Are You Suffering From Eye Allergy?

Are You Suffering From Eye Allergy?

An eye allergy or allergic conjunctivitis is a condition that strikes when certain substances irritate the eyes, which can cause a reaction. This reaction has varied symptoms starting from inflammation to watering and even redness and an itching sensation.

So how can you tell if you have an eye allergy? This article will tell you all you need to know!

  • Causes: To begin with, this is an immune response that happens when the eye comes in contact with substances like dirt, grime, pollutants, pollen, nettle, pet hair, smoke, mold and more, which may cause irritation. These are typically known as allergens. The immune system takes these allergens to be invaders and begins attacking the same by releasing chemicals that cause these allergic reactions. Also, an eye allergy may be a symptom or outcome of other conditions like asthma, hay fever, or even eczema.
  • Symptoms: The eye usually bears a pink or red appearance when the patient is suffering from an eye allergy. Also, watery eyes are a common sight during this condition while scaling around the eyes may also take place. Further, itching and burning sensation may be felt by the patient and swelling or puffiness can be seen. The symptoms may afflict one or both eyes. The patient may also have a runny nose or stuffy nose as well as nasal congestion.
  • Difference between Eye Allergy and Pink Eye: Conjunctivitis or pink eye is usually caused due to bacteria or a virus that spreads infection in the eye. But eye allergy is caused due to a response of the immune system that leads to an allergic reaction. While the pink eye may be a contagious condition, an eye allergy is not.
  • Diagnosis: The diagnosis of an eye allergy will be done with the help of various tests conducted by an ophthalmologist. The skin prick test will help in introducing allergens to find out if the spot gets raised or suffers from inflammation. Also, the doctor will check for other ailments like asthma and eczema.
  • Treatment: There are varied methods of treating this condition. To begin with, the doctor may prescribe medication like decongestants and antihistamines as well as steroids for more severe and persistent cases. Also, injections may be prescribed in order to do away with the allergic reaction and eye drops containing olopatadine hydrochloride may also be used.
  • Home Remedies: Staying away from allergens and using a warm and clean washcloth over the eyes, for a few minutes every day, may help in relieving the painful symptoms of the condition.

Do not forget to consult your doctor before you try any natural or home based remedies.

Dear lybrate-user, Vitamin D has to be supplemented by medication, as it is a sunshine Vitamin. Vitamin D fortified oils, cereals, mushroom, fish, cod liver oil soft gels can be included in the diet. If you are a vegetarian, then Vit B 12 also should be supplemented. If you are a non vegetarian, then include 30g of liver of chicken or mutton twice a week only. Warm Regards,

It is natural for a man to feel erection when he is sexually aroused. The muscles, nerves, hormones and blood vessels all work together and maintain an erection. Initially get your blood sugar tested in a reputed pathology / clinical laboratory at fasting, 2 hours after morning principal meal and before dinner, if possible hb a1c test then meet a good consultant physician or a diabetologist for further management, advice, follow up, monitoring and review as advised by doctor. What medications are best for the treatment of asthma? What are their side effects.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
What medications are best for the treatment of asthma? What are their side effects.
These can include: short-acting beta agonists, such as albuterol. These medications are the same medications as those in your quick-acting (rescue) inhaler. You may need to use a machine called a nebulizer, which turns the medication into a mist that can be inhaled deep into your lungs. Oral corticosteroids. Taken in pill form, these medications help reduce lung inflammation and get your asthma symptoms under control. For more-severe asthma attacks, corticosteroids can be given intravenously. Ipratropium (atrovent). Ipratropium is sometimes used as a bronchodilator to treat a severe asthma attack, especially if albuterol is not fully effective. Intubation, mechanical ventilation and oxygen. If your asthma attack is life-threatening, your doctor may put a breathing tube down your throat into your upper airway. Using a machine that pumps oxygen into your lungs will help you breathe while your doctor gives you medications to get your asthma under control.

My husband is suffering from diabetics for the last four months what food he will take and fruit please advice.

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - have small frequent meals. Do not fast for more than 2-3 hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar. Fruits should be had as a mid meal. Avoid junk foods. Exercise and stay active. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.

Two years back one night in the middle of sleep, I felt as if I was having a heart attack or stroke and was very much scared. Went to doctor next morning, doctor said I am perfectly fine and did not even give any medicines too. But from then on I have different symptoms which mimic heart problems or nerve problems or something in the brain and dizziness etc. Was ordered few tests and everything was normal so doctor said I have anxiety and prescribed serta 25 mg. With or without it I feel normal for 2-3 months or have anxiety for several days. I am so fed up. I am going for so many blood tests every 3-4 months just to make sure nothing is actually wrong with me. Now I even forget taking serta for days together. Can I use it as and when needed or should I use it daily. Also I feel the same with r without it.
