I have real problem with my concentration. I can't remember what I read nd not able do better in exams. What should I do get my concentration?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
The proverbial exam fever is capable of causing a lot of stress. Stress is not a good indicator for studies. Because of your age you may have hormonal imbalances which may impact your memory because of the chemical but also the distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too.

Homeopathy and Depression

Homeopathy and Depression

Most people have felt depressed in their lives some time or the other. Depression can be a natural reaction to failure, injured self-esteem or loss but when the severity of the condition increases it is diagnosed as 'clinical' or 'major'. Subtle signs of depression usually go unnoticed because it is difficult to determine whether it is a phase or a chronic condition. It is important to recognize the symptoms of depression and get help at the earliest.

Some major symptoms are consistent sadness, feeling hopeless, thoughts of suicide, uninterested in life, low on energy, a persistent physical trauma that does not respond to medications.

Homeopathic Treatment

There are efficient homeopathic medicines that can work to reduce the illness, especially if treated in the early stages. Homeopathy is a reliable path to follow because it does not have any side effects, unlike antidepressants that tend to numb people. Here is a comprehensive list of homeopathic medicines which most doctors are likely to recommend for treating depression.

  • Arsenicum album - This medicine is prescribed to control the symptoms like diarrhea, gastric problems, indigestion which patients often suffer from as a result of intense anxiety. Patients, appropriate for this medicine tend to be fastidious and restless. It is made of white arsenic and should be taken in prescribed potency because an overdose can cause gastroenteritis.
  • Natrum muriaticum - This homeopathic treatment is useful for mild depression or for people suffering extreme bereavement due to loss or a sudden shock.
  • Sepia - This medicine is beneficial to women suffering from postpartum depression (sadness or emotional confliction after giving birth) and menopause. Feeling of solitude and hopelessness with no energy to continue with life are some common symptoms that can be reduced with Sepia.

Psychologist,
Depression, stress and anxiety has a direct affect on sexual arousal and performance. A psychiatrist can suggest you the medication for dealing with depression. Besides medication, thought management is an important aspect which is very useful to manage and cope with depression. When your depression reduces and the stress levels come down, you will see an up in your sexual arousal too. Some key guidelines: do exercise, as it releases the same chemicals like dopamine and serotonin which a psychiatrist will give you for depression. Exercising is a natural way to keep depression at bay. 2. Eat healthy: stay away from junk, sweets, maida, fried foods. Eat whole grains, complex carbs, food supplying fatty acids, greens and fruits. 3. Sleep well for 7-8 hours everyday: this detoxifies and rejuvenates the mind and body naturally and reduces stress, tension and worry. 4. Stop thinking too much and worrying: there are something's that are within your control to change and improve. There are some things that you cannot change because they are outside your control for eg weather. Learn to differentiate these things and focus your attention on what you can change positively. Also, treat life with less seriousness. Add humour to your life. Meet people who are friendly, lighthearted, problem solvers and progressive thinkers. Indulging in a hobby or two once or twice a week, takes away the pain and suffering of everyday living, if you don't like what you do and whom you interact with. 5. Attitude of gratitude: each day count your blessings and see how fortunate you are and what you have in life, rather than what you don't have in your life. This will help you to feel happier, content and satisfied with what is working in life and take your mind away from what is not working in your life. Dear, you must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. Please post a private question to me and I will help you with" effective learning" techniques. Take care.

