I am suffering from cervical spondylosis mild for last three months. I have taken medication but still there is a clamping pain on my head starting from back and then radiating to different parts. It happens few times during the day. Is it something serious or only due to cervical issues. My blood reports are all normal.

Neck PainThis is cervical pain (neck pain) and that's the reason the pain radiates until the shoulder blades. If you keep ice that would help and along side you can do hot water fermentation. You shall use cervical collar which would help you to reduce the radiating pain ie. Due to the nerve compression. Cervical spondylosis – chronic condition with radiating pain As your rightly said you have to go for traction and also you can do IFT. Please consult the near by therapist for quick relief. Since you have pain for more than 10 years it is suggestible to go for cervical muscle strengthening exercise. Use collar will definitely be helpful for him to maintain the good posture. And also cervical pillow can be used which might make you to have better posture of the shoulder neck and arm.

Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. It would have been better if you had mentioned actual blood glucose valiues like fasting, PP & HbA1c%, BP readings and lipid profile. Because by saying "under control" it is difficult to know what is the situation. From your details it appears to be a problem related to excess weight as with a BMI of 38.2 kgs /M2 you are closer to be morbidly obese. Swelling of lower limbs and other related issues are all linked to it. Thanks.

Caldikind plus 1tab OD x10. Do neck, back & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. You will need other supportive medicines also. Oral corticosteroids and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are equally effective in the treatment of acute gout. Febuxostat (Uloric) and allopurinol (Zyloprim) are equally effective in preventing recurrent gout.

While buying a backpack make sure that it has a padded back, padded, contoured, shoulder and chest straps, a waist belt, compression straps and reflective materials. A backpack will these features will reduce the pressure on the back, distribute the load to the pelvis and prevent the contents of the bag from digging into the back.

My mother is 69 years old. She is suffering from severe sciatica pain on her lower back, thighs and hip area. This pain has been with her for last 3 years now. What shall we do?

MBBS
General Physician, Mumbai
Sciatica pain is called a syndrome. It signifies nerve pain spreading along the back if the thigh from lower back. There may be. Sensation problems of different varieties as well as muscle wasting and weakness in the region where the sciatic nerve is locared. But the mere syndromic diagnosis is not enough as the same symptoms may happen due to sciatic nerve compression like slipped disc. Intra spinal tumour. Local abscess. Bony growth compressing the nerve. Among many. At her age she is likely to suffer from osteoporosis. Vitamin d and calcium deficiency etc. So an mri of the limbo sacral spine will be of immense help. Youay consult van orthopedic surgeon for proper management.
