Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Neck pain can be due to some degenerative changes taking place in her neck region. I can dvise her to do: - isometric neck exercises - hot water fomentation at home 3-4 times/day - local analgesic spray application 2-3 times in a day - take adequate calcium and vitamin d supplementation if it does not improve in 2-3 weeks time, then we will have to get x ray cervical spine ap and lateral views and then you can send it across to me. As far as swellings go, usually they can be lipomas as found in a lot of people but get yourself checked up a general surgeon to rule out other swellings. Causes and Symptoms of Avulsion Fracture

A small piece of bone is known as a fragment and it is very common that an avulsion fracture also tends to damage the protrusions of bone to which the tendons attach. This basically means that the tendon or ligament will come away from the bone and it will take a small piece of bone with it. It is sometimes very hard to find out what type of injury you have and this is why knowing the causes and symptoms of an avulsion fracture are very helpful in determining exactly how severe the injury is.

Here are the causes of an avulsion fracture.

Causes:

  1. Explosive Landing: Athletes who tend to jump or land with great impact tend to get these most commonly. Therefore, it is crucial for your health that if you participate in such sports, you do follow the correct method of jumping.

  2. Explosive Extension: Similar to how an athlete landing ferociously can get an avulsion fracture, someone who is extending the legs very violently and explosively during an exercise can also get an avulsion fracture. This is because the bone getting extended could very well damage the protrusions to which the tendons are attached.

Symptoms:

These are the two main causes of an avulsion fracture. There are not many symptoms of an avulsion fracture. This is because an avulsion fracture can only be determined by an MRI or by an X-ray scan. Therefore it is nearly impossible to diagnose that you have an avulsion fracture without looking at the results of the tests performed on the part of your body. However, the way you got the fracture and especially the details of it are very good indications of whether you have an avulsion fracture or not. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Please do a x-ray of the affected area. Do hot compresses. Also take mag phos 6x - twice daily. Avoid sitting/standing too long at a stretch.

Get a few reports done such as USG-Abdomen, ECG of your father. You might find out what the problem is. The swelling can be due to heart or renal problems. These reports will help you find out what exactly is the problem. Then what we can decide what should be done about it.

I am a 33 year old male suffering from severe pain in the knees & slight pain in the joints of hands & shoulders, for the last 15 to 20 days. Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. There are many causes of multiple joint pains in the body. It can be inflammatory in nature, due to an underlying systemmic cause or a generalized deficiency. My advice is to get some blood tests done and send reports across to me: cbc, esr, crp, serum vitamin d, serum electrolytes etc. Let me see these reports and then I can advise you certain measures. 1) do massage with warm sesame oil or suitable oil for 15 min. Afterwards take hot fomentation for 10 min. 2) start natural calcium supplement. 3) do regular stretching exercise 4) in yoga do bhujangasan, halasan & suryanamaskar.

My wife is suffering from severe pain in knee joint. Dr. Has suggested knee replacement after crossing the age of 60 years. She is 58 now. Simultaneously muscle cramp and pain in nerve is becoming intolerable. To meet out mineral deficiency she is taking caldikind plus for last two months but cramps and tense nerve pain is not diluting. Hello. I suppose your wife is suffering from severe knee osteoarthritis for which she has been adviced knee replacement. Muscle cramps can be due to a number of reasons including dehydration, dyselectrolytemia, calcium or magnesium deficiency, overexertion of muscles during day and other neurological disorders. Keep her hydrated with lot of fluids. See a Rheumatologist who would examine and order tests accordingly.

Quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day.

I had an accident, due which I had ligament injury in my knee (swelling) in 2012, I play basketball, after that accident I am unable to perform at my full, I am done with MRI and report says" swelling in ligament" and the doctor said to wear a knee cap and to do some exercises. Foot exercises. Do the following exercises barefoot: •1. First write digits 1 to 10 using your toes raised up in the air. •2. Sit on a chair, raise your toes and curl them •3. Pick up a small piece of cloth off the floor using your toes. •4. Still in a sitting position, point your toes and circle your ankles in a slow counter and clockwise motion. •5. Stand up from the sitting position and go on tip toe for 5 seconds.

Identify the mid point between the ankle bone and tendons and give pressure with a blunt edge on either side of your foot for 2 minutes. Also give pressure in the web between 2nd and 3rd finger from your toe for 2 minutes. Finally give a good massage for both feet in hot water. Identify the dipping portion on the back of your knee folding. Press this dip with both middle fingers and hold your knee with your thumbs for support. Please swing 20 times morning and evenings. Inform after 10 days for further guidance.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. In initial stages, physical therapy and supportive treatment is management of choice. You need to take following precautions: - to maintain proper posture while working and sleeping both for neck and back region. - take short breaks in between your work to relax your muscles. - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc in case you are having back pain. How to avoid shin splint (front lower leg pain)
Shin splints, medically known as medial tibial stress syndrome (mtss), refers to pain in the shins - the front lower legs. It is an inflammatory condition of the front part of the tibia. The pain is brought on by strenuous activity, more commonly in stop-start sports such as squash, tennis or basketball. Running too much on hard surfaces is also a common cause of shin splints.

These tips may help you avoid suffering with shin splints.

-use proper fitting shoes with good support
-make sure the insoles are shock-absorbing. If you have flat feet, good insoles are vital
-avoid hard surfaces, uneven terrain, or slanted slopes
-increase your intensity gradually
-make sure you are warmed up properly before doing exercise.
