This could b either due to sensitivity due to loss of enamel surface or due to decay of tooth. Tooth decay can b treated by filling of tooth or by rct n capping of the decay is deep. Sensitivity can b reduced by using desensitizing toothpaste such as senquelF or sensodyne toothpaste by rubbing some amount of toothpaste onto ur tooth surface n wait till 5 mins before rinsing it off. Helpful Tips for Dental Braces

Helpful Tips for Dental Braces

Getting braces is the best thing you can do for your teeth. Yes, the process is painful. And maintenance of braces can get too much, but it is not undoable!

When you have braces on teeth, those teeth need extra attention to protect them from decay, staining and gum disease. You should also take precautions to avoid damaging the braces. For example, activities to avoid include eating chewy or sticky sweets, eating hard or crunchy foods, biting your lip, breathing excessively through your mouth and pushing your tongue against your teeth,

So if you got braces for the first time, here are some helpful tips you can swear by. Read on.

  1. Listen to your orthodontist: This is kind of obvious, but seriously, listen to what your orthodontists says. You may wonder if you really need to do this or that, but not paying attention to your doctor’s advice can actually prolong your treatment, and extend the time you need to keep your braces on.

  2. Brush every time you eat: Although brushing twice a day is the standard oral care recommendation, when you wear braces, you should brush after every time you eat — even after that mid-afternoon vending machine snack or some late-night munchies. That's because food particles easily become trapped in the braces, and the longer those particles stay trapped, the greater risk you have of developing dental problems. Use a soft toothbrush with round bristles, or an electric toothbrush if you prefer.

  3. Rubber Bands: If you have been asked to use rubber bands, it is always recommended to carry rubber bands with you all the time, so if one breaks it can be replaced promptly. Rubber bands wear down and lose their elasticity, so they should be replaced often, definitely after every meal. Wearing the rubber bands all the time will keep the treatment progressing at an optimum pace.

  4. Use your back teeth to chew: Don’t bite into that burger with your front teeth like you are accustomed to doing. This actually gets the food to stick on to your braces. So eat food that you can cut into bite size pieces and chew easily with your back teeth.

  5. Drink plenty of water: Skip that soda, which will only erode your teeth, and drink water after meals. This not only keeps you healthy, but with water, you can swish it around your mouth to rinse out any big chunks of food.

  6. Stay away from crunchy food: Crunchy foods are dangerous, not only do they get stuck in your braces, they also can get quite painful to remove. Plus, crunchy foods can be bad news for the shiny braces you just got for yourself.

  7. Speak up: If during an appointment you have any query, no matter how silly, ask your orthodontist. Your doctor is there to help and guide you, so don’t shy away from asking questions and discussing your problems. Or if some part of the brace is hurting mildly, get it checked at once. Air your troubles, that is what your doctor is here for.

After The Braces Are Off-

Whitening products, including whitening toothpaste and mouthwash, should not be used until after braces are removed. After braces come off, some discoloration of the teeth will likely be present, so this is a good time for a child to use whitening strips.

My daughter who is 9 years old, has a problem with her tooth. Her tooths are not falling off normally. It is removed only after going to a dentist. Now it is seen that several small new teeths have started appearing behind the old one's. Doctor says that surgery should be done. What should we do?

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Sir surgery is usually done if she has developed a delayed eruption cyst. Please give appropriate details.Normally we take an OPG X-Ray to decide the eruption of the secondary teeth.Another issue is that the child is 9 yrs only. She has time till 14 yrs ( maximum time for eruption of all secondary teeth) and for the third molars aka wisdom tooth ( usually between 18-21 yrs of age).So there is still ample time(5yrs) for you to wait till eruption of permanent dentition.

•If your cavity in the tooth is caused by decay, your dentist will remove the decayed area and replace it with a filling. •If the pulp inside your tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp and then inserting a special type of filling to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection.

why yellow teeth?

BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
why yellow teeth?
There are two related reasons why your teeth slowly turn from white to yellow. The first well known one is foods and drinks that stain them directly and the 8 worst offenders for doing this will be covered ahead.

The second less commonly known reason is acids in certain foods and particularly drinks that wear away your teeth’s white enamel coating. Soda for instance is highly acidic and regularly leaving it sitting on your teeth can start to wear down their protective outer layer.

Why teeth turn yellow
When it’s at its thickest, tooth enamel is naturally white. Unfortunately as it is worn down it becomes translucent and starts to show through to the next layer of the tooth underneath called dentin.

