Dr Santosh G Honavar had his basic medical education at the Bangalore Medical College. He was the Best Graduate of the Bangalore University in 1988. He received residency training in Ophthalmology, followed by Senior Residency in Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery and Glaucoma at the Dr RP Center for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi. He was adjudged the Best Resident during his tenure. Dr Honavar further trained in Ocular Oncology and was mentored by Prof Jerry and Carol Shields at the Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, USA. He thereafter established the Ocular Oncology Service at the LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, the first such facility in the country. The comprehensive multispecialty Children’s Eye Cancer Center that he established did pioneering work and came to be recognized as one of the best in the World. Concurrently, was also an Adjunct Professor at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, USA. Dr Honavar currently leads the Medical Services team at the Centre for Sight, and also heads the National Retinoblastoma Foundation and CFS Education. Dr Honavar leads the International Council of Ophthalmology fellowship curriculum development committee and the oculoplasty section of the residency curriculum development committee, while being on its Advisory Board. He is currently the Editor, Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, Chairman, Scientific Committee of the Oculoplastics Association of India and the President of Asia Pacific Society of Ocular Oncology and Pathology.
Dr Honavar has extensively published in peer reviewed journals (over 230 publications) and has written several book chapters, while being a reviewer for all the major journals in ophthalmology and oncology. Dr Honavar’s overall research contributions that have had very significant impact on the diagnosis and management of retinoblastoma and its outcome. The significance of his academic contributions can be gauged by his high citation indices – 4500+ citations, H-index of 34 and G-index of 64 – one of the highest in Ophthalmology in India. He is very active in the publication process, being the reviewer for Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology, JAMA Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Acta Ophthalmologica; IOVS, Orbit, American Journal of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Asia Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology, and Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, Lancet, NEJM etc. He also is one of the active section editors for Asia Pacific Journal of Ophthalmologist.
