Dear Lybrate user, I can understand how negative thinking can disrupt many aspects of daily life. There are many ways to challenge negative thinking. Changing negative thoughts to positive thoughts takes time. One technique you can try is: Start with small steps and celebrate repeated small moments of positive feelings. This works better than looking forward to positive big life changes. There are many more techniques that are used in counselling in this regard. Please consult for further information. Good Luck.

Sir I am facing lot of stress, memory loss, tension, less confidence. please tell me how to over common these problems.

Sir I am facing lot of stress, memory loss, tension, less confidence. please tell me how to over common these problems.
Your memory loss, tension and perhaps low confidence is all related to the stress that you are experiencing. First of all, the intensity of stress is in the perception. Change your perception, there is no stress: it’s like looking at a glass half full or half empty. Apart from that, all your emotions need to be dealt with by expression i.e. You need to talk about the feelings. Then you need to exercise regularly, eat fiber foods (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), sleep at least 8 hours every day, learn Yoga and meditation, learn stress management, and do a personality development course. Because you are into studies, follow a tight schedule, with good breaks and study habits. If group study helps you, do it with the right people. If tutoring is required, arrange for the same. These should see you through successfully without the stress.

First of all life is too precious and this momentary feeling will come up periodically during your depression. Alcohol only aggravates the depression. In both of these instances and in many more others, if you take care of the depression you will have a great life and a healthy one too. You must go and meet with a counselor immediately and if that person advises that you meet with a doctor you must do so and cooperate to your utmost. Please visit these professionals along with your parents. In the meantime please do the following sincerely because you could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do calisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Few Warning Signs of Parkinson's Disease You Should Know!

MCh, MBBS, MRCS (UK)

Few Warning Signs of Parkinson's Disease You Should Know!

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative condition that affects your brain cells which produce dopamine and thus hampering all kinds of motor functioning and other emotional responses. After the disease is diagnosed, medication and therapy can help to provide relief from the symptoms to a large extent but a permanent cure is not possible.

Causes:

The disorder does not have a definite set of causes. A small percentage of the cases have been related to hereditary factors and others have a range of environmental causes associated with them.

1. Genetic factors:

Specific gene mutations and gene variations have been proved to cause Parkinson's, such as SNCA, PARK2, PARK7, PINK1 and LRRK2. These make or recycle proteins which are linked to the disease.

Research shows that men are at a 1.75 times greater risk of developing the condition than women are. Also, age plays a role with most cases occurring after the age of 60.

2. Environmental factors:

Regular exposure to inorganic insecticides, pesticides, herbicides and heavy metals or other toxins may cause the disorder. In rare cases, Parkinson's disease occurs in the aftermath of a severe head injury or immune disorders.

Symptoms:

The symptoms can be classified into two broad categories-

1. Motor symptoms:

  • The hand tremors when in resting position
  • The grip loosens
  • Walking slows down
  • Facial muscles freeze partially
  • Speech is slurred
  • Balance is disturbed
  • Swallowing is painful
  • Urination is abnormally frequent
  • Dementia-like symptoms are seen
  • There is involuntary twitching of the fingers and toes
  • Repetition of the same movement in quick succession is nearly impossible

2. Non-motor symptoms:

  • Dental problems
  • Vision impairment
  • Skin disorders
  • Panic attacks
  • Excessive secretion of saliva
  • Extreme weight loss or gain
  • Sexual problems
  • Loss of sense of smell
  • Lowering of the pitch of the voice
  • Fatigue

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Neurosurgeon.

I want to give up smoking. Can't do it without help. What do you suggest/advise. I have been smoking for forty years. I had a very bad cough this winter and decided that I must give up.

