All About Diarrhea in Children

MBBS, MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician
Ask Free Question
Diarrhea is a disorder that affects people of all age groups. Medically speaking, Diarrhea is a mechanism that the body uses to eliminate germs from the body. Usually this disorder lasts for a few days to a week. It is usually accompanied by nausea, fever and dehydration.

Children can be affected by diarrhea in a number of ways, some of them are:
1. Infections: Various infections, such as the ones caused by rotavirus and salmonella bacteria can lead to diarrhea. Usually diarrhea in children is caused by viruses; if it is viral in nature, then it can also cause stomach cramps, headache and vomiting. It also leads to loss of fluid from the body. Hence, the child's fluid intake should be compensated accordingly. Usually oral rehydration solution that contains nutrient such as potassium and sodium are preferred.

2. Medications: Intake of certain medications, such as antibiotics and laxatives can cause diarrhea in children. If the cause is due to antibiotic intake, then you should consult a doctor. The doctor may alter the dosage or ask to increase the child's water intake. Yoghurt may also help ease the symptoms of diarrhea if it is caused by antibiotics.

3. Food poisoning: Diarrhea may also result from food poisoning; symptoms of this type usually disappear quickly. Along with loose and watery stools, the child may vomit frequently.
The major complication that results from diarrhea is dehydration. Severe dehydration may lead to severe brain damage and seizures. It may also cause symptoms of dry mouth, fatigue, dizziness and dark yellow urine.

Certain preventive measures are:
1. Use your good judgment while eating outside. Do not consume food from places which use unhygienic modes of preparation.

2. Make sure your child does not drink contaminated water and there is access to clean and filtered water all the time.

3. Your child should be eating a balanced diet that primarily consists of vegetable and fruits. They also help in adding fiber to the diet that keeps your bowels healthy.

My son has suffer from a fever from 18th July to till now. My son is 4 year old. His body temperature is between 100-103 celsius. But we consult with our family Dr. On 19th July morning. Chloroquine is specific for malaria so unless yoyears child is suffering from malaria it will not help. Your child might be having a simple viral infection which usually responds to paracetamol that you are giving to your child. However it is difficult to say for sure without seeing the patient. So if your son does not respond or develops new symptoms or has persistent vomitting and not taking orally well I suggest to consult a paediatrician. Warm regards

My 4 year old daughter is suffering from cough since last three months, although a paediatrician was consulted however intermittent coughing persists.

Better to screen for bronchitis or asthma --> wait for 3 more days and then also doesn't reduce then get" peak flow metry" done at pediatrician's clinic and know the response of bronchodilator medicines in form of nebulisation, I think it would cure the problem. But has to assessed by a certified pediatrician not by your own.

hi I went through your query first of all I would like you to note that there is no relationship of a maternal food intake with any effect on baby's health. your diet should be complete as you are breastfeeding a baby.

All About Chronic Lung Disease in Infants

DAA, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS, DMRD

The newborn are often extremely susceptible to fatal diseases and the first few months of the infant's life calls for uncompromised care and vigilance. One of the most precarious diseases afflicting the newborn babies are chronic lung disorders. This condition mainly emanates from a damage to the lung tissue, which results in breathing troubles. Under such circumstances, the lung may collapse, being filled with fluids and end up oozing out harmful mucus. While a severe form of such lung diseases may often result in the death of the infant, in most cases the infants outgrow the disease and with proper care, grow up to lead a healthy life.

Most chronic lung diseases in infants are congenital and are spurred by a variety of causes.
1. Premature delivery: chronic lung diseases are recurrent in babies born prematurely, i. E. Before the lapse of at least 26 weeks of gestation age. Underweight infants also run the risk of suffering from this ailment. The lungs are not able to develop fully in such situations as a result of which they become prone to respiratory distresses. Another allied trigger to chronic lung disease is the use of ventilation on the premature babies. The forced breathing and imposed oxygen levels induced by ventilators often impair normal lung functions in babies.

2. Fluids in the lungs: certain babies are either born with or develop a condition where fluids accumulate in the lungs. This inflicts a lot of damage to the lungs and leads to such diseases.

3. Respiratory infections
Some babies are likely to acquire lung infections from certain disease causing viruses. This largely handicaps the normal lung functions.

4. Heart conditions: abnormal blood circulation in the heart also stimulates lung diseases in newborns. If the heart is unable to regulate the flow of blood to the lungs properly, then the chances of such diseases increase by leaps and bounds.

5. Inhaling harmful foreign materials
Certain particles often affect the health of the lungs tremendously. Exposure to meconium during delivery might result in the inflammations that potentially injure the lung tissues.

6. Nutrition deficiencies: if an infant's body lacks vital nutrients, it may result in a condition of malnutrition. Lack of vitamin a may cause chronic lung diseases.

Chronic lung diseases are usually recoverable with early detection and appropriate treatment. However, one needs to meticulously cater to the health needs of the baby, in order to ensure complete recovery and avert recurrence.

If you are feeding lactogen in bottle with nipple it can cause this. Stop bottle and feed from cup with spoon. Also give boiled water in between if you give formula feed. The best is to give breast milk and home made semisolids with boiled water in between.

He has normal weight for the age. Your feeling that he doesn't is generally mother's anxiety. Usually all babies refuse to eat when we force them. Besides they may be eating snacks etc in between which kills appetite. To be extra cautious it' ll be safer to check he does not have hypothyroidism by doing TFT and Hb estimation from a good lab. Keep me informed. Regards

The baby should get breast milk at least for 6 months. Mother should eat nutritious diet and take enough milk. She should also try to keep anxiety away. This should ensure enough milk supply. She should also feed the baby more often.

It is OK. As for choosing between cow’s milk and buffalo milk, cow’s milk is a better option to start with, as buffalo milk is rich in fat and difficult to digest. Indigestion can lead to diarrhea. While introducing milk, start by adding a few teaspoons of the pasteurized milk to soups, halwa and some room-temperature curd. If he/she tolerates this well, then over time the quantity can be increased with careful monitoring. When introducing buffalo milk, mothers must first boil the milk, let it cool and then remove the layer of cream before feeding the baby.
