How To Deal With Hair In The Summer?

M. Ch. (Plastic Surgery), MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Dermatologist, Delhi
How To Deal With Hair In The Summer?

Summer might be the perfect time to flaunt your beach wave tresses, but you also need to protect them from the scorching sun. The summer sun can make your hair dry and brittle, causing a lot of damage. Here are five tips to keep your hair healthy and beautiful all summer long.

  1. Hydration: In summer you tend to lose too minerals through sweat and this causes dehydration, which in general affects your whole body, making your skin and hair dry and lifeless. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking at least 7-8 glasses of water. Also include lemon water, buttermilk and coconut water in your diet to regain the lost minerals. Eat fruits with high water content such as muskmelon, watermelon, cucumbers and tomatoes to include nutrients in your system.
  2. Protection: Wear a scarf or a stylish hat to match your outfit as well as protect your mane from the sun rays. Preferably use a cotton one and tie it loosely so that it does not hinder circulation.
  3. Use a mild Shampoo: In summers, excess sweat can clog your hair follicles, capturing dirt and bacteria. It is important to use a gentle shampoo that gets the job done without stripping your hair of moisture.
  4. Condition: Use a conditioner to provide texture and strength to your hair. They also lend a coating on the hair that makes it shiny and creates a thin barrier from the sun rays.
  5. Limit styling tools: It is better to avoid heating tools as much as possible because additional heat can dry out your hair shafts. Also, use fewer hair products such as hairsprays and gels because they contain tons of chemicals that can cause damage by clogging the follicles mixed with sweat.

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Hair Transplant Surgeon

Hi lybrate-user, Here are some causes why people would feel cold all the time, along with some treatment options: 1. Anemia: When you are suffering from anemia, the levels of oxygen carrying component in the blood, hemoglobin, goes down. Low hemoglobin level in the blood reduces its ability to carry oxygenated blood into the extremities, thus inducing a chill feeling in the toes and limbs. Most often, it is iron deficiency anemia or Vitamin B12 deficiency anemia that is responsible for such feeling. Correct the condition with appropriate medication and dietary modification to raise your hemoglobin levels. This will help your body temperature to be regulated and make it warmer. 2. Hypoglycemia: Hypoglycemia is low sugar level in the blood. With hypoglycemia, the patient perspires profusely. Acute hypoglycemia can be addressed with small frequent meals that are high in fiber and carbohydrate. 3. Low Body Weight: Feeling cold is common among thin individuals. This is because there is less of fat and muscle mass. Body fat act as insulation and keep the body warm. Muscle activities generate heat which keeps your body warm. If you have lost excess of body weight in recent times or you have always been thin, you may be sensitive to outside temperature that may be comfortable to most people around you. 4. Peripheral Vascular Disease - In this condition, the arteries in the legs become narrow and there is marked reduction of blood flow especially in the hands and toes. Most often, a person suffering from atherosclerosis or a chronic smoker is susceptible to peripheral vascular disease. However, old age and other contributory factors also play an important role in PVD. Treatment involves dietary and lifestyle changes to improve blood flow. Besides, medications to control blood pressure and increased cholesterol will provide additional relief. 5. Hypothyroidism: A condition where there is a decrease in the production of thyroid hormone. The feeling of coldness can be accompanied by unexplained weight gain, sluggishness, constant fatigue, constipation, generalized vague muscular pain, poor appetite and forgetfulness. There is dryness of skin, coarse and dry hair and menstrual disorders when the patient is suffering from hypothyroidism. A simple blood test, TSH, is sufficient to diagnose this problem. Hypothyroidism can be treated with supplementation of thyroid hormones. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Hello, Homoeopathic medicines are less invasive and have more herbal approach towards gaining the weight. There are a number of homoeopathic medicines, which treat the root cause behind the body’s inability to gain weight or bulk up. 1. Take alfalfa tonic (wsi), 2 – 2 tsp. Thrice a day, half an hour before meals. 2. Calcarea phos 200, 5 drops, once in aweek, morning empty stomach for 2 weeks. 3. Take eggs, milk, butter, bananas, potatoes, mangoes, figs, oats, soyabean and dry fruits. 4. Do light exercises regularly to keep your body active. These homoeopathic medicines and dietary addition will increase your appetite and give your metabolism a healthy boost.

You must never stop medication without the doctor's advice. Also. Ideally, you should be on medication and counseling and if you are episode-free for three years, you can be weaned off of it but always with the approval of the doctor. Counseling is very important together with medication.
