C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Experts recommend that lifestyle changes should be added to medication therapy when people with diabetes try to reduce their blood pressure. These changes include reduction of salt intake, weight loss, and moderately intense physical activity, like brisk walking for 30 to 45 minutes most days of the week. A study in 2002 found that 19.3 million American adults had diabetes, and it is estimated that a third of these adults are undiagnosed. Risk factors for diabetes include advancing age, obesity or being overweight, a family history of type 2 diabetes, and being a member of a minority population at increased risk. African-Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, Alaska natives, and Asians are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes. It is estimated that an additional 26% of the US adult population has "pre-diabetes" and modification of some risk factors, like weight or sedentary lifestyle, may help these adults avoid development of diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends that people have a fasting plasma glucose test for an initial screening test. A positive test is determined by a level of blood glucose of greater than 126 mg/dL. If you have a positive fasting glucose test, your doctor may want to confirm it on a separate day with a repeat test. If your test results are "borderline" you may also want to have the test repeated on a separate occasion. There are several different screening tests to determine if you are at risk of diabetes or if you have diabetes. Each test has different advantages and disadvantages. If you have hypertension, your doctor should screen you for glucose intolerance or type 2 diabetes. There is adequate evidence that people with blood pressure above 135/80 mm Hg who have diabetes discovered through a screening program will benefit from the strict blood pressure control strategies indicated for diabetic patients to reduce coronary heart disease.
The available evidence suggests that all adults with high blood pressure readings that are consistently greater than 135/80 mm Hg benefit from tighter control of risk factors associated with diabetes for prevention of coronary heart disease.

Do You Know a Flu Shot Can Prevent a Heart Attack?

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Do You Know a Flu Shot Can Prevent a Heart Attack?

A flu shot can prevent a heart attack! Here’s how.

Every year, heart diseases become a major reason of death all over the world.  But did you know that a simple vaccine like a flu shot can be instrumental in saving you from a heart attack?

Read on to find how this simple vaccine can save your life...

Influenza or flu has been linked with heart diseases for long and patients suffering from these diseases are always advised to be cautious in the flu season to reduce the risk of heart attacks. The ‘Journal of the American Medical Association’ recently published a study, which revealed that people who have already observed symptoms of heart diseases in them, can diminish their chances of getting a heart attack and stroke by opting to get a flu shot. Among the 6735 participants of the study, 50% were given flu shots. The results observed declared that there was 36% less chance of heart diseases and stroke resulting in death in people who had received this vaccine. Moreover, recent sufferers of a heart attack were proved to be at 55% reduced threat of experiencing another major heart problem after taking the shot.

How can the flu vaccine reduce the risk of a heart attack?

The flu vaccine  works towards strengthening your immune system, and thereby decreasing the risks of a potential stroke.

One theory suggests that if a person is suffering from flu, he/she experiences an increased heart rate, elevated body temperature and augmented oxygen content of the blood, besides an alteration in the consistency in blood, which can give rise to a blood clot. Now, heart attack is mostly caused when an artery of a person is 85-90 per cent blocked by plaque, but a person having flu may be at a risk of getting it merely with 40 per cent artery blockage. The function of the flu shot is to prevent flu, which in turn prevents plaque build up in your body, thereby reducing chances of a heart attack.

Another hypothesis is that the flu shot intervenes with the functioning of the immune system of your body, and helps in developing antibodies, which provide better protection against different types of infections, thus preventing heart attacks and strokes.