This dentin layer of your teeth has a naturally yellower tone to it than that of the enamel that covers it, so the thinner your enamel layer becomes the more yellow your teeth will appear. This is why many elderly people have relatively yellow teeth. The longer you’ve had your teeth, the more chance you have to wear down their white protective coatings.

8 Foods and Drinks That Cause Yellow Teeth
Ahead are a list of foods and drinks that are some of the worst culprits for making your teeth go yellow. The reason that most of them have made this list is that they not only stain, but they are also acidic and can wear away enamel, so providing a double whammy of teeth yellowing.

While some of the drinks and foods that cause your teeth to turn yellow are unhealthy anyway and worth avoiding, one or two of these are otherwise good for you and following this list is a couple of surprisingly simple things you can do to minimize the damage these foods and drinks do to your teeth without giving them up.

Black Tea
black tea causes yellow teeth
Black tea is full of tannins that promote teeth staining and it is considered one of the most problematic drinks for teeth discoloration.

It’s particularly bad if you have it with other staining foods and drinks (anything you’d have trouble washing out of a white shirt counts) as these tannins tend to increased the way other heavily colored compounds adhere to the dental enamel surface.

Green tea is considered much less likely to cause problems and healthier as well, so making the switch to it could be a good thing to do for your future smile.

Cola, Soda and Sports Drinks
The phosphoric and citric acids in colas and many other sodas, along with their massive amounts of acidic sugar, all wear down tooth enamel. While cola, with its ammonia based caramel coloring and significant acid levels is worse, even lightly colored sodas are acidic enough to damage the enamel of your teeth.Sugary Sweets
Hard candies and brightly colored sweets that you chew are a big problem for teeth staining, not just because of their high sugar content, but also because of the length of time they stay in your mouth.

The longer it is the more damage they can do to your teeth’s defenses and the general rule with these sweets, and any other foods and drinks on this list, is if it can stain your tongue, it’ll probably be slowly staining your teeth.

Red and White Wine
red and white wine cause yellow teeth
Red wine is well known teeth stainer due to its deeply colored polyphenols and tannins. White wine is also a problem as its tannins and acidic nature primes your tooth enamel for staining from any other of the foods and drinks on this list if you have them around the same time.

Don't think that by drinking white wine you can avoid problems as it is just as bad, if not worse.

Curry and Other Sauces
curry causes yellow teeth
Brightly colored sauces like curries, sweet chili and tomato sauce can attach to porous dental enamel so you probably don’t want to leave them sitting on your teeth for too long.

Interestingly, having a starter of salad greens or steamed vegetables like broccoli or cauliflower has been shown to create a protective layer over your tooth enamel to lessen the chance of them staining. So eat your greens, especially at the start of your meal. They’re really good for you and your teeth.

Conditments
Table condiments like soy sauce, balsamic vinegar and ketchup are believed to contribute to teeth staining and you’d definitely want to follow the simple suggestions coming up ahead after using any of these.

Fruit Juices

While not quite on a par with cola or bizarrely colored sports drinks, commercial fruit juices are actually much more acidic than most people realize and particularly the brightly colored ones are a problem if you want to keep your teeth white.

Freshly made juices aren’t processed in the same way so aren’t as much of a problem acid wise, but you still don’t really want them lingering on your teeth for a long time.

Brightly Colored Fruits and Vegetables
While very healthy for you, some fruits, berries and vegetables like pomegranates, blueberries and beet are loaded with strongly colored compounds such as polyphenols. These substances are very beneficial inside our bodies, but not so much on our teeth.

Rather than avoiding the most healthy category on our list, let’s have a look at 2 ways you can minimize the staining potential of any of these foods and drinks.

2 Simple Ways to Prevent Yellow Teeth
You might be tempted, after reading about how staining and acidic to your teeth some of your favorite foods and drinks can be, to reach for your toothbrush straight after eating them. That would be a mistake.

Dental enamel actually becomes softer after eating one of these foods or drinking one of these drinks for at least half an hour afterwards. Brushing during this time may actually make things worse by wearing away the weakened enamel. Fortunately it should harden again within the hour so you can brush your teeth with a soft bristled toothbrush then if you like.

A better way is to remember to do 2 simple things after eating or drinking any of the suspects on the list above.

The first is to have a big sip of water after you’ve finished your meal or drink and swirl it around your mouth to clear away any acids or staining compounds. Just remembering this alone can make a big difference to how white your teeth stay.

The second is to actively try and get more saliva into your mouth after eating and let it move over your teeth. It’s easy to do after a sip of water and saliva is your mouth’s natural defense against enamel erosion, staining and cavities.

