Tomato Ketchup - Is It Good Or Bad For You?

Tomato Ketchup - Is It Good Or Bad For You?

Be it french fries, burgers, hash browns or simple omelet, the taste of ketchup can complement everything. This popular and inexpensive red colored condiment is regarded as healthy by some even though that does not indicate you can consume copious amount of it.

Is ketchup good for health?
Ketchup is a low-calorie condiment made from simple ingredients like spices, salt, pepper, vinegar and tomatoes. Compared to other notable rivals like mayonnaise, ketchup contains no fat and has lesser calories. But for some people, the sugar and salt content of ketchup is a matter of concern. Moreover, it tends to contain natural flavoring, tomato concentrate and most importantly, high fructose corn syrup which may not be desirable. So, the key here is not to abandon ketchup on the whole but to reduce the consumption.

Ketchup and its list of benefits:
The lycopene content of the tomato, which is the prime ingredient of ketchup, cuts down the risk of cancer in bladder, lungs, stomach, and cervix by several degrees. So, eating about two or more servings of tomato ketchup in a week can do you more good than harm. Lycopene, an important antioxidant can shield the body from free radical damage.

Moreover, ketchup is a low-fat condiment that can make bland foods taste great. It has low carbohydrate content, good levels of vitamins and is thought to help fertility in men. But there is a trick to this, most of us use commercially produced ketchup which is easily available in the market.

Is it really good for you?
When you use commercially prepared ketchup on the food, you could be consuming high fructose corn syrup or HFCS since this is what glugs out of the jar. In most cases, you will find that the ketchup contains overcooked tomatoes, a huge amount of sugar which is genetically engineered corn syrup and of course, water. Some brands may also use natural flavoring which is nothing but flavor-boosting chemicals.

Just a teaspoonful of ketchup contains about 4 grams of sugar and needless to say, some people take more than one teaspoon at a time which builds up the daily sugar load. HFCS is added to almost all preserved foods along with a lot of flavor enhancers, and together they don’t take much time to overload you with the maximum daily fructose limit.

Ketchup can be an excellent addition to your main diet when taken in moderation, of course. But with regular consumption, you are sure to head towards a host of unwanted diseases and complications. If you are not able to trust any of the easily available brands, you may consider making your own tomato ketchup and savor the taste. Consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Hell lybrate user- this might be due to following reasons so try to avoid them- a) sleeping in day time. B) going to bed late (generally after 10 pm). C) lack of hair oiling. D) excessive intake of spicy and fried diet and less intake of sweets. Avoid these reasons and use mahabhringraj hair oil for head massage daily before going to bed, you will get relief quickly.

The answer depends on the person. Masturbating more than once in a day is not necessarily a problem. But when the activity becomes compulsive; interferes with one’s work, social life, and relationships; or irritates the genitals, it is time to talk to a healthcare provider or see a sex therapist.

Avoiding Penis Problems - Spotting the Signs of Testicular Cancer

MD - General Medicine
Sexologist, Delhi
Avoiding Penis Problems - Spotting the Signs of Testicular Cancer

In the world of penis problems, one looms large in the fears of men: testicular cancer. Horror stories abound about men who wound up with testicular cancer, including some high-profile individuals: Lance Armstrong is the first to come to mind for most, as well as figure skater Scott Hamilton and comedian Tom Green. The good news is that proper penis care that includes monthly checks of the testicles can go a long way toward spotting changes early, and thus getting a man in for treatment if anything is detected.

How to look for testicular cancer

Knowing and recognizing the signs of testicular cancer are the most important parts of a testicular exam. A man should take the time to become very familiar with this particular set of balls, so that he will have no problem noticing changes in the future. The first few times he does this exam, it's all about getting that familiarity. Once he knows everything there is to know about the way his testicles feel, he can go about looking for the signs of testicular cancer at every new exam.

A self-exam should be done at least once a month. Here's what a man should look for:

1. Changes in size. There should be no variation in size of the testicles from one month to the next. If it seems that one side (or both) is growing, swelling or otherwise changing shape, that could be a red flag that something is wrong in there.

2. Changes in hanging. How the boys hang could also be a factor to watch. Looking in the mirror every now and then to make sure they look the same is a good idea. It's normal for one testicle to hang lower than the other. However, if one hangs much lower or they otherwise look different, pay attention.

3. Changes in lumps or bumps. Some men will have lumps or bumps in the sacks, and that's normal. In fact, one such area might be the tiny tube that carries sperm - it sometimes feels like a pea or marble between the fingers. Remember, the key here is to look for changes. If there is a particular lump that has been there for years but never changed, it's probably nothing. But if that lump does start to change, then it could be something.

4. Changes in softness. The testicles should be soft and spongy when a man pulls on them. They shouldn't feel hard, waterlogged, or otherwise filled with fluid. If it seems they just don't feel right, see a doctor to get a professional opinion.

5. Changes in pain. A testicular exam shouldn't cause pain. A man should be able to roll the skin between his fingers, feel along the underside of the scrotum, poke and prod while looking for lumps or bumps, and even squeeze the area without any discomfort. If he suddenly feels pain or discomfort while doing these things, that's a sign that he needs to get checked out.

6. Changes in the penis. Testicular cancer can also show up in penis changes. One of these is discharge of a clear or yellow substance from the penis when the testicles are manipulated. This could indicate something going on in there, or it could also indicate some sort of infection in the penis itself. This type of discharge always warrants a doctor's visit.

A man should take care to do a self-exam at least once per month. He can help along his penis health and get a casual exam in while using a top-notch penis health crème (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil, which is clinically proven mild and safe for skin) on a daily basis. Look for a crème that contains Shea butter and vitamin E for softness, as well as alpha lipoic acid, an antioxidant that fights against free radicals. This great combination can help improve penis health and offer peace of mind for those worried about penis problems.

I am not a sugar patient to prevent diabetes I can use sugar free tablet. Please answer me.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

I am not a sugar patient to prevent diabetes I can use sugar free tablet. Please answer me.
Mr. Lybrate-user, to prevent diabetes one has to adapt a modified lifestyle. Which means maintain near normal weight, exercise daily for 1 hour or more, take restricted diet giving exact calories based on ideal body weight. Avoid too much of sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, sweetened aerated drinks, sweet corn syrup containing products, high fat milk products and highly processed products. Sugarless tablet alone are not much of help.

Why do we get mouth ulcers regularly? please help me with some of the precautions.

BDS (Gold Medalist)
Dentist, Gurgaon
Dear lybrate user, mouth ulcers could be due to multiple reasons like stress (the most common and important one), vitamin or nutritional deficiency, anemia, eating excess fried food, dehydration etc. Establishing the exact cause in case of frequent or non-healing ulcers is important. Normally, they heal in 7-14 days time. Drinking plenty of fluids and water, eating fruits, salads and vegetables, avoiding oily/fried food, developing a healthy smoke-free, alcohol-free lifestyle and staying stress-free are some of the precautions.
