Hi lybrate-user Eat with your eyes and your mind Make sure your dinner table has a spread of colours like yellow, green, red, orange, white. Add a lot of different fresh seasonal vegetables, raw salads and herbs. This will not only be pleasing to your palate by providing a burst of flavour but will also give it an aesthetic appeal, so the meal doesn’t look boring and monotonous. While you sit to eat, do not just shove the food in your mouth and gulp it down. The idea is to go slow, and enjoy the entire experience, relish your food as you chew it properly to enjoy every flavour in every bite. Focus on what you are eating the texture, the visual appeal, the aroma of the dish. Eating mindfully will make it an enjoyable experience while assisting in better digestion, make you feel more fuller by avoiding overeating and prevent a lot of stomach distress like gas, bloating or acidity Take small portion Eating a smaller portion of food at a time helps in the breakdown of the food in an effective way so that the entire calories obtained from the food are used up by the body for all the bodily functions. When you eat a large meal, the excess energy which goes unused by the system gets stored as fat and causes weight gain. A good idea would be to use smaller plates so the plate looks fuller and psychologically makes you feel that you have eaten enough while eating from a larger plate makes you pile up your plate with more food which in turn makes you eat more calories. Fill up your stomach only up to 80% We have been raised to eat until we are absolutely full so we don’t feel hungry later. Either that or because traditionally Indian consider it a taboo to leave any food on the plates so we eat off the kids plates because he/she won’t eat anymore, also we have seen our moms finish the leftover paratha or grab an extra spoon rice even if they are not too hungry, just so that they don’t have to throw it away as they are usually the last ones to eat. Not realising how much damage we are doing to our bodies by eating more than what our body needs. However, it is better to stuff ourselves and only eat until we feel adequately full. Yes, you will feel hungry after few hours and that ok. It only means less pressure on your intestines and delaying the ageing process of the cells which can prevent heart attacks, diabetes and cancer. Eat small snacks every few hours. Having said that eating till you are 80% full will make you hungry for more, it is a good practice to eat 5-6 meals a day instead of the traditional 3 meal pattern of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Eat a healthy snack like a fresh whole fruit or nuts like almonds, walnuts, unsalted peanuts, pumpkin seeds, low fat curd or unsalted chaas, hard boiled eggs between main meals every 2-3 hours. This will help to keep you burning more calories throughout the day as the digestion process continuous to keep your metabolism up and running. Also, your body will thank you for feeling light and energetic throughout the day because of the regular supply of an array of nutrients and maintaining your blood sugar levels Have a light supper or dinner As they say, Eat breakfast like a King, Lunch like a commoner and dinner like a popper it is important to start the day with a filling wholesome breakfast to kick start your metabolism and taper down your meals as the sun goes down. Your last meal should happen atleast 3 hours before your bedtime so the body has enough time to digest the meal properly before you go to bed. If you eat a heavy meal too close to bedtime, the body cannot digest it properly leading to indigestion, acid reflux, disturbed sleep making you wake up next morning feeling sluggish and tired. As the day goes the body tends to slow down and to go into a repair and recovery mode to heal the body from the days stress and wear and tear. Also, since we are not physically active in the night time all the excess calories get stored as fat in the body Eat vegetables first Vegetables are full of fibre and when you consume them first, this fibre helps to cover whatever is eaten after and inhibits insulin spikes and the speed at which sugar is transported into the blood. Proteins such as fish, chicken, paneer or sprouts are harder to digest when they are eaten first and everything else eaten after would take time making you feel bloated. Raw vegetables contain a digestive enzyme that helps break down proteins. Eat more fiber Eating more fiber, makes feel fuller, can increase satiety and makes you lose weight. Make sure you eat about 3-4 servings of fruits and vegetables, raw or cooked throughout the day Reduce sugar as much as possible Tips for quick weight loss \ blogs \ Just for Hearts Tips for quick weight loss \ blogs \ Just for Hearts To achieve a flatter belly, make sure you have as low as zero grams of sugar. Opt for healthier natural sweetener such as honey, dates, dates syrup, figs but don’t overdo it. Add chopped strawberries or other fruits like apples, pear to your morning oatmeal to satisfy the sweet tooth. Adding a little cinnamon or ilaichi to your food and coffee or tea also add some flavour and helps to maintain your blood sugar levels Tea is key Green tea has zero calories and is loaded with antioxidants that helps to clear the system of any toxins and help in digestion of the food consumed. The catechin found in green tea have been proven to increase your metabolism even when you are not physically active which makes it an excellent alternative to your regular chai or other creamy beverages. Drink up Gustling down water is indeed the easiest thing you can do for your body to lose the love handles. Your body needs water in order to efficiently metabolize stored fat. When you shortchange your supply, you’re likely to slow down that process, meaning it’s more difficult for you to burn calories. An easy breezy eight glasses a day (at least!) will keep your system running smoothly. One study showed that drinking a half liter (17 oz) of water about a half an hour before meals helped dieters eat fewer calories and lose 44% more weight. Indulge in moderation Once in a while it is fine to go easy and treat yourself to a favourite food like a cheesy pasta or a sinful dessert provided you have been good with your diet all week Count your calories There are studies showing that keeping a food diary and writing down what you eat, or taking pictures of all your meals, can help you lose weight. Anything that increases your awareness of what you are eating is likely to be useful.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a complex immune?mediated disease and is a common disorder that affects men and women equally.

