Hello doctor my dog, 2yr old male great dane vomits the food particularly at night. Around 6 hours after having the food which is mainly 3 egg with rice and vegetables - home made food. The food is as it is, undigested this happened twice continuously at night now. And happens once or twice a month (anytime, no time relevance) what should be done. What is better food for him, something we can prepare at home? is it something to do with rice or egg yellow?

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
Great dane is a giant breed, and needs optimal proteins to maintain his health. The food he's currently being offered doesn't appear to fulfill his requirements. You can explore to offer him 650-750gms of boiled boneless chicken + 150gms of overcooked rice in a day. About 4 boiled egg whites can be given as well. Please avoid egg yellow. Alternatively - you can explore offering him giant breed pet food, or a combination of pet food + home cooked food. Regarding vomiting - please check food timings, overdue deworming etc. Hows his stools? you may need to add some meds to enhance emptying of stomach contents down the intestines, if he vomits the food as it is.

You have to make him walk and play a lot and exhaust his energy level so that it obeys you command . Don't worry dogs can be trained in any age no problem.

I have a dog when he gets to sleep he used to take continuous loud breathing while asleep. What could be the possible reason of this thing?

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
Your dog possibly has short nose. May be a pug, boxer or a bulldog. Its called boas. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. If not, then its just called snoring. Due to heavy day activities or overweight or both.

I am having a female dog and it is 4 years old. It was having her menstrual cycle. Its been 22 days as of today and I don't think there is much bleeding. I am not sure of it tho. Today it ran out of the house and got mated with an another street male dog. Now is there a chance of possible pregnancy ? Is there any medicine apart from surgery to use as a contraceptive to drop the pregnancy ?

Nothing should be done till 35 days from today. On 35 th day meet a proper veterinarian, get an ultrasound done. If your dog is getting pregnant, there are safer medicines available, but should be started only after the the ultrasound examination confirms this.

Hello first make it sure to change in feed directly may be problem with your dog, so first start with 1/4 new feed mix with 3/4 of old feed so slowly your dog can change diet. And give vitamin b complex syrup. One spoon in day and night according to weight.

BVSc
Veterinarian,
Foods which are poisonous to dogs.

Most dogs love food, and they?re especially attracted to what they see us eating. While sharing the occasional tidbit with your dog is fine, it?s important to be aware that some foods can be very dangerous to dogs. Take caution to make sure your dog never gets access to the foods below. Even if you don?t give him table scraps, your dog might eat something that?s hazardous to his health if he raids kitchen counters, cupboards and trash cans. For advice on teaching your dog not to steal food, please see our article, Counter Surfing and Garbage Raiding.
Avocado

Avocado leaves, fruit, seeds and bark may contain a toxic principle known as persin. The Guatemalan variety, a common one found in stores, appears to be the most problematic. Other varieties of avocado can have different degrees of toxic potential.
Birds, rabbits, and some large animals, including horses, are especially sensitive to avocados, as they can have respiratory distress, congestion, fluid accumulation around the heart, and even death from consuming avocado. While avocado is toxic to some animals, in dogs and cats, we do not expect to see serious signs of illness. In some dogs and cats, mild stomach upset may occur if the animal eats a significant amount of avocado flesh or peel. Ingestion of the pit can lead to obstruction in the gastrointestinal tract, which is a serious situation requiring urgent veterinary care.
Avocado is sometimes included in pet foods for nutritional benefit. We would generally not expect avocado meal or oil present in commercial pet foods to pose a hazard to dogs and cats.
Bread Dough

