HYPOTHYROIDISM:--- where there is deficiency of thyroxine hormone leading to sluggishness, tired feeling, weight increase, slow heart beats, intolerance to cold, swelling of legs, feet and face, difficulty in concentrating and at times in speech. Go for walk, Take plenty of water, high-carbohydrate foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta and bread. Hi I just got to know that I have thyroid. Cn you please help me to understand what I can eat and what can not.

MS - ENT,MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Kolkata
I am outlining  food you should avoid or restrict in Hypothyroidism. It's important  you maintain  your body weight exercise regularly. Weight gain increases thyroid hormone requirements. Avoid cruciferous   group of veggies  like cabbage and broccoli. Avoid soya bean in all forms. No soya, nugget, chunk, tofu or milk. Limit their intake: Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, turnips, and bok choy. Cooking the vegetables can reduce the effect that cruciferous vegetables have on the thyroid gland. Limiting your intake to 5 ounces a day appears to have no adverse effect on thyroid function. Decrease gluten  intake from processed  food. Always try whole grain varieties of cereals which is rich in fibres and help improve  bowels (Take your thyroid replacement  medicine several hours before or several hours after food rich in fibres. Otherwise problem  with absorption  of hormone. 20 to 35 gram of fibres daily from all sources. Avoid excessive fatty (deep fried) and sugary food as hypothyroidism  causes your metabolism  to slow down &weight gain. Avoid highly salted food, chips, pickles, sauces as they Contain  large amount of sodium. Hypothyroidism  puts you at risk of high BP and excess sodium in salt aggravates Coffee  in excess. And coffee with thyroid hormone  replacement  can prevent absorption. Alcohol. It is toxic to thyroid gland and prevents  hormone production and absorption. Hope this helps

Fasting blood sugar more than 126mg% means you have confirmed diabetes - since you are not on any medication probably you are aware of the fact-continue nutritional balanced diet and exercise. Get your hba1c done every 4 monthly and try to maintain below 5.7%

Mr. Lybrate-user, hypothyroidism is a thyroxine deficiency disorder, hence replacement of the hormone has to continue for life time. There is no cure. Dose has to be decided on the basis of body weight, t4 and tsh levels at the time of diagnosis.

Dear lybrate-user, I understand your worries. Your requirements for medicine is a bit higher for your age and duration of diabetes. Tired or exhausted pancreas unable to secrete insulin in optimum amount along with mental stress and physical inactivity may be contributing to such high sugars. You need to become physically very active, regular with healthy food habits and if possible learn some kind of stress management techniques like aol i. E art of living or vipassana. Also follow up with diabetologist regularly with self monitoring of blood glucose (smbg). If required your doctor may advise insulin for a period. Hope this helps you!

Your fasting levels are still to high and need to be brought under control. Your medicine for diabetes is either not effective/ or your dosage needs to be changed. Please consult a endocrinologist to control your fasting sugar levels. What are your hbaic levels? your cholesterol is also on the borderline high range. Please get a complete lipid profile done and share the results.

Archanaji, Thanks for the query. If one is on treatment for hypothyroidism and if the thyroxine dose is adequate, then TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L to be free from any symptoms in a non pregnant woman. However, if conception is desired then TSH should be maintained <2 mU/L. Later during first trimester it should be 0.1 to 2.5 mU/L, 2nd trimester :0.3 to 3 U/L & 3rd trimester 0.3 to 3.1 mU/L. So present dose has to be increased by 25 mcg per day. Then check TSH after 6 weeks to see if desired level is reached. Thanks.

Mr. Lybrate-user, by saying thyroid 15.04 are you referring to tsh level? if so it is very high. On treatment it should be around 3 to 4 milli units. As for vitamin d, best source is to get exposed to early morning sun. There are vitamin d3 supplements available, they can be used. More importantly your hypothyroidism needs to be checked properly. Thanks for the question.
