IN HYPOTHYROIDISM:--- Deficiency of thyroxine hormone leading to sluggishness, tired feeling, weight increase, slow heart beats, intolerance to cold, swelling of legs, feet and face, difficulty in concentrating and at times in speech. Cholesterol level should be measured at least once every five years in everyone over age 20. The screening test that is usually performed is a blood test called a lipid profile. Experts recommend that men ages 35 and older and women ages 45 and older be more frequently screened for lipid disorders. The lipoprotein profile includes: Total cholesetrol LDL (low-density lipoprotein CHOLESETROL also called "bad"CHOLESTETROL HDL (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also called "good" cholesterol) TRIGLYCERIDES (fats carried in the BLOOD from the food we eat. Excess calories, alcohol, or sugar in the body are converted into TRIGLYCERIDES and stored in fat cells throughout the body. High triglycerides and cholesterol can cause atherosclerotic heart disease or narrowed coronary arteries in the heart can cause the symptoms of angina, when theheart muscle is not provided with enough oxygen to function. Decreased blood supply to the brain may be due to narrowed small arteries in the brain or because the larger carotidarteries in the neck may become blocked. This can result in a transient ischmic attack or stroke. Peripheral artery disease describes gradual narrowing of the arteries that supply the legs. During exercise , if the legs do not get enough blood supply, they can develop pain , called claudication . Other arteries in the body may also be affected by plaque buildup causing them to narrow, including the mesenteric arteries to the intestine and the renal arteries to the kidney. • Try to keep your consumption of saturated fats to a minimum. • Aim to replace saturated fats, with moderate amounts of ‘good’ fats also known as monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. • Grill, steam, boil and bake foods instead of frying and roasting. • Eat plenty of fibre-rich foods. • Enjoy healthy snacks such as fruit, nuts and seeds, olives etc. • Eat at least two portions of fish per week, one of which should be oily (Choose from salmon, mackerel, sardines, pilchards or herring). • Include foods enriched with plant stanols/sterols, which are clinically proven to lower ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. • Stay physically active. at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise on five or more days of the week. • Avoid smoking. • Try and manage your stress levels.  Foods to avoid  Limit saturated fats and oils, such as butter, palm oil, and coconut oil. Instead, use soft vegetable oils, such as olive or canola oil.  Avoid trans fats or partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. These oils go through a process that makes them solid. They're found in some hard margarines, snack crackers, cookies,and chips.  Limit fatty meats such as corned beef, , ribs, steak, ground meat, hot dogs, sausage, bacon, and processed meats . Also limit organ meats like liver and kidney. Replace with skinless chicken or turkey, lean beef, pork, lamb, and fish. Try some meatless main dishes, like beans, peas, pasta, or rice.  Limit meat, poultry, and fish to no more than two servings, or 140 g, a day. Remember that a serving is about the size of a deck of playing cards.  Limit egg yolks.  Limit milk products that contain more than 1% milk fat. This includes cream, most cheeses, and nondairy coffee creamers or whipped topping (which often contain coconut or palm oils). Instead try fat-free or low-fat milk (0% to 1% fat) and low-fat cheeses.  Limit snack crackers, muffins, quick breads, croissants, and cakes made with saturated or hydrogenated fat, whole eggs, or whole milk. Try low-fat baked goods, and use any spreads or toppings lightly.  Instead of using butter or margarine on bread, try dipping it in olive oil.  Avoid fast foods like hamburgers, fries, fried chicken, and tacos. They are high in both total fat and saturated fat. When you eat out, choose broiled sandwiches or chicken without skin, salads with low-fat dressing, and foods that aren't fried. Ask the server to leave off the cheese and high-fat dressings like mayonnaise. Foods that decreasse CHOLESTROL 1. Oatmeal, oat bran and high-fiber foods Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which reduces your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the "bad," cholesterol. Soluble fiber is also found in such foods as kidney beans, apples, pears, barley and prunes.Soluble fiber can reduce the absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream. Five to 10 grams or more of soluble fiber a day decreases your total and LDL cholesterol. Eating 1 1/2 cups of cooked oatmeal provides 6 grams of fiber. If you add fruit, such as bananas, you'll add about 4 more grams of fiber. To mix it up a little, try steel-cut oatmeal or cold cereal made with oatmeal or oat bran. 2. Fish and omega-3 fatty acids Eating fatty fish can be heart healthy because of its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce your blood pressure and risk of developing blood clots. In people who have already had heart attacks, fish oil — or omega-3 fatty acids — reduces the risk of sudden death. I recommend eating at least two servings of fish a week. The highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids are in: • Mackerel • Lake trout • Herring • Sardines • Albacore tuna • Salmon • Halibut You should bake or grill the fish to avoid adding unhealthy fats. If you don't like fish, you can also get small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids from foods like ground flaxseed or canola oil. You can take an omega-3 or fish oil supplement to get some of the benefits, but you won't get other nutrients in fish, such as selenium. If you decide to take a supplement, just remember to watch your diet and eat lean meat or vegetables in place of fish. 3. Walnuts, almonds and other nuts Walnuts, almonds and other nuts can reduce blood cholesterol. Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, walnuts also help keep blood vessels healthy. Eating about a handful (1.5 ounces, or 42.5 grams) a day of most nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachio nuts and walnuts, may reduce your risk of heart disease. Just make sure the nuts you eat aren't salted or coated with sugar. All nuts are high in calories, so a handful will do. To avoid eating too many nuts and gaining weight, replace foods high in saturated fat with nuts. For example, instead of using cheese, meat or croutons in your salad, add a handful of walnuts or almonds. Not just indians, but all nationalities use oil in their daily lives. Only the type varies. As far as indian cooking is concerned, any of the traditionally used oils, in moderation are ok. It depends on what region you are from, your tastes, style of cooking, availability & cost. Eg: here is kerala, we use quite a lot of coconut oil in our cooking, but to someone from north india, it wouldn't sound very appealing as they mostly use it for hair care! but avoid vanaspathi.