Although it can begin at any age, the peak times for disease onset are young adulthood (ages 20 to 30 years) and late middle age (ages 50 to 69 years).

There are multiple clinical subtypes of psoriasis. Plaque psoriasis, the most common presentation of psoriasis, most commonly presents with sharply defined erythematous plaques with overlying silvery scales. The scalp, extensor elbows, knees, and back are common locations for plaque psoriasis lesions.

Psoriatic arthritis occurs in about 30 percent of patients with psoriasis, and precedes the skin manifestations in approximately 15 percent of patients.

A diagnosis of psoriasis can be made by history and physical examination in the vast majority of cases. Occasionally, a skin biopsy is needed to rule out other conditions.

Numerous topical and systemic therapies are available for the treatment of psoriasis. Treatment modalities are chosen on the basis of disease severity, relevant comorbidities, patient preference (including cost and convenience), efficacy and evaluation of individual patient response.

Hello Dr. My mother (age - 56 ) is suffering from joints pain and muscles pain since last 2-3 months. The pain is unbearable. She can't walk without holding any support and even can't stand for sometime. Some times she becomes aggressive n speaks very harsh words bluntly. She often forgets many things she has done or spoken. She has thyroid disorder since last 15 years n she was taking a tablet (Thyroxine Sodium Tablets IP, THYROX - 25 ) regularly in the morning empty stomach and she was doing very well with this medication. Now, 3 months before when she had these types of pains we consulted our family physician where her routine checkup had being done on regular basis as directed by the physician. We got some blood tests like Haemogram report, Renal Function, Arthritis Profile, Thyroid Function Test done for it. And the results says : Hemoglobin : 11.3 gm% R.B.C. : 4.18 mill./cu. Mm. W.B.C. : 7820/cu. Mm Platelet. : 3,06,000/ cu. (Automated ) After one hour : 90 mm Serum Creatinine. : 0.99 mg/dl Uric acid : 6.41 mg% RA Test (Quantitative ) : 109.9 IU/ml Serum FT4 Estimation : 14.12 pmol/L Serum U/S TSH Estimation : 12.30 ulU/ml Our family physician proscribed the below medicines for it - Tab Thyrox 50 mcg 1-0-0 empty stomach Tab HCQS 200 (10) 0-1-0 Tab Etova-P 400 (30) 1-0-1 Tab Imutrex 7.5 (4) 0-0-1 every Friday Tab liquid-D3 (4) 0-0-1 every Friday She had completed the course of the above medicines. But there is no result. She has continue her Thyroid Tab as the physician said. We had also consulted other physicians. Some of them said the arthritis problem is because of Thyroid disorder, if she takes Thyroid Tab regularly n do routine checkup regularly then everything will be fine after few months. Some said she needed to take the Thyroid Tab of 50 mcg when she was taking it of 25 mcg. But our family physician never proscribed the 50 mcg Tab before this. Now here is my question Dr. Is/was my mother going under correct/right medication. Is her Thyroid Tab of 50 mcg is okk according to her report I've mentioned above. Shall we go for Ayurveda or naturopathic treatment for her arthritis problem. Give some suggestions for the problem. I will be thankful to you if you can proscribe some medication or remedies or any other treatments for her. Thanks a lot. Regards, Hiral Patel.

Hi hiral first of all you hv given a really comprehensive history, complements ob that. Your mother is suffering most likely from rheumatoid arthritus seeing her high titres ib ra report and history you gv. Immutrex and hcqs are goid tablets but they start working a bit late and immitrex need to be increased gradually. Initially you need to give some dose of low dose steroids to make the former medicines work more effectively. Normal physicians might not be well trained to treat ra, cobsult a rheumatologist of possible, remember natiroapthy and ayurveda does not lead to complete relied unlike allopathy and if you are late joints might undergo destruction nothing will work after that. Many a times naturopathy and ayurveda gives drugs containing gold and lead, steroid powder you can never check because most of time they are self made powders, we do use steroids for ra in allopathy but most of time its low dose, pt knows abt it and we try to stop it as soon as pt gets totally controlled. We monitor regularly also. Also ra is usually a chronoc diseaae, faster you act lesser the meds required in future.

It must be investigated. Get a MRI of the knee. You would probably need arthroscopic knee surgery. It is a very safe procedure with uniformly good results. Don?t ignore it lest it become beginning of a bigger problem Why not discuss with me in a video conference? ( Facility provided by lybrate.com)
