I have recently started smoking I had never done this before and in my group no one smokes I don't no how dis urge arose to smoke plzzz help out coz the quantity is increasing day by day.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Best age to stop smoking is before 40 ,In fact do not start all Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs/ weed, avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40 31st May is “World No Tobacco Day” Quitting smoking before the age of 40 is associated with larger decline in premature death than stopping it at a later date. Best age therefore to stop smoking is before 40. However, stopping smoking even after the age of 50 is still associated with lower risk of death as compared to those who continue to smoke. Even in smokers aged 80 years or more, quitting smoking appears to reduce some mortality.

Hello lybrate-user, sorry that your mother is struggling with anxiety and depression. Kindly give her plenty of fresh fruit juices. High carbohydrate good is said to increase serotonin levels to fix mood. Try spinach, sunflower seeds and dried herbs in her diet. If you eat non-veg then white meat can also be beneficial and included in the diet plan. Let me know if you need more further help on this. Hope your mother feels better. Regards.

What are the basic steps to overcome depression specially for children ages 17-18 years old, in relation to their studies.

Hypnotherapist, DCS, BSIC, Advanced Trainee of Transactional Analysis, Advanced Skills in Counselling
Psychologist,
Children tend to get depressed because they want to achieve high marks. These targets are often set by the schools and parents. Are these marks in line with your child's abilities and interests? If they are comparing them selves with their peers, then this is also a trap for them to feel depressed about their performance. Helping your child to be realistic and also think beyond the rat race and competitive mentality will help to ease off some pressure. Remember, that sound mental and emotional health is very important, without which your child will not be happy in his life even if he's in a well earning job. Help your child to think out of the box and look at different options and combinations. Also take him for an aptitude and psychometric test which will identify his academics core strengths and guide him to overcome his depression too.

Vitamins are essential nutrients that regulate metabolic functions throughout your body, there are many type of vit. Like a, b, c, d, k. And proteins are essential for the growth, development, structure and function of cells, tissues, like bone, hairs, nails growth. Vitamins are found in all food, fruit, vegitable while protien found in particularly animal products, such as meat and milk, yoghurt, beans, pulses, fish, cordliver oil. And if you are suffring from weak memory, it may be due to alzheimer's disease which is common in old age group, for better treatment I suggest you to go to homoeopathic treatment, and do some yoga and meditation.

Best option is to see a psychologist who is specialist in conducting interest and aptitude tests. Based on the reports, you will be given vocational guidance and career counselling regarding what are the best available options for you. Interest testing will tell which are your fields of interest while aptitude testing will test whether you have ability to succeed in areas of your interest.

Im feeling lots of tension and thinking about same thing so how to get rid of that.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Im feeling lots of tension and thinking about same thing so how to get rid of that.
Meditation and yoga will help you. TRy the tension relieving methods like To be a safe and predictable person for those around you at work and at home, it is essential that you are able to maintain your composure when you feel like your 'buttons' are being pushed. This strength will help you to achieve your goals in business as well as your goals for your personal relationships. 1. Share negative emotions only in person or on the phone. E-mails, answering machine messages, and notes are too impersonal for the delicate nature of negative words. What feels like a bomb on paper may feel like a feather when delivered in person. 2. Pepper your responses with the phrase, "I understand" This phrase will support your goals when the tension is high and you need to find common ground to form compromises or agreements with the other party. 3. Take notice when you feel threatened by what someone is saying to you. Resist the temptation to defend yourself or to "shut down" the other person's communication. It will take this kind of discipline to become an open, trusting communicator. 4. Practice making requests of others when you are angry. It is often much more useful to make a request than to share your anger. For example, if the babysitter is driving you crazy by leaving dirty dishes in the sink, it is better to make a request of them than to let your anger leak out in other ways such as by becoming more distant. 5. Try repeating the exact words that someone is saying to you when they are in a lot of emotional pain or when you disagree with them completely. This mirroring technique can keep both the speaker and the listener 'can notered' in a difficult conversation, especially when the attitude of the person doing the mirroring is to gain understanding of a different point of view. 6. Take responsibility for your feelings to avoid blaming others. Notice when 'blame shifting' begins to leak into your speech. "I feel angry when you are twenty minutes late and you don't call me" is much better than, "You make me so mad by being late. 7. Learn to listen to the two sides of the conflict that you are in as if you were the mediator or the counsellor. If you can listen and respond in this way you will bring peace and solutions to the conflict more quickly. For example, in response to an employee's raise request, you might say, "On the one hand I understand that you really need the raise, and on the other hand I represent the company, whose funds are very scarce at this time. Is there a way that I can work on your compensation package that does not involve cash? Here, the mediator's point of view can look for the creative compromise that takes into account the limits and the needs of both parties. 8. Take a playful attitude towards developing the skill of emotional self-control in high conflict situations. You could view maintaining self-control in a tense, angry conversation as an athletic feat. You could also view developing this skill as similar to working out at the gym with weights - the more that you use your self-control muscle the bigger it will grow and the easier it will be to remain calm when tension is great. 9. Wait a few days to cool down emotionally when a situation makes you feel wild with intense feelings, such as rage. As time passes, you will be able to be more objective about the issues and to sort out the truth about the situation more clearly. 10. Make a decision to speak with decorum whenever you are angry or frustrated. If you give yourself permission to blow up, people will not feel safe around you. They will feel that you are not predictable and will carry 'shields' when they are near you. The fear and walls of others will not support your goals for success in relationships or at work.