Not everyone who worries a lot has an anxiety disorder. You may be anxious because of an overly demanding schedule, lack of exercise or sleep, pressure at home or work, or even from too much coffee. The bottom line is that if your lifestyle is unhealthy and stressful, you’re more likely to feel anxious—whether or not you actually have an anxiety disorder. So if you feel like you worry too much, take some time to evaluate how well you’re caring for yourself. Do you make time each day for relaxation and fun? Are you getting the emotional support you need? Are you taking care of your body? Are you overloaded with responsibilities? Do you ask for help when you need it? If your stress levels are through the roof, think about how you can bring your life back into balance. There may be responsibilities you can give up, turn down, or delegate to others. If you’re feeling isolated or unsupported, find someone you trust to confide in. Just talking about your worries can make them seem less frightening. Take care of yourself Connect with others. Loneliness and isolation set the stage for anxiety. Decrease your vulnerability by reaching out to others. Make it a point to see friends, join a self-help or support group, or share your worries and concerns with a trusted loved one. Practice relaxation techniques. When practiced regularly, relaxation techniques such as mindfulness meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and deep breathing can reduce anxiety symptoms and increase feelings of relaxation and emotional well-being. Exercise regularly. Exercise is a natural stress buster and anxiety reliever. To achieve the maximum benefit, aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise on most days. Get enough sleep. A lack of sleep can exacerbate anxious thoughts and feelings, so try to get seven to nine hours of quality sleep a night. If you struggle with sleep, adopting smart sleep habits can make a big difference. Be smart about caffeine and alcohol. If you struggle with anxiety, you may want to consider reducing your caffeine intake or cutting it out completely. Same with alcohol, which can make anxiety worse. Train your brain to stay calm. Worrying is a mental habit you can learn how to break. Strategies such as creating a worry period, challenging anxious thoughts, and learning to accept uncertainty can significantly reduce anxiety and fear.

lybrate-user, medicine is a very important part of recovery. Talk to your doctor and express all the concerns you have. He may change the medicine and/or dose of it. Talk to therapist and learn the behavioural and cognitive skills to tackle the depression. Developing insight and learning recovery activities is very important. Medicine, therapy and recovery activities will help to bring the desirable change. Take care.

Dearlybrate-user, in many ways, introversion is blessing. Introversion is creativity. Introversion boosts creativity and you, being alone and not liking to visit friends etc is blessing in that way. You have potential and utilize it positively. This behavior is never a sign of aging. Take care.

I always get irritated and frustrated without any reason on others how can I overcome that.
Dear, anger and aggression are emotions. Anger comes when you become irritated. Irritation happens when you don't like something, or when something is repeated. As anger is an emotion, it should be vent out. You should be able to throw anger out instead of controlling it. But more perfect will be, know the frustrating situations and stop being emotional. If practiced properly, you will not get irritated at those circumstances at all. Those techniques are much easier to understand. For further assistance you can concern me privately.

My brother is having a stammering problem from his childhood. Now,he is 25 years old and is a doctor. But that problem is not gone. We have shown him to the ENT doctors and they have concluded that there is no defect in his throat. That problem has taken a mental illness and he is under total depression and not ready to do further studies and always remains in angry mood. We have also shown him to the speech therapists but it is of no use for his problem. How can his problem be tackled efficiently and effectively?

M.Phil clinical psychology
Psychologist, Gurgaon
Stammering could have neurological, medical or psychological causal factors. Consult a neurologist first and get all investigations if it is a neurological problem. Sometimes, due to anxiety also people have trouble like this and stammering is the result. For psychological reason, consult a clinical psychologist who may use behavior therapy principles in its treatment management. Lastly, I would also like to tell you sometimes due to such problems, people develop depression and stress as they have difficulty in normal conversation and they feel frustrated. So dealing with frustration is also important point to be kept in mind in their treatment option.

Dear lybrate-user, if you are better with nexito forte, why do you want to stop. With the symptoms your quality of life will be less and your career may be affected. So I would advise you to continue the drug and consult your doctor again. If the doctor offers some form of talk therapy like cbt (cognitive behaviour therapy), probably you may be able to stop drugs without getting back symptoms. But cbt itself may take many session and will go on for 5-6 months weekly sessions. Both nexito and cbt will reduce your symptoms and you can plan for better career. By themselves it will not affect your career. Masturbation will not lower serotonin level or insomnia. But guilt of masturbation can cause. So you should get rid of guilt. Again nexito and cbt will help in getting rid of guilt.