You’ve probably heard of chewing sugar-free gum after a meal for the same reason, but it isn’t needed (most sugar-free gum contains potentially dangerous aspartame so it’s best avoided). As long as you swirled water around first, you should be easily able to build up a little extra saliva and do the same again with it.

Before long this will become a habit that will keep your teeth strong, white and protected, even if you eat and drink some of the things on the list fairly often.

Hello Lybrate user, at the age of 22, it would be best to undergo orthodontic treatment for closure of spaces, where teeth will be moved slowly over a period of time within the bone, with the help of braces and the results are permanent with proper planned retention. On the contrary the bonding material may get discolored over a period of time and also chip off if not taken care properly. Though it may be a faster option it may not last long. You need to visit an Orthodontist for further details.

First Aid For Common Tooth Injuries

First Aid For Common Tooth Injuries

A chipped or knocked out tooth can be a very painful condition. Tooth injuries are most often caused during a sports activity or when you take a nasty fall. And such accidents can hamper your general well-being, your ability to enjoy food, your appearance and your precious smile.

Different types of tooth injuries:

  1. A minor chip: A minor tooth fracture usually involves chipping of the enamel only
  2. A major chip: A deeper fracture can involve chipping of both the enamel and the dentin of a tooth
  3. A serious fracture that exposes the nerve and blood vessels in the centre of the teeth
  4. A fully displaced teeth: Here the tooth is forced upward, downward or to the side
  5. A knocked off teeth: One that lands in your hand or shatters in the ground after impact
  6. Trauma injuries: A more serious accident that involves head, neck and facial trauma
  7. Wear and tear: Cavities or chewing and biting on hard objects like pencils, ice cubes, or hard chocolates can also lead to tooth injury
  8. Fighting the fight: When 'I'll break your teeth' ceases to be an empty threat

How are tooth fractures treated?

Treatment depends on the extent of your fractures. A knocked out teeth can be re-implanted in many cases. A permanent tooth that is re-implanted within 30 minutes has the highest chance of success. Here's what you can do to save your tooth:

  1. Collect your broken tooth: Carefully collect the tooth fragments to not cause any additional damage which may prevent re-implantation. Avoid touching the root part of the tooth. Wash it gently in lukewarm water and keep it in a small bowl of milk. Avoid scrubbing or scraping to remove dirt.
  2. Reinsert your teeth if possible: Once you rinse your teeth, try to reinsert your teeth in the cavity. This may be a painful exercise, so proceed only if you think you can bear through it. You can store it between your cheek and gum to prevent drying or in a bowl of whole milk.
  3. Take care of yourself: If there is bleeding, give your mouth a good rinse to clear off the blood that is blocking the view. Identify the source of bleeding and press in with a sterile gauze or cloth.
  4. Give yourself a treat: This is a great way to get your mind off the pain and works wonders for children. Treat yourself with an ice lolly/ frozen pop to ease out the pain. If there is any cut on your gums or lips, another equally tasty home remedy is to cover it with sugar which will temporarily stop the bleeding and the sweetness will help you to forget the pain for the time being.
  5. Go to a dentist: Even if it is a minor chip, it is always advisable to see a dentist, as the cut may be sharp and can eventually end up hurting your tongue.

Your teeth need to last your lifetime, so take good care of them, especially when faced with an injury.

If the mouth ulcer is causing a lot of pain, gently rub a small ice cube over the spot or rinse your mouth with ice-cold water. You could also chew on a clove bud (lavang) and direct the juice generated to the area where the ulcer is located. Clove buds are a great ingredient to cure sore throat too. To prevent the ulcerated area from getting infected, make it a point to rinse your mouth with a little salt water. Remember, this won’t make the ulcer disappear, but it can help reduce the pain. Honey is a natural humectant. It helps reduce scarring and hastens the process of new tissue growth. This, along with its anti-microbial effect ensures faster healing of the mouth ulcer. Chew a few leaves of tulsi along with some water about three to four times every day. This will help in getting rid of ulcers faster and also have a preventive action against their recurrence. Applying a little coconut oil directly onto the mouth ulcer or chewing some coconut (fresh or dry) helps reduce pain and inflammation and hence, ulcers heal faster. Mix some sugar to crushed khus-khus seeds and consume this mixture for instant relief from ulcers. You could apply a little ghee directly to the ulcerated area, or drink a glass of buttermilk two or three times every day. Mouth ulcers left untreated generally go away in a week or so; with these home remedies, you can expect faster relief. However, if you notice an ulcer in the mouth that is persistently present although it does not cause you any pain, do not neglect it or try to treat it with home remedies beyond a few days. Make it a point to see a doctor soon because often, a painless mouth ulcer is one of the earliest signs of oral cancer.
