Hi, My daughter aged 5 years has been advised an adenoidectomy. She is a mouth breather, gets ear infections whenever she gets a cold which she picks up from school. There is no other complication. But there is definite improvement - the snoring has stopped etc. I am very hesitant to have her get this operation. Is there some way to avoid this operation?

Enlarged adenoids cause mouth breathing in children mainly in the age-group of 4 to 8 years. Long term mouth breathing can lead to lot of problems for the child like Dental mal-occlusion & change in shape of bones of face during the growing age. Your daughter requires medical management & if not responding then surgery should be planned to prevent Dental & facial distortion.

Gargling with warm salt water is an effective way to treat a sore throat. Salt can even help kill the bacteria or virus causing pharyngitis. Mix three teaspoons of salt (preferably sea salt) in two cups of warm water. Gargle with this solution. Do not swallow it. Spit the water out after gargling. Several things can be done to prevent cold: -Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. -Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. -Get plenty of rest/sleep.Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. -Drink plenty of fluids(veg/tomato soups,dal water/coconut water/herbal tea etc), and eat nutritious food(like sprouts/boiled eggs without yolk with milk). Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine -Treatment:A cold usually lasts for a week or two. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn't need medical treatment. -Gargle to keep from getting a sore throat.Take only lukewarm water to drink during the day -Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation. -Tablet nasorest-p once/twice daily may ease breathing. -Do steam inhalation once or twice daily. -Complications like infections of ears, throat, sinuses or lungs must be treated with antibiotics. -Cough- For dry cough.Take syrup Alex-D.(1 tsp thrice daily) -Productive cough:it brings up mucus from behind the throat or lungs.Use syrup Alex. -Get chest xray done if cough lasts for more than a week and consult doctor immediately. -Head and Body Aches- Take tablet dolo-650 mg for fever once or twice daily

Bleeding from nose: cold water on nose and head will help. If no result, endoscopy of nose to locate the bleeder and cautery of bleeder will cure you.

There r lots of reasons for vertigo. U should meet an ENT doctor for checkup. Migrain is one of the common cause. Please remember headache is not necessary for migrainous vertigo. Is there any tension in ur mind( may be due to study)

U r probably suffering from some sort of viral infection which doesn't get releived on taking antibiotics. You should do warm saline gargals 5-6 times. And more details are neede for proper diagnosis.

You have GERD, which is the root cause of every problem. Eat a regular diet but no medicines. No heavy foods which are likely to come out of valve separating stomach from upper food pipe. No oils or heavy spices. Reduce weight by eating healthy semisolid nourishment and light exercise. Pounding heart is due to extra load on it due to extra body weight. No medicines and no tests needed now. Do get back here later after a month of diet and exercise.

avoid spicy n hot foods...ur suffering from acid reflux...take more more organic diet . for now start on PPI and antacid gel...make life style changes n dietary modification for long-term benefits

Obesity can directly cause snoring problem and difficulty to breathe. You need to exercise a lot and control your diet. Make friends and spend time with them. If you need to speak with someone personally, you can always contact me. Tips to reduce anxiety and stress 1. Sleep well and regular. Irregular sleep can have some serious consequences. It affects both our physical health and also contributes to anxiety and stress. Anxiety as such also leads to disruptions in sleep. When feeling anxious, always try to get a full 7 to 9 hours of uninterrupted sleep and it can work wonders to improve your condition. 2. Always keep smiling. Take a quick break in between your hectic work to get some laughs with your friends. Laughter can reduce depression and anxiety and has proven benefits. 3. Tidy up your living space or workspace. Keep your things clean and clutter-free. That helps us think clear and thus reducing levels of anxiety. 4. Say thank you often. Expressing your thanks for something helps reduce anxiety. 5. Eat smart. Eating more of foods which are rich in vitamin b and omega-3 fatty acids and also healthy whole grain carbs. Vitamin b contributes to good mental health. While omega 3 fatty acids help with both depression and anxiety. Whole grain foods boost serotonin and helps us remain poised. Eating high-sugar content food and processed foods can increase levels of anxiety. 6. Learn to breathe well and relax. Short, shallow breaths arise when you are tensed. So consciously breathing deeply, plus increasing the duration and depth of breathing helps relax the body and mind to a great extent. 7. Meditate. Meditation has so many positive effects on stress, mood, and anxiety. Club meditation with positive thinking to improve your general well-being and overall health. Yoga is also very effective to take off stress from the body and mind by deep relaxation and breathing techniques. 8. Chill and be silent. Reduce the noise and clutter talk that contributes to anxiety. Find time for yourself and be alone to muse upon your own matters without anyone disturbing you. 9. Worry. Yes, we can cause ourselves to freak out, but only for a certain amount of time. When something weighs heavily on your mind, or you believe something terrible is most definitely going to occur, commit to only creating that worry for 20 minutes. Think of all the possible outcomes of the scenario, figure out some game plans, and then quit thinking about it after 20 minutes go by. Have a friend call after the allotted time has passed to avoid the temptation of going over the time limit. Or schedule some of that playtime right afterward. 10. Plan for the future but do not worry about it. Make time tables and to-do lists so that you will not be worried about finishing stuff and so that you can increase your productivity. 11. Be positive. When you feel anxious, train your mind to think and feel positive and give reinforcement to yourself that you can handle any situation. This will significantly reduce your stress and anxiety symptoms. 12. Smell relaxing stuff. Go out to your garden. Smell a fresh rose. Take a deep breathe and allow the relaxation to course through your whole body. You can also use relaxing aroma therapy and use it indoors. 13. Go out and spend time with your friends and family. Spend time with your pets social support reduces anxiety and stress to such a great extent that it is almost always bearable. So next time you get on your nerves, go out with your friends, chat with them, watch a movie, spend some time watching the waves in the beach with your partner, talk to your siblings.

Your symptoms are suggestive of acid peptic disease.(acidity) do you smoke / have a lot of spicy foods / consume alcohol / under a lot of stress / drink a lot of beverages? if your answer to any of the above questions are yes then you need to discontinue it as early as possible. Taking an anti acid tablet (proton pump inhibitor) will help in relieving you of your symptoms.

Hi I am suffering from mild dry cough with throat irritation for the last 1 month, it started from 11th October then took some medicines then it subsided again after few days it started again. Mild coughing happens in the morning then in the afternoon and finally at night. Strangely during rest of the hours it appears as of I don't have that trouble. So pls advice why it's happening and a suitable remedy.

I have had tinnitus (ringing sound in the ears) for 2 years now. I have tried many doctors since than but absolutely no improvements. Is there a cure for tinnitus in medical science? I have been listening to white noises in silence of the night in order to sleep.
