The Growing Child: 1 to 3 Months

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health
Pediatrician, Hyderabad
The Growing Child: 1 to 3 Months

The Growing Child: 1 to 3 Months

How much will my baby grow?

While all babies may grow at a different rate, the following indicates the average for boys and girls 1 to 3 months of age:

  • Weight: average gain of about 1½ to 2 pounds each month

  • Height: average growth of over 1 inch each month

  • Head size: average growth of about ½ inch each month

What can my baby do at this age?

Close up of mother smiling and looking down at a baby sleeping in her arms

As your baby begins to grow, you will notice new and exciting abilities that develop. Babies at this age begin to relax the tight muscle tone of newborns and begin extending their arms and legs more. While babies may progress at different rates, the following are some of the common milestones your baby may reach in this age group:

  • Some of the newborn protective reflexes begin to disappear

  • Neck muscles become stronger, head bobs then is held erect

  • Turns head from side to side when placed on belly

  • Brings hands or objects to mouth

  • Looks at hands

  • Follows light, faces, objects

  • Listens to sounds

  • Opens and closes hands

  • Holds, then drops a rattle or other object

  • Active leg movements

  • At the end of 3 months:

    • Raises head and chest when placed on belly

    • Beginning to reach hands to objects, may bat at hanging object with hands

What can my baby say?

It is very exciting for parents to watch their babies become social beings that can interact with others. While every baby develops speech at his or her own rate, the following are some of the common milestones in this age group:

  • Begins to imitate some sounds (coos, vowel sounds)

  • Cries become more purposeful and are different for hunger, fatigue, and other needs

What does my baby understand?

A baby's understanding and awareness of the world around him or her increases during this time. While babies may progress at different rates, the following are some of the common milestones in this age group:

  • Knows familiar voices, especially of mother and father

  • Smiles in response to others

  • Responds to social contact, may coo

  • Moves arms, legs, body in rhythm with other's voice

How to help increase your baby's development and emotional security

Young babies need the security of a parent's arms, and they understand the reassurance and comfort of your voice, tone, and emotions. Consider the following as ways to foster emotional security of your newborn:

  • Hold your baby face to face and make eye contact.

  • Talk to your baby with a soothing, animated voice throughout the day while dressing, bathing, feeding, or playing with your baby.

  • Sing to your baby.

  • Give your baby rattles and soft toys with different sounds.

  • Let your baby hear different sounds (for example, wind chime, ticking clock, soft music, or music box).

  • Show your baby bright pictures of black and white images.

  • Hang a mobile with bright objects above your baby.

  • Call your baby by name.

  • Hold your baby during feedings and provide comfort when he or she is distressed and cuddling when happy.

Silver nitrate is the usually given medication for local application in mild burns and scalds. If it's severe it needs systemic antibiotics and local bandage to avoid exposure to the environment.

Hello thanks for the query gain in weight three times of birth weight at 12-13 month of age is quite normal. The growth is very rapid in first few months of infancy but then it gradually slows down. The weight gets doubled of birth weight at 6 month 3 times at one year and 4 times by 2 year of age. I hope you have got the point. Maintain the record of weight and height on growth chart so that you can better assess the growth of child. Regards.

Giving regular food a twist

Mommas dilemma. How to keep the food healthy and interesting for their children. Kids throw a fit when they are served something they dislike.

You could always have an alternative for'unhealthy' food, and create a healthier and nutrition-rich meal.

Try turning the boring roti and sabzi into a vegetable wrap with loads of salad leaves, tomatoes and onions for the crunchiness.

Cheese and butter are a child's weaknesses. So, how do we make it healthy? for children, any dish with a top-up of cheese is too good to resist. But, you could use paneer instead or if they just can't do without it, try the cheese made from cow's milk.

It's all about giving the regular food a twist, making it look interesting and giving your old recipes a new look. Just a few changes here and there, and you have a healthy version of fast food. So gear up all moms create something healthy n interesting.

Moms are the best cooks after all!

She is too young to worry for all these amd as the child grows there will be change in colour so stop worrying. Also avoid mustard oil as it causes darknes of skin.

My 7 month old baby girl has viral fever and is under paracetamol drops medication. I got her urine routine test done which shows 20-40 WBC/hpf and positive leucocyte esterase. Does this mean that she has UTI or it could be because she already has viral infection.

More then 10 wbcs are suggestive of urine infection. You must start antibiotics immediately after giving early morning urine sample for culture and sensitivity test report of which you will be getting after 48 hours and you must change the antibiotics according to that.

