Colorectal Surgery: How To Be Sure You Really Need it

MS - Surgery, MAMS, Senior Residency , MBBS, Fellow IAGES
Gastroenterologist, Delhi
Colorectal Surgery: How To Be Sure You Really Need it

Colorectal surgery is performed to repair damages that occur in the organs of the anus, rectum, and colon. The damage that takes place in these organs can be the result of problems with lower GI like diverticulitis (a condition wherein pouches known as diverticula in the colon wall become inflamed), cancer and inflammatory bowel disease (a group of intestinal disorders that bring about inflammation of the GI).

Who needs this surgery?

In general, colorectal surgery is an essential treatment option for ulcerative colitis, colorectal cancer, Crohn's disease (an inflammatory bowel disease that gives rise to inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract) as well as certain diverticulitis cases. In such cases, the intestinal tract undergoes major reconstruction.

There are also other bowel problems that may require surgery but not of a serious nature and these are anal fissures, hemorrhoids, bowel incontinence and rectal prolapse. Most of the surgical procedures will aid in repairing tears, get rid of blockages, or make tighter sphincter muscles (muscles that surround openings in the body).

Colorectal surgery is also performed in cases of pelvic floor disorders like rectocele (a condition in which the rectum bulges towards the vagina) and perineal hernia (a hernia that involves the pelvic floor).

At the same time, injury, ischemia or compromised blood supply and obstruction may require the performance of bowel surgery as well. Scar tissue and masses can form within the rectum, clogging the organ and preventing the normal discharge of feces from the body.

Problems like ulcerative colitis (an inflammatory bowel disease that leads to the development of ulcers in the colon as well as inflammation of the area) and diverticulitis can give rise to perforations in the rectum. Surgery is suggested in instances when drugs fail to treat the problem of ulcerative colitis.

Likewise, in the case of recurrent instances of perforations or complications in diverticulitis, surgery may be required to remove the portion of the colon affected.

Hallo, I have this Problem since 2008. Whenever I have anal sex I would have anal Fisher for some days or one and half or two weeks then it would be ok if I would have sex again I would face the same Problem and it would be okay again even without using medication and treatment. I need some advise and treatment.

MBBS, MS - General Surgery
General Surgeon, Hyderabad
The very fact you have anal sex repeatedly albeit with a gap by which your anal canal has dilated to an extent where it gets used to insertion of penis which is larger than the bolus of stool you normally pass therefore you do not have pain as you had in the first instance. This a normal physiological response for which no medicine is required. As you have asked this question to a medical doctor it is imperative on my part to tell you that please do take enough of precautions while engaging in this abnormal sexual exercise. I presume you are aware of such precautions.

My father is suffering from liver cirrhosis. His liver has become fatty liver grade 4, due to heavy alcohol consumption. He has asthama also. Is there any treatment in ayurved for the same(liver cirrhosis), also to stop further scarring of liver and to restore already scarred portion?

Generally condition worsens over the passing time but we have experienced in our career that besides many well known ayd med on ayurveda for long use, you may start punarnavashtak kvath. Its not commonly available but you may search and find out. If you can please find fresh herbs and extract the juice but its difficult. However dried herbs at pansari may be found and decoction may be prepared twice daily. After some pt. Starts feeling relief and symptoms ease. This delays the worsening further. Do not expect total reversal.

Dear lybrate-user, This feeling of your friend is not called farting it is referred to as burping, benching or dyspepsia. It can be normal phenomenon after having a meal or can be related to some pathology. Your friend can try some hot water after a meal for digestion and avoid skipping meals and do regular exercise. If not relieved should take some medication after consulting a registered practitioner.

My mother has gastritis problem since 7 to 8 years she underwent treatment in starting and took medicines but that didn't benefit much. According to reports of endoscopy, she has some wounds in her stomach. As of now, she is not undergoing any treatment. Whenever she feels pain in her abdominal, either she just bears the pain without doing anything or takes any medicine prescribed by doctor. The only thing I want to know what kind of diet plan, living style she can follow that keep it in control without taking medicines or taking very less medicines.
