How To Get Pouty Lips?

MBBS, MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy
Dermatologist, Hyderabad
How To Get Pouty Lips?

Pout lips are those lips which are full or semi-puckered and can be used to express either real or mock dissatisfaction by pouting. Pouting can be done by pushing one’s lips or one’s bottom lip forward as an expression of annoyance or in order to entice people of opposite sex.

Women at times tend to feel as if their lips darker as compared to their faces. A perfect pink pout is what they desire. There are numerous women all over the world, who have fascination towards giving a pinkish look to their lips, hence making them perfect for pouts.

Some of the recommendations in dermatology, if followed, can result in getting your lips lightened up and make them pout friendly.

Dermatologist Recommended Tips to Get Pout Lips
Women Should Stop Licking Their Lips: A lot of women, with dry lips would have excess skin, which will let the pout have a rough, uneven and discoloured look. This gets even worse, if you start licking your lips. Apparently it would seem as if moistening the lips with saliva would help in moisturising them but in reality, that would make the lips drier. Getting rid of this habit would invariably make the lips look much better over a period of time.

  1. Application of Lip Balm: Applying lip balm on the lips is a much better option, to relieve your lips from getting dry, than to use your own saliva. It will prevent the lips from losing their natural moisture. Lips would also get the much needed hydration. Most importantly, lip balm can be applied as many times a day as possible to get soft, pink lips, worthy of pout.
  2. Lips Should Be Protected From Being Exposed To Sun: Women should always remember that it’s not just the skin, which can get tanned, lips can have the same problem as well. Exposing the lips to sun rays would make them dark in colour and also make them rough. Dermatologists recommend women to use sunblock, in the form of any lip balm and apply that balm on the lips before going out on the sun. Use of SPF30, for at least 5-6 times a day would be ideal to make sure, it does not wear off.
  3. Use of Home-Made Lip Scrub: Creating one’s own lip scrub is another option, which women can try to make pout lips. A mix of sugar, honey and olive oil, then apply the mixture on your lips. This would act as a gentle scrub and after sometime, wash it off. Doing this for few times in a week would give amazing results.
  4. Special Treatments in Dermatology: In case the natural remedies do not work, then certain typical treatments in dermatology could be opted. Pixel Perfect or Clearlift Lasers can help lighten dark lips. Both the procedures are safe and free from any sort of pain. These are light therapies to attack the dark areas of the lips. Pixel Perfect needs 2 to 4 sittings as it works to shed the dark skin from the lips’ surface. As in Clearlift, the cells which make melanin or pigment are targeted directly, so it may take longer to show effects.

The Effects Of Aging On Skin!

MBBS, MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy

The Effects Of Aging On Skin!

Our skin undergoes certain changes with age. A lifetime of exposure to the sun, habits such as diet and smoking leads to changes in our skin slowly, as we age. As we get older, the skin does not stay as smooth and firm like before. It may also become drier, thinner and more fragile. As we age, the skin also becomes more prone to bruises, which is a result of a smaller amount support around the walls of blood vessels.

Major changes that can be observed in the skin due to ageing are as follows:

  1. The skin turns rough
  2. The skin develops lesions like benign tumors
  3. The skin becomes slack due to the loss of elastic tissues like elastin and collagen and tends to hang loosely
  4. The skin gets more transparent with age, which is caused as a result of the epidermis thinning down
  5. The skin slowly turns fragile. This occurs due to flattening of the area where the epidermis and dermis meet

Photoaging: Over time, the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun cause damage to fibers in the skin known as elastin. Due to the breakdown of the elastin fibers, the skin tends to sag and stretch. The ability to snap back after stretching is lost. The skin gets bruised and tears up very easily and bruises require a longer time to heal. Sun damage shows itself with ageing.

Subcutaneous changes:
These are the changes, which occur below the surface of the skin because of aging. They include the following:

  1. Fat is lost under the surface of the skin on the cheeks, chin, nose, eyes and temples. This causes loosening of the skin, giving it a bony appearance with sunken eyes.
  2. Bone loss occurs after attaining the age of sixty, especially around the mouth and chin region. Puckering of the skin in the mouth is indicated.
  3. Cartilage loss may occur on the nose. This causes the nasal tip to droop down and the bony structure of the nose gets accentuated.

Other changes: Other factors such as gravity, sleeping position and facial movements also cause changes in our skin. When skin elasticity is lost, the eyebrows and eyelids may droop due to gravity. Loosening and fullness of skin is observed under the jaw, cheeks and earlobes. Facial movement lines become prominent with old age and lines appear on the forehead, temples, cheeks and at the root of the nose.

As we become old, several changes in the surface of our skin, as well as beneath the skin are likely. This is natural and occurs in every person. However, proper skin care should be taken, irrespective of your age.

Corns And Calluses - How Can It Be Treated?

