Dark Circles

MBBS, DDV
Dermatologist, Mumbai
Dark Circles

Are you sick of people always telling you that you look exhausted. You get enough sleep and you drink lots of water but those dark circles still cause stares and make you look much older than you really are.

Dark circles is one of the major concerns for women seeking treatment for cosmetic reasons.

What are the reasons for dark circles?

It’s a combination of heredity and genetics, fatigue and dehydration, but most likely the culprit causing chronic dark circles is excess skin pigmentation which happens because of ethnic variation for Indian population.

Sun exposure increases the chances of dark circles.

Also, dark circles are related to dilated blood vessels and aging – which causes skin to thin and can darken the area. Unfortunately, to erase them completely is not possible. However, you can minimize their effects by knowing their causes, finding good solutions and choosing the right products.

How to treat them?

1) Protection: Use an SPF 30 sunscreen daily. A moisturizer as a base and a concealer can also be used to cover up as a protective layer ( camouflage + protection)

2) Diet changes: If you have puffy eye bags along with dark circles then reducing salt intake can help in reducing the puffiness.

3) Don't rub the eyes, as rubbing makes it darker

4) Use of eye brightening serums every night will help in reducing the lines around the eyes and eventually helps in fading the dark circles

5) A dermatologist's consultation and under eye treatments available at the dermatologist clinic should be considered if everything else fails.

I am 23 years old and my hairs are started to loss from last 1 month what should I do now?

I am 23 years old and my hairs are started to loss from last 1 month what should I do now?
Hi. Let me tell you about hairfall. In layman's language, hairfall can be divided into 2 types - temporary hairfall and permanent which is called 'Hairloss' rather and leads to bald areas of smooth and shiny surface. In temporary hairfall, hair grows back again from the same hair root, but in case of permanent hairloss, because of formation of DHT (Di- Hydro -Testosterone) around hair root it gets choked up which subsequently affects the blood supply to the hair and thus hair root is lost forever. (There are different pattern of hairloss, because of different reasons like Alopecia Areata, Telogen Effluvium, Scarring Alopecia, Traction Alopecia, etc.) Many factors are responsible formation of this DHT or male/ female pattern baldness - hereditary, post-illness/ ailment, post-delivery, post- chemotherapy, nutritional deficiencies, hormaonal imbalance, insufficient sleep, sudden loss of weight, stress/ tensions/ excessive anger any other underlying diseases, etc. Take diet rich in protein like non-veg., eggs, pulses, legumes, sprouts, nuts (sp. walnut and almonds), iron-rich food like green vegetables, also take flaxseeds, green tea, soyabean, fruits, salads, etc. Take proper 6-9hrs of sound sleep. Give up the habit of smoking and excessive alcohol intake. Avoid junk food and any kind of beverages (tea, coffee, aerated drinks, cold drinks, etc.) Avoid canned/ tinned food or food that contains preservatives (eat fresh ones). Avoid use of harsh hair colour, hair treatment like rebonding, straightening, perming, etc. Avoid vigorous exercises or any supplements provided by the gym! Regular exercising is also one of the important point, but should be done under some good, qualified yoga teacher or instructor for proper guidance; it also releases the stress/ tension in the mind and the body and keeps you FIT and YOUNG!! Take homoeopathic Rx - Schwabe's Wiesbaden 200/ twice a day for 1 month and revert. Also, use Schwabe's Arnica shampoo and Hair Growth oil regularly as per the condition of your scalp (minimum 3 times a week). After shampooing, use Bakson's Arnica Hair conditioner as well after every head wash. Apart from this, take Follihair tablets (multivitamin) - 1 tab. daily once for 1 month. Use Rose wood hair comb to brush your hair. (N.B.: With the help of homoeopathic medicines, we can only prevent further progress of the hairloss, means it will get arrests in the present condition in case of progressive baldness. But, in case there are areas of baldness which has gone smooth and shiny, you will have to choose an option of Hair Transplant along with theses medications!).