Sir how can I leave alcohol. Please suggest me?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist,
If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least three years to completely get rid of the habit. If this is also not enough, then admit yourself into a de-addiction center and stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the drinking just to ease the initial craving. Ultimately, it is your will power and the support that you receive from the medical fraternity and your close and dear ones. You must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called? cross addictions? i. E. Another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as the primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide you on several measures and precautions you will need to take to stay with your resolve. Even after the rehabilitation you must attend aa meetings and continue this support for a long time. Your family will also need to attend some sessions and go for al-anon meetings for their co-dependency issues. You cannot be treated in isolation because the family has gotten used to your drinking and have made some unhealthy adaptations to somehow cope. Your children will also have to attend meetings to work out their issues because of the father? s habit. In fact, they are all suffering from the adult children of alcoholics syndrome (acoas), which in effect means that they are genetically predisposed to alcoholism or can have cross addiction problems and they will have similar traits of the abusing alcoholic but in a milder form. There are special support groups for them all over the world. Should they touch or indulge in alcohol or any addictive substances or behaviors, they could also become full-fledged addicts themselves. They will need the family? s written consent before willing to take him in this manner. Make a serious plan with the wife and children and whoever else? s support you can get and act on it fast.

Or what even I am not able to understand pls help.

It needs to be evaluated whether it was failure at your exams that made you go anxious and" out of control" or was it the other way round. Stress, anxiety and emotional turmoil can adversely affect performance particularly where your exceptions are soaring high. A balance has to be meet between your efforts, levels of stress and anxiety and having reasonable and achievable goals in life. If you feel that you have been facing anxiety and unable to work it out on your own you should not hesitate to seek help from a psychiatrist. Counselling and medication (if needed) may help resolve most of your problems.

Ayurvedic herbs used for bipolar disorder are adaptogenic in nature. They are equally valuable for mania or depression. The intent is not to force the brain out of a depressive or a manic episode by providing herbal uppers or downers but to balance the doshas and to normalize the production of neurotransmitters.

My father is drinking alcohol continuously and takes gutkha. Also gets tensioned and anger. He's takes sugar and pressure tablets regularly. How to cure my father? Please give any solution.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
Alcohol dependence is associated with significant physical, mental and social problems. Physically, there can be liver failure, jaundice, vomiting of blood, passing blood in stools, stomach ulcers, damage to nerves of the body, swelling of legs, fluid collection in abdomen, and many more. Mentally, there is irreversible brain damage, worsening of anxiety or depression, triggering of psychosis and mood disorders, dementia, etc. From a social point of view, there may be isolation from neighbors or family, increased abusive behavior to children or spouses, legal problems, accidents, etc. Anti craving medications are available which will help to reduce the craving. Consult a psychiatrist with experience in deaddiction. Also focus on his blood pressure and sugar. Ensure all medication is taken as prescribed.