Reasons for Chest Pain in Young Adults Cough/Cold: Children may experience benign pain in the chest after a severe bout of cold and persistent cough. Pleurisy: Pain may originate from inflammation of the lining around the lungs. The pain may become worse by deep breathing. Pleurisy is caused along with a viral syndrome. Pericarditis: If the inflammation involves the pericardium covering the heart muscle, the result could be chest pain that often exacerbates with deep breathing. First Aid for a Heart Attack ImageHypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: The condition occurs due to the increase in thickness of the septum and the left ventricular wall. The result of this rare condition could be chest pain on exertion, irregular heartbeats, and shortness of breath. Increased voltage could be reported on an EKG due to the thick heart muscle. The condition may be found in students engaging in strenuous physical activities, which may include football, basketball, or other athletic activities. Mitral Valve Prolapsed: A few young adults may experience chest pain from the prolapse of the mitral valve into the left atrium when there is contraction in the left ventricle. The condition may also cause intermittent symptoms, such as weakness, shortness of breath, palpitation, dizziness, and extreme fatigue. A 2D echocardiogram is used to diagnose the condition. Syndrome X: Chest pain in young adults may be experienced due to obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and inactivity. Though tests may not confirm coronary artery disease, such people are at an increased risk of cardiovascular event and try to lose weight. The doctor may prescribe cholesterol, blood pressure medications and encouraged to exercise. Acid Reflux: The condition can lead to heartburn that often mimics chest pain. Gallstone Symptoms: In some adults, gall bladder symptoms can be felt like the signs of a coronary artery disease. Most cases of chest pain in young adults are actually a gall bladder attack. Anxiety: Some people with anxiety problem may experience chest pain symptoms. It is normal for such people to feel chest pain when they are anxious and stressed. Anxiety can only worsen the symptoms. Heart problems: Congenital heart abnormality is the primary cause of chest pain in young adults. The pain may also be caused due to blood clotting. Smoking is the most common risk factor in young people that can constrict blood vessels and promote blood clots. Some important remedies are given below for the treatment of chest pain: Arnica mont. – Chest pain with sore and bruised feeling. Ranunculus b. – Good remedy for intercostal rheumatism, sharp stitching pain in the chest along with dyspnoea. Rhus tox. – Pains extend to the shoulders, worse by initial motion and cold-damp weather, better continued motion and warmth. Kali carb. – Stitching pain in the chest, which gets worse between 2-3 A.M Actea racemosa. – Pain worse on the right side. Rumex c. – Sharp stitching pain through the left lung, often with cough. Bryonia – Chest pain is of stitching, burning and stabbing in nature, is worse by motion and better by rest and pressure. Thirst for large quantities of water and dryness of mucous membranes often accompanies. Stannum – Knife like stitches, worse on bending forward and left side. I have asthma from 9 yrs. But last few days I am having chest pain. Please help me.
A good diet is an important part of your overall asthma treatment plan. Just like regular exercise, a healthy diet is good for everyone. That goes for people with asthma too. According to ayurveda, the asthma of recent origin can be treated effectively but if it becomes chronic, it can only be managed. It is not the drug alone that can give relief from asthma but regulation of diet and the change of conceptual thinking can also play a great role. Along with proper ayurvedic medication and control over eating and living, asthmatics can get better and quick results. During an acute attack, a hot chest and shoulder pack, repeatedly given every half an hour, will have a sedative effect upon the nerves and a relaxing influence generally, giving the quickest and most satisfactory relief. Hot milk or hot water when sipped little by little, provides immediate relief from the attack. The inhalation of steam-laden air may be provided by using an ordinary teakettle, attaching a funnel to the spout, and inhaling from the upper wide end of the cone. Mustard oil (sarason) is a good remedy. Take a spoonful with jaggery, twice a day. Only the use of pippalee (piper longum) powder along with pure honey, makes an attack of asthma subside. There are thousand s of remedy. Go for a proper ayurveda treatment as early as possible.

There are different causes of chest pain. Cardiac chest pain or angina is squeezing type of heaviness which appears on working hard and goes away on resting. Gastritis is burning type of pain related to meals. There are other causes of chest pain like muscular pain also. It is best if you get yourself evaluated properly by a cardiologist. Some tests like treadmill test can help differentiate cardiac chest pain from noncardiac chest pain.
