What are the symptoms of migraine and flu and dengue and what precaution should be taken to avoid this and try to be safe and what are symptoms of migraine and what to do.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
The main symptom of a migraine is usually an intense headache that occurs at the front or on one side of the head. The pain is usually a severe throbbing sensation that gets worse when you move and prevents you from carrying out normal activities. Avoid triggers. If certain foods or odors seem to have triggered your migraines in the past, avoid them. Reduce your caffeine and alcohol intake and avoid tobacco. In general, establish a daily routine with regular sleep patterns and regular meals. In addition, try to control stress. Exercise regularly. Regular aerobic exercise reduces tension and can help prevent migraines. If your doctor agrees, choose any aerobic exercise you enjoy, including walking, swimming and cycling. Warm up slowly, however, because sudden, intense exercise can cause headaches. Obesity is also thought to be a factor in migraine headaches, and regular exercise can help you maintain a healthy weight or lose weight. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms: fever* or feeling feverish/chills. Cough. Sore throat. Runny or stuffy nose. Muscle or body aches. Headaches. Fatigue (tiredness) try to avoid close contact with sick people. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu. Symptoms include severe joint and muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, headache, fever, exhaustion, and rash. The presence of fever, rash, and headache (the" dengue triad") is characteristic of dengue fever. Because dengue fever is caused by a virus, there is no specific medicine or antibiotic to treat it. For typical dengue fever, the treatment is directed toward relief of the symptoms (symptomatic treatment). The prevention of dengue fever requires control or eradication of the mosquitoes carrying the virus that causes dengue. There is currently no vaccine to prevent dengue fever.

Poor Sleep and Stress Can Hurt Your Sex Life

PhD Human Genetics
Sexologist,
Poor Sleep and Stress Can Hurt Your Sex Life

Apart from affecting your memory, health and looks, sleep deprivation can lead to decreased physical intimacy as well. People who have trouble sleeping often face difficulty in coping with their relationships, as with almost all aspects of their lives. Similarly, in the modern world of continuous work pressure and fast paced lifestyle, stress generally takes away all the energy required to enjoy a fulfilling sex life.

The following are some of the ways chronic sleep disorders and stress may affect your sex life:

  1. Mood swings: Sleep disorders often lead to perpetual mood swings. It can make a person grumpy and quarrelsome. If you're sleep deprived, you may get very agitated even by minor stress. This can hurt interaction between you and your partner, leading to a disruptive relationship in the bedroom.
  2. Anxiety: Increased levels of anxiety and stress attributed to lack of sleep can lead to loss of sexual function and even sexual disorders at times. Lack of sleep generally decreases your experience of positive emotions, which may lead to pessimism and subsequently lack of sexual interest.
  3. Decreased social activity: Lack of sleep may decrease your likelihood of engaging in social interactions. People with sleep disorders usually avoid social engagements, as they believe it may disrupt their sleep patterns. They rearrange their sleeping patterns by avoiding social interactions, which leaves them with lesser opportunities to meet with people of the opposite sex, thereby affecting their sex lives.

So, what you should do?

  1. Focus on getting rid of other stressful issues from your life: Common tensions of your daily life and everyday issues like the normal household chores, and your duties and responsibilities towards your family often leave you too exhausted to spend time with your partner. Moreover, getting preoccupied with social commitments also minimises the time available for just the two of you.
  2. Go to sleep and wake up at roughly the same time everyday to tune your sleep cycle. Avoid waking up late into night as far as possible.
  3. Avoid afternoon sleep or take only a nap.
  4. Don't take heavy foods, big and late meals.
  5. Eat at least 2-3 hrs before sleep.
  6. Avoid coffee and tea in the night.
  7. Don't get glued to the tv, computer, or mobile till sleep time. Shut them down 30 mins. before retiring to bed.
  8. Read something calming, meditate, or listen to quiet music just before sleeping.
  9. Regular workouts helps you get good sleep.
  10. Avoid serious discussions, work or complex decisions 2-3 hrs before sleep. If any of them bother you much, jot them down on a paper. That will lighten your mind help you get better sleep.

If sexual problems and concerns make you sleepless, seek help from a sex counselor. If your sleep problems are due to work in shifts or night-only shifts, take the help of a specialist in sleep problems. This way you can overcome sexual problems arising out of sleep disturbances, and have an improved sex life.

I am 39 years old male. I have Restless legs syndrome from last 3 months.

MPTh/MPT, BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist,
Every night elevate your legs from one to four hours before going to bed. (Four hours is a really long time – but if your symptoms are severe, this is where you would start, and then wean back as your symptoms subside.) While your legs are elevated pump your ankles up and down, slowly. (When you push your ankle down, slightly curl your toes. When you lift your ankle up, slightly fan your toes.) Pump your ankles 100 times an hour. (Remember – Exercise should always be comfortable. If it hurts, modify the program.) The above exercise program may be all you need to do to eliminate your symptoms. If not, to further help resolve your complaint, add any of the following and see how they help; While your legs are elevated, tighten and relax your knees 50 -100 times an hour. Walk, Run or Bicycle x 30 minutes when you get home from work. Soak in a tub of cool bath water for 20-30 minutes. Have someone massage your feet and legs every night – preferably a circulation massage, where they try to gently push the fluid in your feet and lower legs up towards your heart.calf and hamstring 5-10 stretches before going to sleep, hot or cold bathing before bed, and the performance of mental activities, such as video games, knitting or conversation.30 minutes on a treadmill in the evening may be a great tonic.

I am 20 year old and have migraines for last 1 months. I have used pain relief ointment cream for couple of days but haven't got any relief. What should I do now?

BHMS
Homeopath, Surat
Migraine headache is characterized by unilateral pulsating headache associated with nausea/vomiting and photo phobia / phonophobia. There are triggers for migraine like sun exposure, certain foods or smell, lack of sleep, excess caffeine etc. The triggers are variable for different patients. Migraine attacks can be managed by simple painkillers like paracetamol but in resistant cases drugs like sumatriptan may be needed. For frequent episodes of migraine preventive medications are to be taken by prescription. There are various medicines available for this and if control is not achieved with one medicine another drug is to be added. Don't take painkillers daily for migraine headaches, it's better to take the preventive medicines. Painkillers on long term basis can further aggravate the migraine headache into medication overuse headache (read my health tips on medication headache) follow these lifestyle changes to avoid migraine headache 1. Maintain regular sleep wake cycle, even on holiday's. 2. Don't skip meals. Take regular healthy diet with adequate fluids 3. Do not consume excess caffeine / carbohydrates / alcohol or smoke. 4. Exercise daily (aerobics and cardiovascular) 5. Identify your headache trigger and try to avoid it. 6. Do pranayam daily. All said and done, one suggestion: please have a thorough discussion before starting off on some medication on your own. Each body is unique and will respond differently to different formulations. With homeopathy, the aim is to treat the individual holistically instead of just removing the symptoms.

My mother was suffering from brain tumor and after the operation tumor was in grade 1 according to the biopsy report and operation has done in 2013 and after the operation two times mri has conducted and according to the mri report tumor was not increased. My first query is that if the tumor is in grade 1 that will be permanently cured or not. And if it is not permanently cured then what is chances or how long patient will be survived.

DM - Neurology, MD - General Medicine, MBBS
Neurologist, Chennai
Grade 1 tumor is relatively less aggressive. If the tumor was completely removed during the surgery and there was no recurrence even after 2 years, it is less likely to be a problem in the future. However you have to be vigilant and have regular follow up with your Neurologist.
