Osteoporosis Spine Fractures: Risks, Symptoms and Treatments

Osteoporosis is a condition wherein the bones become brittle and weak; so much so that even mildly stressful activities such as coughing, bending over or even a slight fall (such as the one from a high rise chair) can result in fractures. Osteoporosis-related fractures commonly occur in the spine, hip or the wrist. The human body has a continuous mechanism of bone absorption and removal. In case of osteoporosis, the creation of new bones doesn’t happen in accordance with the removal of old bones.

Spinal Fractures:

The bones of the spine get extremely vulnerable to breakage and even cracking open. The fractures in the spine, also known as vertebral compression fractures can cause a sharp stinging pain in the back that may make sitting, standing, or even walking a very tardy task.

Risk Factors:

  1. Increasing age

  2. Abnormally less or high body weight

  3. Smoking

  4. Menopause or low levels of sex hormones

  5. Gender: This disorder is more likely to affect women as compared to men. Also women, who are above 50 are more likely to suffer from this debilitating disorder.

  6. Race is a significant risk factor of osteoporosis. If you are of Asian descent, you are more likely to be affected by it.

  7. Having a family history of osteoporosis will put you at a greater risk of this disorder.

Symptoms:

  1. Fractured or collapsed vertebra causing back pain

  2. A stooped posture

  3. A shrunken appearance (as if one has had loss of height)

  4. Very fragile bones, thus increasing risks of fractures

  5. Severe and sudden pain in the back

  6. Difficulty in twisting or bending the body

Lower spine fractures are way more troublesome as compared to fractures in the upper spine. Fracturing more than a bone in the spine also remains a huge possibility.

Diagnosis and Treatment:

Firstly, an X-ray or a computerized tomography (CT scan) will be done to have a closer look at the bones. A bone density test is another commonly used method of diagnosing osteoporosis.

  1. Steroids and medications: Some medications may be used to prevent or combat osteoporosis. These include alendronate, ibandronate, risedronate and zoledronic acid.

  2. Physical therapy: Just like muscles, bones get stronger too when you exercise. Weight-bearing and muscle- strengthening exercises are the most helpful in this regard and are considered best for the treatment of osteoporosis. Cardiovascular exercises such as walking, jogging or even swimming can prove to be immensely beneficial.

  3. Diet: Make a diet chart that includes high-calcium food items, dairy products such as yogurt, cheese, and low-fat milk, tofu, green vegetables such as collard greens and broccoli, sea fish such as salmon and sardines.

  4. Salt: Limit salt intake

  5. Therapy: Hormone replacement therapy (treatment method consisting of estrogens to alleviate and treat symptoms of osteoporosis) is another method of treatment that can be recommended by the doctor. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

I would like to examine the patient in detail & investigate. Preliminary investigations suggested: hb, tlc, dlc, esr, blood sugar fasting & pp, uric acid, vit d urine r/e x-ray of the affected part. Anyway it may be tried. Do hot fomentation paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Bio d3 max 1 tab od x10. Make sure that the patient is not allergic to any of the medicines that patient is going to take. For emergency treatment contact your nearest hospital or family doctor. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick mattress are harmful. Use no pillow under the head.

Hi! I am 25 years old working as Junior engineer. I drunk a lot as I am having lot of stress due to family problem. Since last couple of weeks I am getting backache plus the whole body pains even my arms and leg. I ask my wife to massage it everyday and has become a routine as daily process. Now we are trying to have a baby but its been about three to four months and she cannot conceive. I smoke a lot too. My friends circle told me that it is because I drinks and smoke a lot, that's the reason. Can it really be because of it? People do have such habit but they are happy. Hi, where are you from lybrate-user? in fact, smoking and drinking (alcohol) does not solve any issues. It may rather complicate stuff as it is damaging for your health. Apparently, myalgia, as you experience is associated with your mental stress and depression. First and foremost, I would advise you a complete cessation of drinking as well as smoking gradually over the next couple of days. Do exercise, yoga and'pranayam'/ breath control daily for self control and health. Streamline your diet and lifestyle too. Take lots of leafy greens and fruits on a daily basis and stay well hydrated. Consume fresh turmeric, lemon, garlic and ginger in culinary doses, daily. Additionally, a capsule of cod liver oil daily with food over the next 2 weeks helps too. Listen to melodious music of choice on a regular basis and take some time out for meditation daily. Also, would advise you to get a chest x-ray & liver function test done and apprise me accordingly. Hope this helps. Take care and all the very best.