I checked my diabetics FBS is 260 and PBS is 379 on 25 february. Today I checked my diabetics fbs is 167 and pbs is 215. And also I checked hba1c is 10.1. What is my status and can I able to control without medicine. Past one month without medicine only I reduce the sugar level. Kindly guide me.

Dear Lybrate user...Propranolol is a beta blocker and is commonly used for migraine prophylaxis. Its recommended dose for migraine prophylaxis can be as high as 120 to 160 mg per day. Its normal action on heart is to decrease the heart rate, but at a dose of 80 mg it is less likely to cause a significant damage. Rest differs from patient to patient and the clinical decision has to be individualized. Take care

Reduce salt in take. Go for a walk for at least 40 minutes. Take your medicine regularly. Never miss it unless your Doctor ask you to do so. Do Kapla bhath and anulom vilom prarnayam for 10 minutes each.

Dear, As you are not diabetic then get urine test and usg (kub) done with full bladder volume, bladder wall thickness on full bladder and post-void residual urine measurement. If urine shows more then 5 pus cells then you have infection and you will have to take antibiotic like ofloxacin 200 mg twice a day 1 hour before meals with water for 15 days and check urine. At the same time if you are retaining urine after urination then you have bladder outlet obstruction more likely to be bladde rneck obstruction or early prostatic enlargement for which you can take tamsulicin 0.4 mg at bed time. Let me know how you go.

Medicine is for life but you can use pomegranade juice/ apple cider vinegar / honey and fresh lemon juice everyday -all of the above or any 1 or 2, because some studies have claimed the benefits about reducing blockages / not making fresh blockages and these are harmless home remedies.

Your reports are normal and there is no need to take anti anxiety tablets. You are underweight. Tell us about your appetite and lifestyle. At 38 menopausal hormonal changes start with declining of hormones. It is called perimenopausal time, means few years before and after menopause wen periods stop totally. Every woman undergoes changes due to hormones but women do live till 100. Get tested for heart also-bp, ecg, echo and stress test. Dear Lybrateuser, - Good to know that you have left smoking as it will help reverse any damage it has caused to your body over a period of time - take a well balanced diet with more of fruits & vegetables especially green leafy ones, protein foods, healthy fats, whole grains - do regular exercise, brisk walking, jogging, swimming for 20-30 min, also do yoga & deep breathing for 10-15 min daily morning for good supply of oxygen & blood circulation in the body - take a tablet of Paracetamol if pain is more - get an x- ray chest & ECG done to rule out any other problem, consult a doctor if not much relief.
