Hi I am a 26 year female married and I have got a kid. Day before yesterday me and my husband had unprotected sex. As a precaution before 12 hours I have taken I pill tablet. My menstruation cycle is 28 days and starting date of last cycle was 15th May 16. I have 2 questions. 1. As ovulation date is near and I have taken I pill tablet is it OK that I shall not get pregnant? 2. Can we have unprotected sex till my next menstruation cycle?

DNB (Obstetrics and Gynecology), Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist,
I pill has a failure rate if 6-10%. So there are chances that you can get pregnant. Although 90 % chances are there that you will not get pregnant. No you cannot have unprotected sex again.

What Causes WARTs? Can We Prevent it?

MBBS, MD - Dermatology

What Causes WARTs? Can We Prevent it?

What causes warts? Can we prevent it?

Warts are small formations that occur on the skin. They appear in the form of dark protruding bumps or brown flat lesion on the skin surface. Sometimes they might also have tiny black specks on them. Warts usually form on the hands, feet, face and genitals, although they may appear on other parts of the body in some cases.

What causes the formation of warts?

Common warts are caused due to infection of the outermost layer of skin that occurs as a result of viral contamination. The virus that is responsible for this condition belongs to the human papillomavirus (HPV) family.

This infection is highly contagious and easily spreads from one person to the next. It is most likely to occur on skin that is cut or damaged as that allows easy access for the virus to enter the skin system.

How to prevent the formation of warts?

Common warts are contagious and spread very easily. Preventing the spread of the HPV virus can be done through simple steps that will help you avoid getting affected by this condition.

Some of the preventive measures that can be adopted are as follows:

- picking and scratching on warts should be avoided

- avoid biting fingernails as gnawing on the skin around the nails makes it more prone to infection

- grooming, brushing and shaving around infected areas should be done with care

- moisture and dampness should be avoided as the virus thrives on it

Do not self-medicate with lime (chuna), garlic, onion or Dettol.

Treatment

Wart removal should be done by a qualified dermatologist. It is simple, safe opd procedure which takes few minutes only and does not leave any scars.

Infertility - A Complete Guide!

Infertility - A Complete Guide!

The term infertility in females explains a wide range of disorders but in order to simplify things, lets’ just say, infertility in women is a condition in which women are unable to conceive. There are numerous reasons that can be responsible for this situation and although some are preventable or curable, most others have no specific cure or treatment.

Ovulatory Disorders

One of the most common reasons for infertility is an ovulatory disorder. Almost 30 percent of female infertility is caused due to this reason. 70 percent of such infertility is treatable with drugs such as Reprones/Menogan and Clomiphene. Here is a list of causes of failed ovulation-

  1. Disruption in the complex hormonal balance.

  2. Ovaries fail to produce mature eggs. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is the most common disorder causing this problem. This syndrome has reduced FSH production and increased production of LH, Oestrogen and Testosterone. Suppressed FSH production may cause the partial development of ovarian follicles.

  3. Hypothalamus may malfunction thereby causing the pituitary to malfunction, thus losing control over the process or FSH and LH production.

  4. Physical damage to the ovaries by multiple surgeries or due to the formation of cysts.

  5. A rare case of premature menopause.

  6. Problems of the follicle.

  7. Poor functioning of fallopian tubes

Diseases or disorders in the tube have been another major reason of infertility in women. Almost 25 percent of women infertility occurs due to this reason. Although treatments exist, success rates of the treatments are as high as 30 percent. The causes of tube damage may be as follows-

  1. Infection caused by bacteria or viruses

  2. Abdominal diseases like colitis and appendicitis

  3. Previous pelvic or abdominal surgeries.

  4. A condition called ectopic pregnancy which occurs in the tube, and even if very carefully but successfully overcome, may leave permanent damage.

  5. Rare congenital defects in which women may be born with tube anomalies.

Endometriosis

This is the condition where the endometrium expands excessively thereby preventing individuals from getting pregnant. This affects almost 10 percent of the population of infertile women. Almost 40 percent of women with endometriosis are infertile.

Other Factors

Other additional factors may include:

  1. Abnormal uterus

  2. Congenital diseases

  3. Behavioural factors like personal habits, lifestyle and health factors.

  4. Exercise and diet- extremely overweight or underweight women may have problems in conceiving.

  5. Cigarette smoking reduces the chances of conceiving by one-third.

  6. Alcohol increases the chances of birth defects.

Hence, pregnancy is tougher than it might really seem. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

Hello Madam/Sir, Greetings. My age is 31. I am married since three years and now trying to conceive from the last two months. we have sex during the 13th and 14th day after my periods. But failed to conceive. My periods are regular and my hormone levels are normal. My Gynaec gave me ovulation induction medicines for 3 months. I was unable to go for TVS for the first two months of medication and the third time I went for regular trans vaginal scan. My follicle was ready but she diagnosed polypoid endocervical thickening of 1.0 X 0.4 cm thickness and she stressed to do IUI and told that there is no chance of conceiving until the polyp is removed. Suggest me to get conceive. Thanking You.

Before jumping into IUI, your detailed work up must be done as well as your husband's semen analysis. Now, ''polypoid endocervical thickening'' is misnomer. We should exactly detect the problem. If there is big polyp or bleeding polyp, it should be removed. Otherwise, we can go for simple IUI. Wish you all the best.

If doctor advised you to remove fibroadenoma with operation then get operation for that because it can cause harmful effect in future. Cause exactly not known but estrogen hormone play an important role in formation of fibroadnoma. If menses are irregular then consult to doctor for that.

Do a blood test called serum beta hcg to rule out pregnancy. If negative, then there are many other reasons for a missed period, such as hormonal imbalance, hypothyroidism, cysts in ovaries etc. You will need to get an ultrasound of pelvic organs along with few blood tests to find out the cause of this. Please meet a gynaecologist for further evaluation.
