Hi, I am suffering from memory loss. I am not able to keep memorizing things. Even I forget so ordinary things like what I had taken in today's breakfast, how many marks I got in today's exam or what teacher said to me. I am a M. SC student so you can understand how much harmful is this for me. Please tell me how to get rid it completely as soon as possible. Thanks.

MD, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Hi lybrate-user I can understand how difficult it must me when you are facing such problems. What I think is that this issue of memory loss could be because of preoccupation of your mind with something else. If you are stressed due to something or under too much pressure this could be a reason for that. Sometimes our coping mechanisms aren't adequate to deal with the situation so in this case few counselling sessions would help and if required few medications, as this stress is due to imbalance of chemical in our brain hence medications would help in restoring the balance of those chemicals. Hope you find this answer useful.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Memory and mind power depends on three aspects. Understanding, retention and recollection. Recollection is easy if your retention is proper and flawless. Retention is possible when you are able understand what you read or learn. To understand you should have concentration. Concentration comes from effective learning techniques based on creative and active learning. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. I suggest online education counseling. Take care.

Im an accountant have so much of stress while doing my work how I can reduce my stress at that time help me please.
Kindly check with yourself whether this stress is work related or is it that your personal issues are bothering you while working. If there is something personal, get that sorted out first. If it is only work related stress, try to work smartly. Take help of technology to finish more work in lesser time. Also please check with yourself: 1. Are you or are you not enjoying your work? - if you find your job/work boring, then you might find it more stressful. 2, think, how important is this job for you? is it possible for your to find other job alternatives. 3. Are you satisfied with the money that you are earning? 4. Try to discuss/share your concerns with your friends/colleagues 5. Have your meals on time. 6. Have some daily exercise routine/yoga to destress yourself.

Dear lybrate user, having a dream/goal is the first step towards success. Have a realistic goal. Then make a detailed systematic plan that will take you towards your goal. Take one small step at a time and set small targets, to start with. Pat your back once you achieve these small targets. Write down your dreams and your plan of action on a paper and stick at a place where you can see it daily. Find out the reasons for demotivation. Kindly remember that, there will be setbacks. Take these setbacks as challenges and try to find the best possible solutions. If you get bored, take a break, relax your body and mind. Then again start working towards your dream with double efforts. Please remember -" courage is the ability to continue, when you feel like quitting and choosing to smile when you feel like crying" have the courage, have faith in yourself, work harder and be consistent. Wish you good luck.

It appears likely that you may be in the wrong profession or career. If you are not showing the interest in a particular job and not growing either, then it is quite suggestive of your being in a field that does not match your aptitude. You must meet with a career guidance counselor and do the tests for aptitude and career guidance and determine what you are actually made for. These counselors may not be willing to do a test at this late time in your life but do request them and they will if you put sufficient pressure. When this has been done you can see with the counselor’s help how to incorporate your aptitude with the current job that you are doing and make a suitable ‘adjustment’ so that various lose strings can be drawn together and a suitable job opening with your present qualification can be accommodated. Introspection is good if you are focused on a particular idea for development. If not, it will serve no purpose other than extending your problems to overwhelming levels.

Our is a love marriage and we have a healthy relationship for past 12 years. But for the past few months there has been some problems in our relationship that is what I feel. My wife had taken a break from her work for the last 3 years and now she has again started working and is very ambitious about her career. I too am supportive for the same. Currently she is away for 3 months for a training and whenever we meet we spend good time throughout the day but have arguments or fights on any small thing. I am unable to understand that whether she is into relationship with some other person. As we have also spoken on this too as she has a friend who is overseas and he keeps on calling her and they speak to each other for hours that is what I have found out. When I have discussed with her she says that he is just a very good friend of her. I do not know how to tackle this situation or is that I am doubting on her. I do not want to lose her and also do not want our relationship to get affected. Please advice.

