Dentist, Kolar
Bad breath can b caused fue to various reasons. Due to smoking n using tobacco products, dental prob such as decay teeth, unclean tongue, gum infections, reduced saliva n dry mouth, ill fitting dentues, salivary gland probs. Other diseases n infections which also cause bad breath r sinus infections, respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis n pneumonia, liver n kidney probs, diabetes, acid reflux from stomach etc. Get scalling done by dentist. Use proper brushing techniques. Brush, floss n use mouthwash twice daily. Massage your gums with your finger tips after brushing. Keep your tongue clean. Rinse your mouth well after each meal. Get your decay teeth filled. Visit your dentist for dental checkups every 6 months to detect n prevent dental probs. Drink plenty of fluids n lime juice. Inspite of these measures if bad breath persists, consult a general physician for further evaluation.

The toothache from cold water may be an indication of cavity in your teeth. Please get a consultation from nearby dentist to get relieved of the problem. No precautions as such but may stop taking cold things, but thats not a solution, its just a way to avoid discomfort.

Why Oral Health in Older Adults Is Important

Why Oral Health in Older Adults Is Important

It is said that oral health is the best indicator of a person's health. A bad oral hygiene translates down to the rest of the organs, reflecting poor health. And, like all other organs of the body, the oral cavity also is aging and therefore, requires extra attention to maintain good health and requires longer time to heal and get back to its original state. So, as the old adage goes, prevention is better than cure.

The following are some reasons why oral health in older patients is very important:

  1. Food and nutrition: Be it a regular decay or rare cases of oral cancer, poor oral health means reduced food intake. In the elderly, the tissues supporting the teeth (periodontium) deteriorates, leading to loosening of teeth and inability to eat and chew food. This gets into a vicious cycle, and for the elderly, good healthy nutrition is very important for overall health. If decayed teeth and weak teeth are not allowing them to eat well, the overall health takes a toll too.
  2. Overall health: Poor oral health is associated with higher incidence of diabetes and heart disease. Also, in diabetics especially, the periodontal tissue is easily affected and prone to infection. This leads to not just tooth mobility, but also root caries. The incidence of abscess and cyst associated with root caries is much
  3. higher than decay in the crown portion of the tooth. The simple logic is that there is more tooth structure covering the crown than the root, and therefore, the decay reaches the pulp a lot more quickly.
  4. Medications and side effects: Dental pain, those who have experienced will swear to be one of the worst pains to go through. And in old age, it is something that is best avoided. So, better oral care and hygiene measures become all the more important. Once pain sets in, the antibiotics and painkillers become necessary, bringing with them a host of side effects.

Simple Management tips:

  1. Brush twice a day using fluoridated toothpaste
  2. Rinse with each meal with a mouthwash is possible, else with plain water
  3. Floss regularly to prevent interdental caries
  4. Routine bi-annual visits to the dentist, especially if you are prone for decay or have dry mouth. Whether it is a small decay or a lesion, the dentist will be able to detect it early and arrest and/or treat it
  5. Don't ignore lumps or sore throat that is persistent
  6. Quit smoking, use of tobacco (if applicable)
  7. Healthy diet that is rich in fiber

To avoid the vicious cycle of dental symptoms and complications and their effect on general health, it is advisable to do some basic hygiene measures.

I am dilip and my has got hurt in his teeth and bleeding has started. What should I do.
Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need cleaning, root canal treatment & capping or splinting depending upon the extent of damage to the tooth.

Hi Gum bleeding is the indication of gum disease known as gingivitis with plaque or tarter deposition. Scaling is the option to get rid of bleeding. You can use crest toothpaste to control plaque deposition. Rinse your mouth with chlorhexidine mouthwash. Take Celin tabs once daily for 15 days.

This is a perfect picture to show on how a cavity started between the teeth where only the floss can clean. The cavity grew all the way down in to nerve which caused the tooth to hurt and could only be treated with either a root canal or to remove the tooth.

Dear doctors, before listen my disease I want to tell that every doctors takes it very lightly but sometimes come in my mind to commits suicide because of this disease. My disease is oral related: 1. Inside my upper lips always I feels like a stripe and a bit swell also. Its make to uncomfortable. And always has to grope there from my tongue. 2. My other disease is between the both uper middle teeth, gums is swell and its makes me always suck air with help of tongue. Since last two year I am facing this problem. I am 28 year s/w engineer. I went to dentist, skin specialist, general physician. They cleen my teeth, suggest to change tooth brush in every 3 month. And skin docter gives me 3 month medicine and injection also. But no comes with relief. Please help me.

MFDS RCPS (Glasgow), MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, BDS
Dentist, Delhi
Hi I think the stripe that you feel is probably a normal structure called the frenum. This structure is present in everyone; maybe somewhat more prominent in some people than in others. I would like you to relax and make a conscious effort to avoid probing the area with your tongue. If you can retrain your tongue, this problem should take care of itself. If you are particularly uncomfortable, you can discuss the feasibility of excising the frenum. You will need to see an oral and maxillofacial surgeon for this. As for the other problem, that too could be either an unusually pronounced frenum extending between the two upper incisors, or probably another normal structure called the incisive papilla. If its the former, the fenum excision should take care of this as well. If it is the latter, the options are somewhat restricted, as outright excision may be less feasible.