Ph. D - Psychology, Professional Certified Coach
Psychologist, Ahmedabad
It is good that you are keeping physically active. What you now need to focus on is to come up with the strategies that will help you with the craving. For example, what would help you to distract your mind from smoking. If you like tea or coffee you may decide to grab one instead of a cigarette. Or perhaps keeping a chewing gum or candy and grab one instead. I would also suggest that exam might be a stressful time so do not try quitting right now as, it will increase your chances for relapse which will effect your motivation and confidence to quit. Best way to quit is to work on individualized plan and strategies that will help you maintain the motivation and help manage your craving. Following tips might help. I do offer 3 to 6 month program where I talk with client on a weekly basis. If you are interested than you may book initial online audio consultation. Smoking has many adverse effect on different system in your body. Congratulations that you are thinking about quitting it. Now you need to figure out the best strategy that works for you. Following information may help you. One of the few habits which takes very systematic approach and needs lot of support and individualized strategies to quit successfully. Data such as - since how long are you smoking and how many cigarettes a day you consume are important information. Also have you tried quitting it earlier? how successful were you? and what are your personal reasons to stop smoking? all these are also important part of your success strategy. Broadly speaking your reasons for not smoking work as your motivator. The stronger the reasons behind not smoking the higher the motivation and thus higher the chances for you to be successful. Also your body will have a withdrawal symptoms and it is very important to come up with strategies and solid plan to counter these withdrawal symptoms. These strategies should be tailor-maid as per your need and situation. If you consider these and many other individualized approach and if you have a solid support throughout your journey. You would be able to make a shift from being a smoker to a non smoker. Along with this eating healthy and having a good routine for eat and sleep is also very important. Exercise plays a huge roll when it comes to staying positively motivated and managing cravings. As a trained wellness coach I would be able to help you develop individualized plan and strategies. If you are open for an online consultation feel free to book an audio consultation. I also offer 3 to 6 months plan and support to help on a weekly basis. Hope this helps, wishing you very best,

Dear lybrate-user, I can understand your problem. Diseases that commonly cause shaky hands include parkinson's disease, overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), and multiple sclerosis. Shaky hands may occur after ingesting or withdrawing from certain drugs or substances, such as alcohol and caffeine. You are too young for parkinson. You need to check your thyroid. Please consult a physician. Take care.

My wife aged 43 years is taking her depression treatment of Tab. PaxidepCR 12.5 mg OD and Tab. Tab. Sulpitac 50 mg since May 2007. She is also a patient of Schizophrenia and now she is stable with the treatment. Will she take this treatment for life long or other wise?

(MRCPSYCH-UK), MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Hyderabad
As of today, treatment for some forms of schizophrenia is life long. Since 2007, she is suffering from schizophrenia. So in all respects, she may have to take the medicines for life. Some intelligent doctor like me said the same for cancer and AIDS. But research has caught up and now we have treatment for both cancers and AIDS. So in all likelihood, there will be a permanent cure for schizophrenia.

Hi lybrate-user, these methods can help alleviate the symptoms of stress and anxiety, especially if used in conjunction with traditional methods, and are helpful tools to have in your box, next time you're feeling overwhelmed. 1. Circuit breaker - Get your mind off the problem, it's not going anywhere, but you can. Take the dog for a mini walk. Revisit your funniest emails. Take yourself to a yoga or Pilates class. Meditate. Listen to your favourite song. Google a beach in Tahiti. Make your self a cup of herbal tea. 2. Avoid caffeine - Caffeine is a stimulant that increases adrenaline in the body, the very hormone you are looking to reduce. Avoid coffee (decaf is OK), colas, guarana, chocolate, and more than 2 cups of tea daily. 3. Eat small meals often - Maintaining steady blood sugar levels is key to stabilizing mood. Ensure you have a small meal every 2-3 hours that contains protein. For example, a hard-boiled egg and lettuce, some almonds, a can of tuna and brown rice. 4. Breathe - The more anxious you become, breathing becomes shallower and higher in the chest. Consciously lengthen your breath, breathing deeper into the belly. Count to three on the in-breath, and four on the out-breath. 5. Talk to yourself - Affirmations are positive, self-affirming messages to self. In the case of anxiety, calming and positive is required. Try "All will be well" or "I always cope, just breathe and relax" 6. Tell someone who cares - Phone your mum or a friend. Acknowledging you are finding a situation stressful, and being heard and understood by someone who cares for you, even if they can't physically help, will reduce stress levels. 7. Cocooning - In the moment you feel totally overwhelmed, gently place both palms side by side on your face, fingers gently resting on your closed eyelids. This can help centre you, give you a momentary break and quieten the mind, until you feel more centred and ready to face the world again. 8. Seek help - If anxiety and stress has become a significant part your life, seek help from a psychologist or counselor, stress is their specialty. You don't have to do this on your own - remember, it's a sign of strength, not weakness, to seek help. Hope this helps, Good Luck.

I am 21 year old guy and suffering from social anxiety. I do not know how to overcome this.
Social Anxiety can be overcome by behavioral therapy. You can do I yourself at home. Flooding, a form of behavioral therapy, is particularly helpful for people with social anxiety. To practice flooding, simply expose yourself to as many social situations as possible, and feel the anxiety. Gradually, your anxiety related to social events will diminish and disappear.