Ph. D - Psychology, Professional Certified Coach
Psychologist, Ahmedabad
Dear friend, you sound stressed and very concerned. As you are happily married for 12 years now I am sure you have understood that love is not just a feeling, it's a verb - an action word. This is the time in your relationship that you really love her and show your love towards her in your actions. I am sure you have that in you and you would be able to focus on it once you are clear about what needs to be done. When we are stressed doubtful or ambiguous it shows in our tone our body language and in our energy. So first of all change the energy within you. Replace what you have with love care and understanding. She has started working after 3 years break and also she us away. This might be a stressful time for her. She might have one or other kind of fear about how will you respond if she talks with you about her struggles. That could be the reason for her to turn to a friend for guidance and support. Or there could be any such reason for her current behavior. When you two are togather next time, tell her genuinely that yiu really want to understand how she feels and what are her struggles. You want to be there for her in her time of need. And listen deeply to what she says. And when you listen deeply there is no judgement there is no right or wrong. Just understanding thing as it is. Ask her how could you support her. What she needs from you? she may want to hear that everything will be okay. Even the strong individual's needs to listen this sometimes. In nut she'll be there for her and love her. If you would like to discuss specific situation and your response to it and if yiu are open for online consultation feel free to contact me. My ph. D. Is in marriage and relationship counselling and it's my passion. Hope this helps wishing you very best.

General Physician,
Your smoking habit cannot be detected by X ray if yu smoke only a few. Best age to stop smoking is before 40 ,In fact do not start all Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs/ weed, avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40.

My brother is 36. He is depressed since childhood as our father is an alcoholic. He is not willing to see any doctor or psychologist for the unhappiness and anger that he carries. Is there a way that I can help him without his knowing of it.

Speak to him about your father, raise the topic so that he starts talking about it. This will facilitate ventilation of suppressed anger and improve his condition. But you must not raise the topic, talk for couple of minutes and leave. That will leave him angry and irritable without beneficial effects. You need to carry the discussion for 30-40 minutes on each instance. Many such instances may be needed. The end of a typical session is signalled when the intensity of his outburst has significantly reduced. Initially he may be resistant, but gradually he will improve. Take care!

Hello , an obsession is a repetitive and senseless thought which arises automatically in your mind and causes anxiety. (for eg:-something wrong will happen with you). To get relief from this anxiety, people do some action which they can't resist, this is called as compulsion (for eg:- spitting whenever such a thought comes in your mind) your symptoms are suggestive of ocd. It is quite common (2% in general population). Depression is quite common in patients of ocd and requires to be taken into consideration. There are effective treatments for the same. They include cognitive behaviour therapy as well as medicines. Consult privately for more help. Take care.

You may be under some stress, and I do not know if you are aware of it. Find out what this disturbance is all about and as you address it, memory and concentration will happily return to favor you. Do meet with a counselor, if your stress is too much. In the meantime please follow the suggested guidelines: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or calisthenics exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night?s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil or coconut oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. But you must have short term memory to convert it into long-term memory. So the emphasis must be in activating good short term memory, ideally and always. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that you and the family go for counseling too.

Causes and Diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome

FIPS, PGDMLS, DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Causes and Diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome

Asperger's syndrome has been found to affect people at a tender age. The augmented impacts of this syndrome are felt as you grow up. It is a neurological disorder falling under the scope of Autistic Spectrum Disorders. However, it is a milder form of autism and has similarly unidentifiable causes. A person afflicted with Asperger's syndrome will not exhibit stark signs of the disorder. These persons are usually smart and brilliant but face issues in communicating or interacting socially.

Factors that may result in this disorder

  • Genetic factors could also afflict you with such a syndrome. Thus, it is important to carry your family history while consulting a doctor.
  • Certain changes in a person's brain could create trouble.
  • Your body could be susceptible to external toxins: many times bacteria and viruses from a polluted environment can lead you to such a serious neurological condition.

Ways to diagnose Asperger's syndrome

  1. A doctor would concentrate on your child's speech: Language development can hint at many underlying health issues. Your child might fail to process speech around him or her which impairs its own speech.
  2. Exchanges in a social setup could be indicative of something: Children or adults could find social
  3. gatherings challenging. They feel awkward to interact with friends, relatives and colleagues. It takes a lot of effort on their part to exchange basic pleasantries. A doctor will be able to deduce from such symptoms.
  4. Facial expressions while conversing could help diagnosis: A person's facial expressions tell a lot about how they formulate or feel about things. Their words, at the same time, could be contrary. Counselors lay stress on frequent sittings to closely note the gestures made by a patient.
  5. Comprehension and coordination capabilities: Your child or loved one might find it difficult to handle motor regulated appliances. Comprehending instructions could also be a test. People suffering from Asperger's syndrome face problems in understanding simple things.
  6. Responding to change will also be taken into consideration: Patients trying to cope with this syndrome are usually not open to change. They take a very long time to adapt to a given way of life; a sudden change will thwart their idea of normalcy.
