Infertility In Men And Women - What Really Causes It?

Infertility In Men And Women - What Really Causes It?

What causes infertility?

It is important to understand what fertility is for a person or couple to know when it is time to seek help. Infertility refers to the inability to conceive after having regular unprotected sex for a period of 12 months or so. The complex process of ovulation and fertilization need to work right in order to become pregnant.

The common disorders that cause infertility in male and female are listed below:

Causes of male infertility

1. Abnormal sperm production

This can be due to various problems like undescended testicles, genetic defects, health problems including diabetes, infections such as mumps, chronic urinary tract infection especially e. Coli or surgeries on the testicles. Enlarged veins in the testes increase blood flow and heat, affecting the number and shape of sperm.

2. Problems with delivery of sperm

This can happen due to sexual problems, such as premature ejaculation, retrograde ejaculation (semen entering bladder instead of emerging through the penis during orgasm), genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, structural problems such as blockage of the part of the testicle that contains sperm or injury to reproductive organs.

3. Overexposure to certain chemicals and toxins

These can include radiation, pesticides, tobacco smoke, alcohol, marijuana and steroids. Frequent exposure to heat can also elevate the testicular temperature, impairing sperm production.

4. Damage related to cancer

This includes radiation and chemotherapy. Cancer treatments can impair sperm production. Removal of one testicle due to cancer may also affect male fertility.

Causes of female infertility

1. Ovulation disorders

This prevents the ovaries from releasing eggs. Examples include hormonal disorder (PCOS, hypothyroidism, hyperprolactinemia), excessive exercise, eating disorders, injuries, cysts be it follicular or endometriotic and ovarian tumors.

2. Uterine abnormalities

This includes problems related to the opening of cervix or abnormalities in the shape of the uterus which includes arcuate or septate uterus or any congenital anomalies like bicornuate uterus or uterine didelphys. Fibroids may distort the uterine cavity interfering with implantation of fertilized egg. Adenomyosis or endometriosis of the endometrium is one the common causes of early infertility.

3. Fallopian tube damage

This usually results from infection of the fallopian tube by a pelvic inflammatory disease caused by sexually transmitted infection, endometriosis or adhesions.

4. Thyroid problems

Disorders of the thyroid gland, either too much thyroid hormone or too little can interrupt the menstrual cycle, leading to infertility in the long run.

Hi thank you for using Lybrate. There is nothing to worry about as she had taken OCP (oral contraceptive pill). The irregular period is a result of taking ocp so pls ensure tht she wil not take ocp regularly as it will affect her health. Give her homoeopathy medicine senecio aureus 30 five pills one dose, along with jonosia asoka mother tincture 5 drops in 10 ml water two timez a day for three days she will get her normal period.

As per my last period cycle It's of 29 days. I had unprotected sex with my husband on the day after ovulation as per my tracker (is on day 17) & on day 21. Do I have any chances of getting pregnant? What are the symptoms of this early pregnancy? Can I do a home pregnancy test tomorrow?

Hi lybrate-user. Yes chances are there. No specific symptoms are there, some have slight increase in body temperature, changes in mood, tenderness of breast, changes in skin color etc but other hormonal conditions may mimic same. No home test is there which can tell the pregnancy in just 2-3 days after sex. please consult a gynecologist.

No Tobacco Day Special: 6 Deadly Chemicals in Cigarettes That Are Killing You Slowly!

MBBS, DNB - Respiratory Medicine
Pulmonologist, Bangalore
Play video

Tobacco kills irrespective of religion, culture, gender and age. Thus, in order to create awareness regarding the hazardous effects of consuming tobacco an initiative was started in 1987 by the World Health Organization.

Tobacco is the chief ingredient of cigarette and there are over 4000 chemicals compounds created by burning cigarette, 69 of those are known to cause cancer as well as damage the heart and its blood vessels! 6 of these chemicals and their actual usage and side effects are listed below:

  1. Nicotine: A naturally occurring chemical in tobacco, which when reaches your brain triggers adrenaline, by increasing your blood pressure and gives you a high. It is a chemical which makes you addictive to cigarette.

  2. Arsenic: A common chemical used in rat poison. Exposure to high levels of arsenic can be fatal. Over time, it accumulates in smokers’ bodies and can lead to liver and kidney damage, irregular heartbeat and shortage of red and white blood cells.

  3. Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is a colorless, strong smelling chemical which is used to preserve dead bodies and is found in cigarette smoke. Short term exposure to it can cause nausea, skin irritation and burning in eyes, nose and throat, it is a lesser known fact that long term exposure to it can cause cancer.

  4. Benzene: A flammable liquid commonly found in gasoline, coal tar and crude oil. Long term exposure to Benzene decreases red blood cells, damages bone marrow and increases your risk of blood cancer (leukemia).

  5. Polonium: A highly radioactive substance and regular consumption can cause diarrhea, vomiting and hair fall. Over time it causes severe damage to kidney and liver along with your DNA.

  6. Cyanide: The most lethal type of poison, which prevents the body to use and absorb oxygen when inhaled.

Would you still want to hang till death? I doubt. It’s never too late to quit! Seek help now on Lybrate. Share this with your friends and family to spread awareness about how deadly every single cigarette is.

Yes definitely. Beetroot is rich in folic acid that is essential during pregnancy for the growth of baby and prevention of defects in him/her. Beetroot rich in folic acid helps in the growth of spinal cord in baby. It also helps in protecting the baby from taking up the spinal cord defect.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome And Its Symptoms!

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrom is a painful condition of the foot caused by pressure on the posterior tibial nerve. This nerve passes along a passage called the tarsal tunnel just below the bony bit on the foot.
Symptoms include pain which is often described as a burning pain radiating into the arch of the foot, heel and the toes. Pins and needles or numbness may befelt in the sole of the foot. Pain may be worse when running or standing for long periods of time and often worse at night. Sometimes it is initially mistaken for plantar fascitis which also causes pain from the inside heel and throughout the arch of the foot.

I had sex for the first time 4 or 5 days back. And there's some white discharge coming all the time. It doesn't smell bad or something. No irritation. Just white discharge. What is it?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
If the discharge is causing itching or fowl smell then it is some kind of infection, which should be treated immediately. If there is no itching or fowl smell then it has to be physiological leukorrhoea, which occurs because of hormonal imbalance. If the discharge does not stop within few days then you can use clingen pessary which will relive vaginal infection if any.