Your concern is jenune, your baby might have hypersensitive airway, just go through a detailed physical examination, respiratory function test. It might be due to environmental exposure of so many allergent, toxic fumes. Yiu just checked your child with pediatric pulmonologist and stick to the treatment. Bcz childhood Asthama is a chronic disease, only prevented no cure. It resolves spontaneously if you prevent its recurrent attack with lifestyle chane, environmental& behavioural modification with some medication.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Symptoms and Treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

I’m Dr. Prashant Shah, a psychiatrist from Ghatkopar, Mumbai. Today I am going to speak about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder also known as ADHD. ADHD as the name suggests the full form is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This is a common disorder seen in children and adolescence and at times may extend also into adult life. The common features of this problem are diminished attention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. As I said earlier, it is most commonly seen in children and adolescents, the usual complaints will be from the parents and teachers. The parents and teachers will complain that these children have difficulty sustaining attention, they are hyperactive and they are impulsive in their day to day activities.

Sustaining attention means that these children cannot sustain or carry out any particular task to the end. They get bored very easily, they will lose interest, they may want to start many activities; they will say that they want to join this activity, they want to do this thing but then halfway down the line they will get bored, and they will stop doing that activity. They would have difficulty in focusing which will result in making careless mistakes in their works, in their calculations, in their day to day works, in their homework. They will be making careless mistakes because they cannot just focus on what they are doing. They get distracted very easily. The teachers will complain that in the school when the teacher is teaching they are looking out of the window or they are speaking with other children. They will drop down their pencil, eraser, and maybe make mischief with other children. Many times there are younger children; they are always on the go. They cannot sit in one place. They are not in their seat; they are roaming around in the class; they talk excessively; they will blurt out answers; they are forgetful; they will not mention about homework or assignment which has been given to them or the project work which has been given. They will inform their parents just at the last minute and then everything will have to be rushed. They will forget or they will misplace their books. Their clothes will be in disarray at home if you visit their room. Everything will be like it is not in its place. They cannot wait for their turn. Now all these are problems which the children-parents pick up.

What is the effect of this on the children? Because of this kind of behavior they are labeled as mischievous. They are the ones who get pointed out whenever something goes wrong in the class. They will be the first ones to be signaled out and given punishment. And at times maybe it is not their fault also but because they show this kind of behavior they are labeled as mischievous and it is they who get the punishment. Everyone ridicules them for this kind of behavior. Even the parents punish them. This will lead to many times frustration, decreased confidence which in turn affects their school performance. Many times this results in deviantju8 behavior. In adolescence if we go on to see this may result in risk-taking behavior, seeking novelties and at times in drug-addiction also.

Now, what can be done about this?
As I said earlier it is a neuro-developmental disorder, we do not know as psychiatry illnesses, we don’t know what the causes are of this illness or why does this illness occur. It may range from genetic to neurological to psychopharmic or neuro-developmental problems in the brain. But what is good is that treatment options are available. So what treatment options are there for ADHD? They are both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments available. Usually for children less than five years initially we advise non-pharmacological treatment. This non-pharmacological treatment is occupation therapy and sensory integration where depending upon the severity of the problem, children are called for occupation therapy sessions, parents maybe also given some home programme which they can carry out at home and this results in improvement. The improvement is slow but carried out religiously, diligently by the parents for a period of 1 year to two years this definitely is going to show improvement.

In other children or if the problems are severe enough, we do start medicines. In children parents are hesitant to start medicines and that too from a psychiatrist. But believe me there are good medicines available for ADHD, they do show response, there are no major side effects. The groups of medicines that are available are stimulants or non-stimulants. Stimulants are the first choice of drugs, usually we start with a low dose, so that the child can tolerate the dose, there is no side effect and then we gradually build up the dose so that the improvement is seen. Even if there is some side effect there is minor side effect which can be always taken care of. It is not that there is only one drug available, the child is not responding, we can definitely shift to some other. But the thing to understand is that treatment is required. This ADHD can be controlled and if the signs and symptoms of ADHD are controlled then the child’s performance is definitely going to improve. It will not only reflect in the child’s studies but also overall development of the child. So it is for the parents and teachers working in this field to find out these kinds of children who maybe having this problem and refer them for treatment.

Thank you. For any further enquiries you can always get me to me through Lybrate

My 1 year old baby gets stomach cramp almost every night. Gripe water does gives little relief. What should I do?
Stomach cramp is a common problem in the first years of child's life. There are other options available like anti flatulent and anti colic medicines. You should have them at home for emergencies such as late night. I recommend you to see a skilled homeopath nearby. You will get effective yet side effect free medicines. All the best.

