Top 7 Mental Health Applications for Your Smart Phone

The smart phone revolution has changed our lives in many ways. With several adults and even tech savvy teenagers and children turning victims of problems like anxiety and depression, doctors are increasingly turning to mental health apps. Frequent use of tech gives a better avenue for communication, in this case between doctors and patients.

Here are the top 7 mental health apps that can be used by patients to improve their mental health

  1. Code Blue: Bullying is a real problem that has led many down the path of depression and suicide. And, sometimes the solution is closer than you think, in this case it is just a click away. With Code Blue, you can choose people from your contact to be a part of your support group. With just a few clicks, the app will alert the support group if the user needs their help. The app also communicates the user's location to the group and the group can indicate that help is on the way.
  2. Breath2Relax: Feeling too anxious or angry and want to let your bad side take over the situation. Launch Breath2Relax on your phone and you'll be walked through a series of breathing exercise that help to reduce stress, stabilize mood, control anger, and manage anxiety. It can be operated independently.
  3. Lantern: Lantern is a web and mobile based platform that combines cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques with advice from real experts. The app starts by measuring the users strengths, weaknesses, stress, anxiety, mood and social life and then tailors daily exercises that suits their pattern. Next the app matches you with a professional CBT coach who can answer any questions you have.
  4. PTSD Coach: PTSD stands for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD Coach is an app developed by the Department of Veterans Affairs' National Center for PTSD, intended for use by veterans, military personnel and civilians experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. The app provides a self assessment tool that tracks symptoms over a period of time and also connects with a support group from your contact list and locate nearby treatment programs.
  5. Optimism: Optimism is a family of applications that focus on self-tracking as a tool for coping with mental illnesses including depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety and PTSD. Users can record the intensity of their mood, which will eventually detect patterns and help identify problem triggers. . Users can create a customizable wellness plan to chart their coping mechanisms which will come from experience and understanding of their mental condition.
  6. Talkspace: This free app helps users connect with a therapist with whom they can chat anytime. It isn't exactly a substitute to in-person therapy, but more a precursor where the app's therapists can monitor and guide the user if they need more advanced help.
  7. Big white wall: Sometimes just knowing that there are others in the same boat as you is a big help and this is what the app does. It is a community where users with different type of mental health problems come together for discussion boards, reference articles and self-assessment tests. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Hi, you haven't mentioned for how many days your period is over. Intensity of colour of lines doesn't matter, if you can see two lines means your test is positive but twice invalid indicates you must get it tested atleast once from lab.

Dear user. FERTILE PHASE is the phase of a female's menstrual cycle when an egg (ovule) is released from the ovaries. In humans, ovulation occurs about midway through the menstrual cycle, after the follicular phase. The few days surrounding ovulation (from approximately days 10 to 18 of a 28 day cycle), constitute the most fertile phase. So if you have ejaculatory sexual inter course from day 10 from the first day of period and to day 20, the chances of pregnancy are much more. You must also understand that there are many other factors which determines the pregnancy. Take care.

Tadgola a great summer fruit

Tadgola a great fruit especially to have in summer, it actually cools you down although peeling the fruit is a little messy job.

Also known as ice apple, palm fruit or nungu. It is a delicious fruit, famous in maharashtra and tamil nadu, in summer. In bengal, it is known as taal. In bihar, it is known as taari.

It grows in clusters, and has a coconutty, brown exterior. On cutting open, each fruit had three to four jelly seeds that have a soft yellowish skin that darkens to a light brown when exposed to air.

They are a great source of potassium and low in sodium which helps to control blood pressure. They cool your body during summers and also help in maintaining electrolyte balance.

Eat this anytime of the day and enjoy it to the fullest in summers.

Lybrate-user - you may take this problem seriously, you need a immediate treatment, homeopathic treatment is safe and effective, causes - 1) having very dry skin or eczema can cause cracked, sore and bleeding nipples. If you have an eczema-like condition on your nipples or breasts it may be caused by: irritants in a cream, lotion, soap or perfume. 2) infections 3) small, benign, or noncancerous, tumors 4) hypothyroidism, or an under active thyroid.

My niece is 3 months pregnant and wants the pregnancy terminated. What r the chances and methods to be adopted. Pa advice.

MBBS, MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, Fellowship in Laparoscopy, DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology)
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Hello, that actually depends on her pregnancy duration. 3 months pregnancy is usually not terminated until or unless there is some gross defect in the baby or mother has some serious disease that she can not carry pregnancy. Better visit a local gynecologist who ll examine her first and then she ll tel you.

Coccydynia - Tailbone Pain

Coccydynia - Tailbone Pain

Coccydynia - Tailbone Pain:

The back bone or spine is made of a series of bones extending all the way from the neck (cervical) to the tail (coccyx). These joints, like others, are prone to inflammation, sprain and strain, some more than the others. The coccyx in particular is highly prone to inflammation and can lead to localized pain, which is very typical, with the pain in the tailbone. This is known as coccydynia.

What is coccydynia?

  • Literally, coccydynia translates to tailbone pain.
  • It is characterized by a sharp, localized pain between the buttocks in the tail bone.
  • It is often caused by injury to the pelvic area or the tail bone.
  • Sitting and/or leaning against the buttocks make it worse.
  • Pregnancy, when the additional hormones relax on the pelvic floor, also leads to increased pain of the tailbone.

Diagnosis:
The pain can be easily confused with other conditions like sciatica, fractured tailbone, tailbone infections like shingles, etc. However, for a trained medical person, the symptoms of tenderness and pain are quite diagnostic. Pilonidal sinus, fistula, pudendal neuralgia is also same as coccydynia and show same symptoms.

Management:

  • If there is a rash or inflammation, it needs to be evaluated further for additional problems.
  • Where possible, rest completely for a short period of time till the acute phase of pain subsides.
  • In case of injury, ensure there is no repeat injury to the same area.
  • Pain medications are used to relieve pain, where it is severe and intolerable.
  • In severe cases, cortisone injection may be given in the doctor s office. In addition to pain relief, it may even take care of the underlying problem per se.
  • Avoid sitting for prolonged periods where possible.
  • After the acute phase is over, when sitting for prolonged periods, sufficient padding is advised. This could be in the form of pillows or padded seats.
  • Sleeping on the sides is difficult, so sleep straight. If required, take a pillow in the middle.
  • Physiotherapy is also helpful in some people who have repeat attacks. This helps in pain management and controlling acute phases. There are specific tailbone stretches, which should be done under supervision.
  • Walking is one of the many effective ways to keep the tailbone unlocked, which helps in getting rid of the pain and avoiding spasms of the muscles around the tailbone.
  • Best internal manipulation and pain management can be done with coccyx exercise.
  • The time taken for healing of the tailbone depends on whether it is a simple bruise or a severe one. The former would heal completely in about four weeks, while the latter will take about 12 weeks.

My girlfriend has not got periods since 1 month. This has happened before too. What could be the reason?

DGO, MD, MRCOG, CCST, Accredation in Colposcopy
Gynaecologist, Kolkata
My girlfriend has not got periods since 1 month. This has happened before too. What could be the reason?
She needs to get a urine pregnancy test first to exclude pregnancy. If negative she needs to do a few tests to exclude a condition called Polycystic ovaries and hormonal pills to induce a period.