Back pain may be due to strain, sprain, weather change etc. *Avoid bending forward while working on lap top or for any other work. *Don’t sit continuously working on laptop etc. Get up periodically and move around. *Restrict bike driving as far as possible. *Don’t carry laptop or any load on your shoulder. Carrying very light loads equally with both hands is better *Sit straight so that back bone gets proper support. A dining chair is better than a laid back sofa. *You can use mustard oil for massage which is good in winter season for relieving pain. Eucalyptus oil is also good *Soft bed will not give proper support to your back bone. Hard bed with thin mattress and thin pillow is better. *Get yourself tested whether you have spondylitis problem. Homoeopathy has a good treatment for this without adverse effects. Take Calc fluor 200--once daily in the morning.

Because of your age I am assuming a lot of your stress is work related. The stress that you feel is not dependent on the stressor: It is entirely dependent on your perception of stress. Change your perception, there is no stress: it’s like looking at a glass half full or half empty. Life is difficult no doubt, as a general rule, but what we do adds to the stress in our response. We add to the stress of life instead of reducing it or learning to deal with it. Many of us follow a policy of avoidance. We cannot do that all of our lives. So the first thing to do is to change your perception. For example, look at it as a challenge that you would like to meet with a positive outlook. See everything as a gift from God to perform as though you are doing it for Him. God never gives us work to do beyond our capacity. Build a good constitution mentally, emotionally and physically to combat stress. Eat healthily, sleep well, and exercise regularly. Talk about your emotions regularly to a good friend every day. I suspect that anger is a good part of yoru emotional problem. Learn stress management techniques, which is all about expressing your feelings in appropriate ways. Do Yoga and meditation. Pray every day to God to give you the strength, and offer your work as a prayer to Him – you will give your best and you will feel so satisfied when you do it well. At work you must learn to delegate much or some of your work to subordinates. If you do not trust, you will find it difficult to delegate. You need to examine if your work is too stressful for various reasons. It is the one place you will be spending the greatest part of your awake life, more than even with your family! This being the case any stress there can take a severe toll: the stress in the work is mostly related to relationships. We are always into relationships and you need to find a very amicable way to interact with people. You cannot avoid people all your life: no man is an island! If it is people related, you will need to examine whether you are the cause or others the cause. If it has to do with workload, then you will need to discuss that with your colleagues first and if they think you are justified, then you will have to take it to the immediate boss. If it is injustice in the work spot, you will need to discuss it with the HR department. If you feel that you are doing more than you can manage or are qualified for, again you can consult the HR department. If you are emotionally distraught, then there may be some work for you to do with a counselor. This is where stress is mostly felt. When you do not express feelings you will land up with stress. Check what feelings you are not dealing with and then tackle that to find relief which is a permanent solution. To resolve it you need to deal with the unexpressed feelings which may have become a habit from childhood. Meet with a counselor and that person will help you process your feelings and find ways to express them once and for all and give you permanent relief. You will see an immediate change for the better.

First of all check your posture when you are lifting any material like heavy bucket . And try to lift the heavy bucket without bending your back . you may lift the bucket after bending your knees only. This will definitely help you. * Gentle massage with lukewarm mustard oil of your waist area will also give you relief. * Surya Namaskar is only exercise which you need to do. * In diet vegetable protein of cereal , B complex supplements and half teaspoon of haldi in a cup of milk for seven days will give you enough relief.

Bhujang asana -- lie flat on your stomach, keeping the palms out, bend the neck backward, take a deep breath and while holding it for 6 seconds, raise the chest up. Release breath and relax your body. Repeat the exercise 15 times twice daily. Core strengthening exercises- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.

Hello, you have to avoid fast food, fried food. Your diet must contain salad at least 1 full dish n need to eat fruit maximum. Take water at least five liter a day will help to detoxify body and loose weight avoid water after meal least 1 hour. Walk least 5 km will help you.

Taking pain killers is not the solution. It's just temporary. You hv to consult a physician with your detailed history to find out cause of your headache, then a definite treatment can be started. Taking pain killers for long time will damage your kidney and liver. So be careful.

Try this for joint pains try this. Identify the mid point between the ankle bone and tendons and give pressure with a blunt edge on either side of your foot for 2 minutes. Also give pressure in the web between 2nd and 3rd finger from your toe for 2 minutes. Finally give a good massage for both feet in hot water. Identify the dipping portion on the back of your knee folding. Press this dip with both middle fingers and hold your knee with your thumbs for support. Please swing 20 times morning and evenings. This will relieve your problem. Consult after 10 days.

Sleeping disturbances or insomnia in this young age could be due to depression and this could be different one it could be conflict, something went wrong better try to have words with your parents with open heart and with no fear, no need to worry about this everything would fine soon, take care (try hot milk prior to bed, try some exercise, bring back the confidence)

I have back pain sometimes lower side and sometimes upper back and most of the time the pain is there in my right hip and travels to my leg.

Start with physiotherapy sessions and learn exercise for spine. Use lumber spine belt also. Don' t sit on floors. Take calcium and methylcobalamine supplement with omega3
