I use cpap machine for snoring but after 3 to 4 hrs I wake up daily any remedy for continuous sleep will you suggest.

MBBS
General Physician, Trivandrum
1) maintain a regular sleep routine go to bed at the same time. Wake up at the same time. Ideally, your schedule will remain the same (+/- 20 minutes) every night of the week. A good sleep hygiene routine promotes healthy sleep and daytime alertness. 2) avoid sleeping during the daytime. It can disturb the normal pattern. 3) avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol near bedtime. While alcohol may speed the onset of sleep, it creates problems in he second half of sleep. 4) exercise can promote good sleep. Exercise should be taken in the morning or late afternoon. Yoga, can be done before bed to help. 5) have a quiet, comfortable bedroom. Set your bedroom thermostat at a comfortable temperature. Generally, a little cooler is better than a little warmer. Turn off the tv and other extraneous noise that may disrupt sleep. Background'white noise' like a fan is ok. If your pets awaken you, keep them outside the bedroom. Your bedroom should be dark. Turn off bright lights. Have a comfortable mattress. 6) avoid heavy meals close to bedtime. 7) ensure adequate exposure to natural light. 8) avoid emotionally upsetting conversations and activities before trying to go to sleep. Do not think of, or bring your problems to bed. 9) stop using all your digital devices and stop looking at digital screens be it mobile phones or televisions at least 1 hour before the time you plan to sleep. Instead try reading a fiction book near bedtime so it makes you help relaxed and de-stressed. Sleep well live healthy and live longer. If you have tried all these and still have problems, please consult me for prescription medication.

I m suffering from tonsil, since last 3 days and it goes increases day by day. What should I do.

BHMS
Homeopath, Raebareli
The best and the most common home remedy for tonsillitis is to gargle with warm salt water. The warm water will have a soothing effect and the salt will help kill the virus or bacteria. Plus, salt helps reduce inflammation, giving you instant relief. Mix one teaspoon of table salt in a cup of warm water. Gargle with the solution. Do not swallow it. Spit the water out after gargling. Repeat this as often as possible for speedy recovery.

Getting gargle sounds in my ear when I pinch my ear and also suffering heavy ear pain since 2 weeks .i have tinnitus since 2 years but it can't rid off I was used so many medicines.

Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), DNB (ENT)

Hi. Tinnitus since 2 years is long duration hence you need to get yourself personally examined by an ENT SPECIALIST. It might include battery of tests and investigations but frankly of there is no modifiable cause for tinnitus it won't subside hence to know whether it is modifiable or not you have to get yourself evaluated. Regards.

There is too much bleeding in my nose. It is happened at last three week, it will be bleed any time. I do not no that what I do. Give me some advice to stop it.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
Nasal bleeding is due to any abnormality in the nasal bone, high blood pressure, or repeated nose cleaning abruptly, if a person suffering from nasal obstruction with mild to moderate nasal allergies and on off nose bleeding than it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. Allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusiits. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopically.

I am suffering from cough and cold from last 3 days and now my ear is also blocked, I can't hear properly What would I do for my ear?

MBBS, MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Ahmedabad
It is likely that fluid of cold is collected behind your eardrum. You need to consult an ent surgeon at the earliest to treat it. Because early treatment increases chances of cure with medicines. Later you start treatment more the chance of a minor surgery to remove fluid behind eardrum. By the time you visit ent surgeon the antihistamines and decongestants for cough and cold. Take steam inhalation twice a day. Do not blow your nose forcefully.

BAMS

Hi, please follow these tips to stop snoring: - reduce your weight if you are obese. - perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - sleep on sides instead on back. - elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - clear the nose before going to bed. - establish regular sleep pattern. - keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in the nose and throat. - perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - anti snoring appliances can also be used.

How Can Nasal Obstruction Cause Clogged Ears?

MBBS, MS - ENT, DNB
ENT Specialist, Gurgaon
How Can Nasal Obstruction Cause Clogged Ears?

It is very common for patients with nasal obstruction to develop clogged ear as well. The back of the nose opens into a tunnel also known as the Eustachian tube. This tube goes up to the ear. In case the ears get clogged the pressure is released by popping of the ears. This is achieved by swallowing, yawning, and trying to blow the nose. When ear pops the tunnel opens and allows the pressure to release from the ear.

Reasons why nasal obstruction causes clogged ears:

  1. Mucosal Swelling: When the nose is obstructed, the nasal lining might swell thus making it difficult to breath. This might also lead to swelling in the tunnel of the ear causing it to shut down. Sometimes an ear pop does not happen in this condition and this is called as Eustachian tube dysfunction.
  2. Negative Pressure inside the Nose: In nose obstruction when the patient tries to breathe through the nose there is negative pressure. This might build up near the opening of the Eustachian tube or the back of the nose. This pressure gets transmitted to the ear and results in a negative pressure in the ear which leads to the clogging of the ear.
  3. Bernoulli's Principle: This principle states that in case of an inviscid flow, increase in speed of the fluid happens side by side with a pressure decrease.

Causes of Nasal Obstruction:

Obstruction or congestion of the nose leads to a stuffy and inflamed nose. In minor illnesses like fever, cold, sinus infection and flu stuffy nose can happen. This congestion might last for a week. In case the congestion is long term then the causes for it are:

  1. Allergies and hay fever
  2. Chemical and environmental irritants
  3. Septum deviation
  4. Chronic sinusitis that has lasted for too long
  5. Nasal polyps and benign tumors

Symptoms of nasal decongestion are runny or stuffy nose, painful sinus, and swollen nasal tissues along with mucus buildup.

Treatment for Nasal Decongestion:
Once the nasal congestion has been found and the cause behind it has been analyzed, then treatment is must. Treatment usually includes prescription medication or over the counter drugs. Medication of the nasal decongestion involves the following:

  1. Oral Antihistamines: These are helpful in treating allergies. Common ones are loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec)
  2. Nasal Sprays: Nasal sprays which contain antihistamine like azelastine (Astelin, Astepro)
  3. Nasal Steroids: Examples of this are mometasone (Asmanex Twisthaler) or fluticasone (Flovent Diskus, Flovent HFA)
  4. Antibiotics
  5. Over the counter or prescription decongestants

Hi Doctor, Pain in ear when using phone or on hearing loud sounds. No issue found in CT scan and audio metric test. Can wisdom tooth cause such pain? Are there any other tests that you can recommend me.

Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), DNB (ENT)

Yes, Ear pain can be due to wisdom teeth, but due to noise exposure the pain can be temporary not lasting long, hence cause of pain mostly due to wisdom tooth Still visit an ENT SPECIALIST and rule out the cause. Regards.