Dear Doctor, Here I would like to give a short-brief of my son's problem of epilepsy in the following words. He got birth in a private clinic here in Delhi in the month of March 13, 2008. The delivery was normal and on the very next day of discharge from the hospital, he got a fits-like behavior and we immediately took him to the same clinic where he got birth and admitted there. As per the Doctor treating him it was said that his sugar got down and he was not needed properly during the night. After 3-4 days treatment, the doctor referred to another hospital i.e. St. Stephens Hospital herein Delhi and got admitted. After a week’s time the child got recovered. After this, about three years there was no problem with the child. However, after the age of 3, we could noticed that when child was walking he was complaining of some difficulty in walking on his right leg and immediately he asks to pick-up and also noticed a slight behavioural activity on his mouth. This is the starting point and we approached Dr. B.K. Gupta (Neurologist herein Delh). As per his presumption it was epilepsy and started treatment for epilepsy by giving the syrup Trioptal. By taking the above medicine continuously there was no problem for about three years. Unfortunately, after third year the child got fits again intermittently and we again approached the same Doctor and he advised to change the dose of the same medicine. But even though the duration of fits got extended but some time it happened intermittently. In the meantime we approached another Dr. (Prof.) Aldrin (Head of Neuro in IBHAS, Delhi). As per him we got the child’s MRI taken and after diagnosis he also advised to continue the same syrup Trioptal. In the meantime the syrup was not available in the market and the doctor advised to take Oxcarbazepine Tab (300 ml in the morning and 400 ml in the evening) plus Frisium 5 mg tab (one tab in the evening). Now for the last one and a half years there is no problem of fits however he has been complaining of tiredness intermittently, mostly after waking up in morning and also when he was about to leave for school and we presume this might be by taking the medicine continuously. Unfortunately, for the last 2-3 months we could notice another problem i.e. His right hand palm gets trembling (jerking) like feeling for a few second mostly every day and by rubbing and/or holding tight it gets normal and when it happens he is not able to move his fingers or hold anything, and also loose strength of his palm and it gets normal within a minute’s time. Earlier it was once in a week but now-a-days it happens almost daily sometime in the afternoon otherwise at school. Last week i.e. On 16/01/2017 we again visited Dr. Aldrin because of this above new problem. After check-up the doctor advised to get EEG report. However, as per the EEG report it was normal and the doctor advised to increase the dose of the existing medicine i.e. Oxcarbazepine 400 ml tab in the morning instead of 300 ml and continue the other medicine as usual. But even though the above medicine has been taking as per the prescription for the last two week the problem still persists. He has also the problem of Adenoid for the last 3-4 years and now-a-days treating by homeopathy medicine. At night when he sleeps he inhales/exhales through mouth and I am presuming that the above problem is due to this reason only. Kindly, for your advice.

You have not mentioned MRI report. It seems that the low sugar at birth might have left a permanent scar in his head and hence your child is having frequent simple partial seizures. Probably needs either adding a new drug or change of drug. Kindly seek advice from your doctor. Best wishes.

How Homeopathy Helps Manage Child's Health?

How Homeopathy Helps Manage Child's Health?

It has been seen that children absolutely resist taking medicines, especially the conventional kind that may not agree with their sweet craving taste buds. Yet, the sweet pellets of Homeopathic medicines appeal to many children. Also, these drugs are safe and they make use of the body’s defences when it comes to fighting and treating ailments. Read on to know more about improving your child’s health with the help of homeopathy.

Treating Infant Problems: Homeopathic drugs are known to treat a number of infant related ailments like teething and the aches and pains caused by the same, as well as colic and other ailments like ear ache. These drugs are usually quick and effective when it comes to removing the discomfort that the child may be experiencing which can keep the child from turning cranky. These medicines can be used to treat acute and sudden problems as well as long term issues that seem to reoccur often.

Side Effects: One of the most common benefits of Homeopathic drugs includes the lack of side effects for children and adults alike. This quality is especially helpful for children. Let us understand why. The side effects of many conventional medicines may have a direct or indirect bearing on the growth as well as the development of the child’s immunity. With Homeopathy, the child is at no such risk. With its complete lack of side effects, these kinds of medicines ensure that the child’s growth, development and immunity do not suffer. In fact, these medicines are completely safe and are known to use resources from within the body rather than impairing such resources with an intense effect.

Response: Children are known to respond to very well to Homeopathic remedies because their bodies are still not used to the intensity of conventional medication, which makes them more receptive in general.

Various Homeopathic Medicines for Children: Aconite is one of the most widely used Homeopathic drugs that is used for treating sudden ailments like fever, fright, shock and cough or cold, as well. Arnica can also be used for various injuries. Belladona is best used for fever and persistent crying or fretfulness. Borax can be used to cure various digestive upsets. Calendula is also used to treat minor abrasions as well as sun burns as well as scalds and wounds. Chamomilla also helps in treating bedwetting problems for children. One can also use Homeopathic drugs on a regular basis once teething begins so that the child is not prone to fever and fits of crying. Also, children can be given Homeopathic drugs for deworming at least once a year. This will also help to clear out the toxins and build better appetite. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Homeopath.
