I am 20 years old. And I think I am getting mentally unstable. I cannot eat, think, sleep or do anything properly. I had feelings for a girl but she does not love me and I think this is the reason for everything. I have lost interest in everything. I need only some advice. Nothing more.

Hello, I can understand your pain at losing one very important person in life. You probably had hopes of spending long time with her and had plans for the future and now nothing is going to happen. All these thoughts might be causing you sadness, disappointment and some anxiety and anger on the other hand. While it's important to be an important part of someone else's life, yet it's also important to know when to call it off if it's not working anymore. 1. At this age it is common for boys and girls to get attracted to each other and spent some time together. But equally common is breakups when one or both see that their needs are too different now and the other person will not fit the requirements any more. While this process is very heart breaking, but it is also important so that you can meet different people and see who is your kind of person and who will help you in the next phase of life ie. Job, marriage children. 2. By going through different relationships you will also understand yourself better and discover many hidden qualities and weaknesses in you. It's your growing edge to work through your weaknesses and sharpen your qualities. You will also discover your passion, dreams and hobbies and interests. 3. I suggest that you look at this breakup as a learning lesson and an opportunity to improve on any thing that was your mistake and assess your life choices again. What was meant to go will go. Let it go and you carry on with your journey. 4. Being flexible and independant in relationships is important. There will be times when you might not have any body's support or company. That is the time to learn to be your own friend and give yourself that love which you want from a close friend. This is healthy self love and very important for self confidence and high self esteem. 5. Indulge yourself with meeting new people, going places, discovering your passion, hobbies etc. Spend time alone with yourself to nurture the person within you.

I suffering from anxiety and depression. What to do? Please help me.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist,
I suffering from anxiety and depression. What to do? Please help me.
Anxiety is often seen to go with depression but the underlying cause could be anger and you need to identify whether that is of recent origin or comes from some experience in childhood. If it recent you can easily find out the origin and deal with it; if it from childhood do meet with a counselor and sort out the deep rooted issues concerning the unexpressed emotions from that time. In the meantime do the following, sincerely: Have a good night?s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don?t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love: find someone to love and to love you back. If you love yourself adequately, you will never do harm to yourself. Be positive always and learn to do everything possible to invest into yourself. Life is extremely precious and because the depression, which is a mood disorder, makes you feel like giving up you must still persevere. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive everyday and learn to be contended with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved. Because you are young the prognosis is good subject to your cooperation.

Dear Lybrate-user, it is good that you wants to stop smoking, we are destroying our health by smoking normal human takes oxygen into lungs 12 -15 times per minute (12 - 15 breaths) Lungs mixes oxygen in our blood and it purifies our blood, by smoking we are mixing not only oxygen adding and mixing bad elements like Nicotine etc. In Oxygen, that spoils our blood and our body organs like Lungs, Heart, kidney etc… How to quit: By willingness and willpower" where there is a will there is a way" Reduce one by one day by day.

Even one injection of b12. Containing some 1000 or more is enough. And both of them are not the reason for pimples. Vit deficiency is due to dietary deficiency.

I smoke every day how I quit this were you have any solution for this? And one more thing I drink also please give solution for this too!

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
The combination of alcohol and smoking is deadly for your health. I am so glad that you are seeking to get rid of these habits and that will play a major role in your recovery. You must stop them both, abruptly and immediately. If you think that you will find it very difficult, then admit yourself to a hospital and go for de-addiction: which normally lasts for about two weeks. Then follow that up with addiction counseling from a professional for at least three years to completely get rid of this habit. If this is also not enough, then admit yourself into a de-addiction center and stay there for at least 6 months and after that attend counseling with a professional. There are medicines that help with the smoking and drinking just to ease the initial craving. Ultimately, it is your will power and the support that you receive from the medical fraternity and your close and dear ones. You must also learn to substitute and deal with the oral need, a rigid value system, the script issue, and of course look at all the genetic factors to plan a strategy not to get into what is called ?cross addictions? i.e. another form of addiction that may appear alright but is in fact as bad as your primary addiction. The center or hospital and the counselor will advise and guide you on several measures and precautions you will need to take to stay with your resolve. I congratulate you on this fabulous decision that will benefit you firstly, and your entire family. You are taking action that will have major bearing to many lives.

Gets angry and panic in very little things. What should I do?
Dear, anger and aggression are emotions. Anger comes when you become irritated. Irritation happens when you don't like something, or when something is repeated. As anger is an emotion, it should be vent out. You should be able to throw anger out instead of controlling it. But more perfect will be, know the frustrating situations and stop being emotional. If practiced properly, you will not get irritated at those circumstances at all. Those techniques are much easier to understand. For further assistance you can concern me privately.Take care.

How would quitting tobacco now help,if I have been a life long consumer of it?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist,
Quitting tobacco at any time is good because you can reverse most of the damage it has done to your body and brain. Continuing the smoking can only hasten disease or death. If you have been healthy in spite of smoking, you are still at risk because the effects may be silently developing. Smoking is bad, period. It is harmful to you, your family, and to the public through side stream smoke and secondhand smoke. Come on, don’t get stuck at debating reasons, just do it and save a lot of medical expenses and suffering to so many affected. The fact that you are asking this question itself gives me the impression that you are contemplating quitting. That is the best for prognosis. I recommend you read my book on addictions to understand more and know recovery strategies. On the receipt of Rs. 250/-, I can send you a copy, postage free.
