High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. Change life style .do meditation, yoga, Go walk daily, do any one physically activity daily i.e.play any game., Avoid fast foods, oily foods, junk foods, alcohol, smoking, fatty foods, non-veg.,avoid stress, take plenty of water in day time. And 1 glass of water before bed at night. use flax oil, omega-3 fatty meal or cap., take .green veg., whole grain. Garlic,. Cod liver oil. Take anti cholesterol medicines . Cap. Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It is good to see that both BP and blood glucose are fairly well controlled. Increase in microalbuminuria and creatinine suggests that kidney are getting affected mostly due to diabetes. One of the group of drugs recommended for hypertension with diabetes is ACE-Inhibitors like Lisinopril, Enalepri or ARBs like Losartan, Telmisartan or Olmesartan etc. Thanks.

I am diabetic and hypertensive. My morning blood sugar levels are being recorded high between 150-160 and 120 around 3 AM. I suspect it might be Dawn phenomenon or sneeze effect. How to get solve the problem? Please advise?

I am diabetic and hypertensive. My morning blood sugar levels are being recorded high between 150-160 and 120 around ...
Mr. M Ramprasad lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. The dawn phenomenon, sometimes called the dawn effect, is an early-morning (usually between 2 a.m. And 8 a.m.) increase in blood sugar (glucose) relevant to people with diabetes.[1] It is different from chronic Somogyi rebound in that dawn phenomenon is not associated with nocturnal hypoglycemia. From above explanation it must be clear to you that your problem is not Dawn effect. Sometimes if night dose is high (whether Insulin or oral drugs) there may be a lower level of glucose in the early morning leading to hypoglycemia. That too is not present. What may be needed is proper adjustment of night dose and food intake. Thanks.

High Blood Pressure - A Complete Guide!

Hypertension is commonly known as high blood pressure, a condition in which the heart pumps excessive blood which may eventually cause damage to the arteries. Hypertension generally develops over a prolonged period of time. Hypertension is calculated to be a blood pressure count above 140/90 (millimetres of mercury).

Hypertension is of two types:

  1. Primary hypertension: The cause of primary hypertension is not specific. It happens to develop over a period of time.
  2. Secondary hypertension: Secondary hypertension occurs due to an underlying health condition. This type of hypertension may develop all of a sudden. There are many causes of secondary hypertension

In some cases high blood pressure can develop during a pregnancy. If high blood pressure persists for over 20 weeks, it can cause severe complications. Untreated hypertension can result in premature delivery.

Signs you have hypertension
Hypertension generally does not have any specific symptom. Thus, it can remain undiagnosed for years. Some of the symptoms of hypertension are:

  1. Headaches
  2. Dizziness
  3. Nose bleeding
  4. Irregular heartbeat
  5. Tiredness and fatigue
  6. Breathing difficulty

Risks associated with hypertension

  1. Heart diseases
  2. Stroke
  3. Heart failure
  4. Vision loss
  5. Kidney damage
  6. Memory loss

How can it be treated?
Incorporating certain changes to your diet can help in combating the symptoms of hypertension. In a nutshell, a healthy way of living consisting of a well- balanced diet and regular exercises are the most basic ways of treating this condition. Some of the important lifestyle changes that can treat high blood pressure are:

  1. Restrict salt in your diet to a maximum limit of 5g a day.
  2. Limit alcohol consumption
  3. Lose weight by keeping a check on your diet and exercising regularly
  4. Manage your stress levels by using relaxation techniques to manage stress levels.
  5. Medications are also used to lower the blood pressure
    • Calcium-channel blockers
    • Vasodilators
    • Angiotensin receptor blockers

I am suffering from dry cough for last two weeks and whenever I cough hard my chest was paining.

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)
Endocrinologist, Delhi
I am suffering from dry cough for last two weeks and whenever I cough hard my chest was paining.
Chest pain that comes with cough or deep inspiration is an indication of the disease process pleuritis. Essentially in this condition we first prescribed antibiotics and antiallergics along with cough syrups to relieve the patient of cough which might be due to some infection. Hence I believe instead of letting this problem grow you should start taking medicines on the line that I have suggested and you'd be okay no time.