Hello Lybrate User, Pimples can occur on the scalp just like it appears on the face and other parts of the body. Just like the rest of the body, the scalp has pores that secrete oil (sebum) to the surface of the scalp. When the bacteria already on the scalp combine with dead skin cells and sebum, the pores get blocked, leading to an outbreak of acne. Several factors contribute to scalp pimples, such as hormonal changes, an unhealthy diet, an allergic reaction, poor hygiene, living in humid conditions, pollution, exposure to certain chemicals and oils, and mechanical factors like wearing tight headgear or habitually scratching your scalp, stress, fatigue and depression can also contribute to this problem. Here is natural home remedy that will help you to get rid from scalp pimples - * Apple cider vinegar helps fight scalp acne. Its antibacterial and antiseptic properties help clear the hair follicles of bacteria and oil that cause acne. Plus, it restores the pH balance of the scalp to prevent further breakouts. * Mix apple cider vinegar with an equal amount of lukewarm water, and rinse your washed hair with this solution. Wait 5 to 7 minutes, then rinse your hair again with clean water. Do it every time you shampoo your hair. * Do not apply undiluted apple cider vinegar on your hair, as it can be too strong for your scalp. For better results consult me on lybrate privately. Take care.

Scalp Peeling - Did You Know It Can Be Of 3 Different Types?

Dermatologist
Dermatologist, Delhi
Scalp Peeling - Did You Know It Can Be Of 3 Different Types?

Eczema of the scalp, which results in itching, flaking, or crusting of the scalp, is called scalp peeling or is commonly referred to as “dandruff”. This condition causes increased shedding of normal scalp skin cells. Dandruff may also be caused by a fungal infection, other than just dehydration of the scalp.

The causes of an extremely dry scalp, thereby causing dandruff or even bigger flakes falling from the head onto shoulders and clothes, may be due to scalp psoriasis, eczema, poor nutrition, generalized dehydration, exposure to too much direct heat, and using too much of shampoo.

The three types of dandruff that need to be treated are those resulting from fungal growth, dry scalp and the one resulting from product build-up.

  1. Fungal growth: This kind of dandruff is a chronic condition, caused by increased oil content on the scalp or an off-balance pH of the scalp. It may also be due to poor cleansing habits, or even an allergic reaction to the hair products one uses. Try switching shampoos, conditioners, or styling products to sulfate-free formulas to cure this condition.
  2. Dry scalp: Sometimes, the skin of the scalp is literally so parched and dry that it is flaky and falls away like snakeskin. People with this kind of dandruff usually have drier hair and notice a tightness in their scalp. To treat dry-scalp dandruff, it is wise to indulge one’s hair with moisturizing and hydrating shampoos, cut down on or space out harsh chemical treatments like relaxers, permanents, or dyes, and take in more moisture from the inside - drink at least 8 eight-ounce glasses of water a day, and your skin (including your scalp) will show you results that you want. Eliminating sulfates from your shampoos or other hair care products will also help with dry scalp, since these ingredients help strip away natural oils. Brushing hair or massaging the scalp - either with bare fingertips or a few drops of oil - is another great treatment, since massage helps stimulate circulation and bring blood, nutrients, and oxygen to the scalp and hair.
  3. Product buildup: The most common type of dandruff is due to product buildup. This is what happens when people with otherwise healthy manes and scalps use too many styling products, such as layering gels, hair serum, hairspray, wrap lotions, scalp oils, heat-protecting serum, and so on. Dandruff caused by product buildup usually looks more like small clumps or balls of dirt. It may have a brownish color, since all those products attract and trap plenty of dirt and sweat. Product-buildup dandruff also tends to appear sporadically, only when hair is in need of a wash, whereas other types of dandruff show up more quickly and regularly.

To treat this kind of dandruff, one should wash hair more often or simply aim for using minimum chemical-rich hair products. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dermatologist.

Due to sun exposure, the colour of your exposed body skin gets darker as compared to the covered areas.Certain dietary modifications also helps in reducing sun tan..You should consume carrots.eggs, mangoes, cheese, spinach, tomatoes, apricot, plums and peaches, tender coconut, buttermilk. The food rich in antioxidants will add a natural glow to your skin and the free radicals available in these fight against the harmful sun rays. You may also go for peels and skin polishing to reduce tan. If you wd like to go for a more natural approach, you can try rubbing the slices of lemons, potato, tomatoes, cucumber which are also found to be beneficial in clearing the complexion. You may use suncross lotion in the morning.
