Is it safe to take juice of pomegranate and beetroot during first trimester. If it is safe, how much it should be taken.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
A serving of pomegranate juice contains 26.1 micrograms of vitamin K, a considerable portion of the 90 micrograms of this vitamin you need each day when you are pregnant. The vitamin K in your diet promotes normal blood clotting and bone strength, both in you and your fetus, so it is critical to take in adequate amounts. Drinking pomegranate juice can help you do that, particularly if you consume it in a meal rich in vitamin K-rich foods, such as parsley. Beetroot or Chukundar I contains a nutritious pigment known as the betacyanin , which detoxifies the liver and the blood. Beetroot thus helps in removing the toxins from the body, which means the fatty acids will not get the chance to get deposited in the body. A healthy liver means the proper functioning of the digestive system, and also a fit and fine body during pregnancy. A large number of women tend to put on weight during pregnancy, so consuming a beetroot will suppress this tendency to a certain extent. Iron is highly essential for every woman at any point in time. But during pregnancy, it is even more essential. Beetroot helps enhance the hemoglobin content of the blood. Thus, a pregnant woman is advised to consume beetroot juice for increasing the iron content of the body. Drinking beetroot juice during pregnancy keeps a woman from developing anemia. Beetroot also contains vitamin C. This vitamin helps the body absorb the iron present in the beetroot. If an expecting mother consumes this juice throughout her pregnancy, then she can surely give birth to a healthy and strong baby.

My friend Preeti had unprotected sex with her boyfriend Lokesh last weekend. He has not ejaculated his sperm but he felt that a drop of sperm has came out of his penis during intercourse. Then he suddenly pulled out his penis. He has given her an I-Pill the next day. Is there any possibility that she will pregnant? How can we know that she is pregnant? How to avoid pregnancy if she gets pregnant?

Dear lybrate user, chances of pregnancy are negligible in your case. One can know about presence of pregnancy by doing urine pregnancy test if she misses her menstrual period. It can be detected earlier by doing a blood test.

I am 31 years old married women trying to conceive. What diet should me and my husband will have before planning for it. How frequent do we need to have intercourse.

Training in IVF / ICSI, Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery, MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Pune
Diet should be healthy with lot of fresh fruits and salads which have antioxidants which can have beneficial effect. If you are not in the correct bmi then you should try aiming to be in the bmi of 25. A ten percent loss of weight (over a couple of months) can be very helpful to achieve pregnancy. Intercourse can be as frequent as possible. Alternate days or naturally possible intercourse from 10th to 17th day (in case of regular 28 - 30 days cycle) can be done.

Homeopathy - Can it Help Treat Infertility in Women?

Homeopath, Lucknow
Homeopathy - Can it Help Treat Infertility in Women?

For a married couple, having a child is the next step to completing the family picture. However, for various reasons, some attributed to the male and some to the female, this picture remains incomplete.
Talking to a doctor is one of the best starting points. There could be deep-rooted causes for this issue, and homeopathy aims in treating the root cause and not just infertility. A good homeopath will ask you numerous questions to find out associated symptoms, family history, etc., and then arrive at a remedy that would work best for you. This is a highly customised therapy and so self-medication based on a friend or family member’s recommendation is best avoided.

Infertility in females is often caused by the following reasons:

  1. Irregular menstruation
  2. Hormonal imbalance
  3. Advancing age
  4. Emotional stress
  5. Obesity
  6. Excessive smoking
  7. Alcohol consumption
  8. Sexually transmitted diseases (Chlamydia, gonorrhoea)
  9. Structural abnormalities in the pelvic area including fibroids, pelvic adhesions, blocked fallopian tubes, etc.
  10. Endometriosis
  11. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)
  12. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  13. Thyroid disorders
  14. Diabetes

With more and more women coming out in the open to discuss, researchers have started working towards identifying the problem and working towards the treatment. The success rate of homeopathy in treating infertility is also on the rise. As with any medical condition, homeopathy treats not just the problem or symptom at hand, but the person holistically. Read on to know some of the common homeopathic remedies, but make sure you have a detailed discussion with doctor to identify what would work best for you. Self-medication is best avoided.

  1. In women with reduced sexual drive, Agnus and Sepia are widely used. The vaginal is extremely dry which could be painful during sex. There is also a bearing down sensation of the uterus in these women.
  2. In women with reduced menstruation, Pulsatilla and Sepia are widely used. The periods are never on the expected date, and when they occur, the flow is quite scanty and suppressed. Pulsatilla is also used when ovarian cysts are present. Sepia is useful in women that are prone to miscarriages.
  3. In women with excessive menstruation, Calcarea and Aletris are widely used. The periods happen before time, is too long with profuse bleeding. This excessive bleeding also causes anaemia, weakness, and fatigue. These women might also have frequent abortions.
  4. In women who have experienced a miscarriage in their third month earlier, with uterine and ovarian inflammation, Sabina is used.
  5. In women who are not able to retain sperms, Natrum carb is useful. There could be an offensive smelling vaginal discharge which is also very irritating and itching.