Raw bread dough made with live yeast can be hazardous if ingested by dogs. When raw dough is swallowed, the warm, moist environment of the stomach provides an ideal environment for the yeast to multiply, resulting in an expanding mass of dough in the stomach. Expansion of the stomach may be severe enough to decrease blood flow to the stomach wall, resulting in the death of tissue. Additionally, the expanding stomach may press on the diaphragm, resulting in breathing difficulty. Perhaps more importantly, as the yeast multiplies, it produces alcohols that can be absorbed, resulting in alcohol intoxication. Affected dogs may have distended abdomens and show signs such as a lack of coordination, disorientation, stupor and vomiting (or attempts to vomit). In extreme cases, coma or seizures may occur and could lead to death from alcohol intoxication. Dogs showing mild signs should be closely monitored, and dogs with severe abdominal distention or dogs who are so inebriated that they can?t stand up should be monitored by a veterinarian until they recover.
Chocolate

Chocolate intoxication is most commonly seen around certain holidays?like Easter, Christmas, Halloween and Valentine?s Day?but it can happen any time dogs have access to products that contain chocolate, such as chocolate candy, cookies, brownies, chocolate baking goods, cocoa powder and cocoa shell-based mulches. The compounds in chocolate that cause toxicosis are caffeine and theobromine, which belong to a group of chemicals called methylxanthines. The rule of thumb with chocolate is ?the darker it is, the more dangerous it is.? White chocolate has very few methylxanthines and is of low toxicity. Dark baker?s chocolate has very high levels of methylxanthines, and plain, dry unsweetened cocoa powder contains the most concentrated levels of methylxanthines. Depending on the type and amount of chocolate ingested, the signs seen can range from vomiting, increased thirst, abdominal discomfort and restlessness to severe agitation, muscle tremors, irregular heart rhythm, high body temperature, seizures and death. Dogs showing more than mild restlessness should be seen by a veterinarian immediately.
Ethanol (Also Known as Ethyl Alcohol, Grain Alcohol or Drinking Alcohol)

Dogs are far more sensitive to ethanol than humans are. Even ingesting a small amount of a product containing alcohol can cause significant

Hi, since your pet is not responding to the traditional line of treatment for gastric disturbances, I will suggest you to get her blood tests done viz. Cbc, liver function test and most importantly renal function test. This will help you to rule out the extreme scenario, if any. Further, specific line of treatment can be suggested as per the alterations in blood reports. Thank you.

sexual instinct will be there in dog to the core for few months in a year as they are seasonal breeders . they can only have this period only so its better to have a playmate for him at least twice a years or else his aggression would be different as age advances

There are lot anti tick application available in the market like ridd, freedom spray, advantix (spot on), fixotic aersol spray. You can any of them. Ticks are basically management problem and you have to follow regularly any of method. You can also go for antitick shot for heavy infestation.

Is Kennel Cough Vaccine Really Necessary for Dogs?

B.V.Sc. & A.H.
Veterinarian, Bangalore
Is Kennel Cough Vaccine Really Necessary for Dogs?

Many animals receive “kennel cough” vaccines that include bordetella and cpi and cav-2 every 6 to 9 months without evidence that this frequency of vaccination is necessary or beneficial. In contrast, other dogs are never vaccinated for kennel cough and diseases are not seen. Cpi immunity lasts at least 3 years when given intranasally and cav -2 immunity lasts a minimum of 7 years parenterally for cav-i. These two virus in combination with bordetella bronchiseptica are the agents, which are often associated with kennel cough, however, other factors play an important role in diseases (eg. Stress, dust, humidity, molds, mycoplasma, etc.).

Thus, kennel cough is not a vaccine preventable disease because of the complex factors associated with this disease. Furthermore, this is often a mild to moderate self limiting disease. It's just like common cold in humans. A course of antibiotics usually is enough to treat the condition. I generally do not recommend kennel cough vaccines unless dogs are staying in a boarding facility that requires them.

I adopted a 3 months old male Labrador puppy. It is having loose motions now n one episode of vomiting. It is completely vaccinated for first year. I changed its diet from pedigree to home cooked vegetarian food without any spices. What could be the reason?

Veterinarian, Bhiwadi
Sudden food change can be one ofbthe reson of stomach upset. Apart from this othet reason are stomach or inyestine infection, worms or eating unsual things. Kindly get your puppy examined from vet and follow his advice.
