Common causes and treatment for Leg Pain

Doctor Of Physical Therapy (DPT), Bachelor of Physical Therapy
Physiotherapist, Bangalore
Common causes and treatment for Leg Pain
Our body is made such that a balance is necessary. Too much or too little exercises can cause pain in muscles especially leg and back. Tight hamstrings and calf muscles can cause pain at the back of the leg. Also it could be due to back issues like disc and joint problems etc, where pain is referred to legs because of low back. When nerve is irritated, it can cause sharp leg pain as in sciatica. Sometimes leg pain is due to vein problem.

Simple ways to control leg pain.

Get up and stretch the leg muscles.
Learn strengthening exercises to build muscle strength.
Do moderate exercise and walk daily for 30 minutes.
Keep good posture when sitting for prolong periods.
Join a community yoga or stretching class.

Check with doctor immediately to find root cause, If pain persists for more than few days or you notice any numbness or tingling.

My father is 58 years old suffering from depression, for past 6-7 years & he is depressed due to my sister marriage. After treatment and medicines he become fit and fine. Later 1-2 year ago he becomes more active, aggressive and energetic than before, this behaviour remains for 1+ years. From last 5-6 months he again slowly gets into depression and becomes less active, does not talk much, keep tensed. Doctor prescribed half tablet of gatomir 15 (mirtazapine) at night and 1 tablet of zotral 50 (sertraline) at morning for 15 days. However 7+ days are past but he is not eating properly and we does not see much improvement. Can you please explain is it normal while taking anti depression medicines, and is this medicine is ok? Can we wait for some more time for improvement or we contact our doctor to change medicines?

Hi lybrate-user, He is not suffering from Depression any more its taken form of Mania. A manic episode is characterized by period of at least 1 week where an elevated, expansive or unusually irritable mood, as well as notably persistent goal-directed activity is present. The mood disturbance associated with manic symptoms should be observable by others (e. G. Friends or relatives of the individual) and must be uncharacteristic of the individual’s usual state/behavior. These feelings must be sufficiently severe to cause difficulty or impairment in occupational, social, educational or other important functioning. Symptoms also cannot be the result of substance use or abuse (e. G. Alcohol, drugs, medications) or caused by a general medical condition. Three or more of the following symptoms must be present: Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity Decreased need for sleep (e. G. One feels rested after only 3 hours of sleep) More talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking Flight of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing Attention is easily drawn to unimportant or irrelevant items Increase in goal-directed activity (either socially, at work or school, or sexually) or psychomotor agitation Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that have a high potential for painful consequences (e. G. Engaging in unrestrained buying sprees, sexual indiscretions, or foolish business investments). Now when the situation alters between episodes of depression and Mania it is called BIPOLAR MOOD DISORDER and it will need a fresh treatment. So I advise you to get the medication changed if it is not helping your father.

Dear, tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like nicotine replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. But still you will need will power. You may consult a physician or deaddiction therapist or a rehabilitation facility for further advise. Take care.

Can a person have multiple personality disorder like paranoia personality disorder and dependent personality disorder at the same time,

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Karaikal
Can a person have multiple personality disorder like paranoia personality disorder and dependent personality disorder...
Yes that can occur sometimes. Simultaneous presence of multiple Personality disorders (PDs) is a valid diagnosis, as per International Classification of Diseases and DSM manuals of psychiatric disorders registry. Such a person should be treated appropriately with psychotherapy and drugs as necessary. Usually such occasional multiple PDs occur from same cluster of PDs, eg. Dependent and anxious PDs from cluster C, narcissistic and borderline PDs from cluster B may co-exist. Comorbid Intercluster PDs eg. Paranoid PD (cluster A) with Depressive PD (cluster C) can also be seen in a same person. By the by PDs are the most common disease /disorder in humans, with about 1 in 3 (33%) expected to have 1 or more PDs causing distress to himself or his family members/loved ones, and liable to affect interpersonal relationships and net functional performance.

Hi, When you're feeling anxious or stressed, these strategies will help you cope: Take a time-out. Practice yoga, listen to music, meditate, get a massage, or learn relaxation techniques. Stepping back from the problem helps clear your head. Eat well-balanced meals. Do not skip any meals. Do keep healthful, energy-boosting snacks on hand. Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can aggravate anxiety and trigger panic attacks. Get enough sleep. When stressed, your body needs additional sleep and rest. Exercise daily to help you feel good and maintain your health. Check out the fitness tips below. Take deep breaths. Inhale and exhale slowly. Count to 10 slowly. Repeat, and count to 20 if necessary. Do your best. Instead of aiming for perfection, which isn't possible, be proud of however close you get. Accept that you cannot control everything. Put your stress in perspective: Is it really as bad as you think? Welcome humor. A good laugh goes a long way. Maintain a positive attitude. Make an effort to replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Get involved. Volunteer or find another way to be active in your community, which creates a support network and gives you a break from everyday stress. Learn what triggers your anxiety. Is it work, family, school, or something else you can identify? Write in a journal when you’re feeling stressed or anxious, and look for a pattern. Talk to someone. Tell friends and family you’re feeling overwhelmed, and let them know how they can help you. Talk to a physician or therapist for professional help. consult me for any query or if you want any help in dealing with stress.

I have been smoking weed (marijuana) from last 2 years, what are the effects of smoking weed? Can I stop smoking? How?

Masters in Clinical Psychology
Psychologist, Lucknow
These are the following effects of smoking weed: SHORT-TERM EFFECTS Sensory distortion Panic Anxiety Poor coordination of movement Lowered reaction time After an initial “up,” the user feels sleepy or depressed Increased heartbeat (and risk of heart attack) LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF MARIJUANA Reduced resistance to common illnesses (colds, bronchitis, etc.) Suppression of the immune system Growth disorders Increase of abnormally structured cells in the body Reduction of male sex hormones Rapid destruction of lung fibers and lesions (injuries) to the brain could be permanent Reduced sexual capacity Study difficulties: reduced ability to learn and retain information Apathy, drowsiness, lack of motivation Personality and mood changes If you want to get off weed, the first step is deciding to do so. Then take a few steps in the right direction. Change your habits. If you hang around with friends who smoke weed, find other people to do things with who aren’t using it. Build yourself up nutritionally. This will help with the withdrawal symptoms. Drugs rob the body of vitamins and minerals, particularly B complex, vitamin C and calcium and magnesium. Find some activities you like to do, maybe something you enjoyed before you started using. Get out and see the world you’ve been missing in the drug induced haze. There are withdrawal symptoms when a person stops smoking marijuana. Since they are not as dramatic as heroin withdrawal symptoms, some people think they do not exist. Some people experience irritability, sleeping difficulties, depression, night sweats and loss of appetite. Some also suffer anxiety and fatigue. Some people can overcome these symptoms and get through it on their own. Some can’t and need help. Even if they get off the drug for awhile, they go back to it as they are still faced with the same problems and difficulties that led them to using it in the first place. Seek professional help.
