucknow
My elder brother is suffering from diabetes/sugar. What food is beneficial to prevent sugar.
If he is having Diabetes, merely food advise will not be enough. He must take medicines too. Food should be restricted in carbohydrate not more than 65 % of total calories. Direct sugar and sugar containing food materials should be completely avoided. There should be at least 2-3 hours gap in eating. Timing of food is also important.