These are just some of the common remedies, but there are more, and each patient would require different therapy based on associated symptoms.

Teething troubles:

Teethers, chewing of latex, teething rings, pacifier for temporary pain relief are prone to cause infection and are unhealthy for small babies.

Healthy ayurveda alternative:

Teething begins at 4-7 months of age and continue up to 30-32 months of age for full set of 20 primary teeth or baby teeth. Teething and childhood illness are commonly associated. There is daytime restlessness, thumb sucking, gum rubbing, drooling, loss if appetite, specific and diarrhoeal infections, respiratory infections linked with teething.

In allopathy paracetamol for fever control, lingocaine hydrochloride as local anaesthetic, choline salicylate (similar to aspirin) are generally advised.

Temporary pain relief is provided by teething rings, chewing bread sticks, oven hardened bread, frozen bread, pacifier for temporary pain relief are given to child to apply pressure to painful areas.

Pressurising mechanics except eatable items need proper sterilisation again n again but many a times these become carrier of infection themselves.

There is a time tested ayurveda medicine designed by ancient ayurveda in the name of dantodbhedgadantak rasa (dant-o-bhed- gada-antak rasa). Pure natural ingredients. This is presented in 125 mg pills.

1 pill crushed and mixed in honey or water or mother's milk and is rubbed on gums of baby at eruption points. May be done thrice a day.

It controls diarrhoea, fever, vomiting, pain in abdomen, crying by babies - associated with teething.

This medicine enhances the secretion of gastric juices and bile and strengthens the action of these thereby managing control over troubles faced by baby.

This is harmless. Ignorant parents, thinking these marvels as outdated, unpalatable, fall prey to toxic mechanisms.

There are natural pressure applicators such as clean carrot and similar other things which are nature's gift and should be preferred.

Earache: Is It an Ear Infection?

ENT Specialist, Delhi
Earache: Is It an Ear Infection?

Ear infection is a disorder which can either be viral or bacterial, affecting one’s middle ear the most. This disorder is painful as fluid accumulates in the ear leading to inflammation. Infections of the ear can either be chronic or acute in nature, the damage is more prominent in case of chronic infections. Acute ear infections can be painful but they usually fade away in a few days’ time.

In case of an ear infection, you will experience pain in the ear. A pressure may develop in the ear accompanied by drainage of pus from the ears. Some severe cases might also lead to loss of hearing, be it temporary or permanent. The symptoms of ear infection may develop and affect both the ears. Fever during ear infections is another common auxiliary condition.

Ear infections tend to occur when the Eustachian tubes in the ear get blocked as a result of fluid accumulation in the ear. The Eustachian tubes can get blocked due to the following reasons –

  1. Being affected by allergies
  2. Conditions such as cold can lead to ear infection
  3. Problems in the sinuses
  4. Excessive smoking
  5. Infected adenoid glands

In addition to the causes, there are certain risk factors which can make one prone to ear infections, some of them being:

  1. Narrow Eustachian tubes in children increase the risks of ear infections
  2. Changes in climate and altitude
  3. Second hand exposure to cigarette smoke

For mild symptoms, simple home remedies will suffice. A warm compress on the affected area can reduce the pain. Taking pain relieving medications such as ibuprofen can also help in reducing pain. For moderate symptoms, antibiotics may be required to treat the bacterial infection.
If other treatments do not work, then surgery may be required. Usually tubes are inserted in the ear to drain the accumulated fluid. If it involves the adenoid glands, then surgical removal of the adenoid glands may be required. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ENT specialist.

My wife is 28 years old, she was thin and had perfect bmi last year. But for the past 6 months she is gaining weight especially in her arms and thighs. We have one child and planning for the second baby. Will this weight gain affect our second baby plan ? Pls suggest how to reduce her weight. Whether its a sign of thyroid ?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
YES, sudden gain in weight is a sign of incoming hormonal problems and it could be thyroid disease or other hormonal imbalance problems like PCOD........It would be best to control weight by use of exercises ( cardiovascular exercises, which are done in GYM under supervision of a trained gYM instructor and physician guidance ) ,....... diet also plays a major part, so meet a dietitian with your intake chart of 3 days so that things can be planned as per your eating habits and work pattern....... YOu can try to conceive for a few months and see, if you cant, then you should seek the consultation and treatment of gynecologist to help you conceive