MBBS, MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy

Corns And Calluses - How Can It Be Treated?

Corns and calluses refer to the hardening of the skin to form a layer over an area where constant pressure and abrasion is experienced. This thickening of the skin is known as a corn or callus. One will usually experience pain and tenderness in the area where this thickening happens. While corns are thick and tender coatings, a callus is usually the flattened thick area on the skin. As far as shape goes, corns are conical and sharpened while calluses are flat. They are most typically found on the hands and feet. There are various ways of treating this condition. Let us find out more.

What causes corns and calluses?
To understand how to treat these corns and calluses, it is important to first of all understand what causes the same. These corns and calluses are usually formed as a natural defence as the body tries to strengthen the skin when it meets too much friction or pressure. This condition may occur when the toes are pressed together constantly with an abnormal elevation. This can also happen when there is prolonged use of high heels as well as sports training footwear. Bone deformities in the toes and fingers can also be one of the causes of this condition. In many cases, the gait and movement of the patient can cause corns and calluses. Also, when a person plays musical instruments that require constant strumming like a guitar or other instruments, it may result in formation of corns and calluses in the fingers.

  1. Medical Intervention for Complications: If a patient is suffering from conditions like diabetes or peripheral arterial disease, it may lead to poor circulation and delicate skin. This can cause the development and growth of corns and calluses. It is important to see your doctor in such cases so that such symptoms may be treated at the onset before they become too painful and end up spreading.
  2. Medication: A patient will have to ingest salicylic acid based medicines and even resort to the use of sulphur in order to cure these corns and calluses. One must ensure that a skin specialist or dermatologist prescribes the medicines so that one can apply and administer as per the correct dosage.
  3. Home Remedies: Personal hygiene is one of the primary factors that can help in treating and curing this condition. Keeping the affected area clean can increase the chances of the growth to clear up soon. Also, one may have to avoid wearing high heels and constricting footwear for a while until the corns and calluses clear up or fall off. This will also ensure that there is less friction between the feet and the footwear for better recovery chances.

How Exercise Makes You Look Younger?

How Exercise Makes You Look Younger?

The benefits of regular exercise in our constantly changing lifestyles cannot be over emphasized. Look at any of the lifestyle associated diseases and exercise is definitely one of the ways to beat it. Over the years, with stress and changed lifestyle, people are ageing faster than they should; the rate of ageing has also increased. Including exercise as a regimen can immensely help anti-ageing. Read on to know how exercise can help skin look younger and reverse some effects of ageing.

For those who are used to a moderate workout regularly, it is like an energy drink that fires up the brain and body, leaving you more alert and alive. While most people associate exercise with workout and fatigue, the truth is that it energizes and vitalizes the body like nothing else.

  1. With age, the outer layer of the skin thickens and the inner layer becomes thin. This results in freckles, dark circles under the eyes, reduced elasticity, etc. The thinning inner layer is not able to replace collagen and replace elasticity at the same rate as it is being lost. What exercise does is work up sweat, which cleans off the dead cells from the top layer. The skin pores open up, thereby allowing the skin to breathe which in turn allows more oxygen to reach the underlying thin layer, and lets it make collagen. This improves firmness and elasticity of the skin.
  2. Another way the skin is benefitted from exercise is the effect it has on the skin, which is almost equivalent to a facial. Sweating from an exercise opens up the pores, which removes all the dirt trapped in the immediate underlying layers. One should not forget to wash off the skin after a good workout; else the dirt can settle and cause damage.
  3. Another way exercise benefits the skin is by reducing general inflammation in the body. This helps regulate hormones that are essential for the skin and prevents free radical damage, which helps prevent ageing of the skin.
  4. Exercise also improves blood flow in the skin. A workout requires more blood flow to the various body parts and the tiny arteries under the skin open up, allowing more free flow of blood. This ensures the skin gets the essential nutrients that are essential for regular maintenance and growth and repair. It also reduces damage from sun and improves collagen production, which helps in controlling wrinkles.

As mentioned earlier, the underlying thinner layer has, what are called fibroblasts, which gradually reduce in number with age. The added nutrient supply can improve their number and function, adding elasticity to the skin. The overall health benefits, stress reduction, improved vitality and vigor add to these benefits, producing a younger-looking you!

Prickly Heat Rashes - Ways To Get Rid Of Them!

Prickly heat rashes, otherwise called miliaria rubra, is a rash comprising little, raised red spots that causes a stinging or prickling sensation and irritation on the skin. These rashes can grow at any place on the body, yet it normally shows up all over, neck, back, abdomen or thighs, a couple days after one is exposed to high temperatures.

The rash results in minor spots or knocks that are surrounded by a territory of red skin. The spots, once in awhile, look like modest blisters and can bring about:

  1. Mellow swelling

  2. Tingling

  3. A stinging or extreme prickling sensation

  4. Itching

Prickly heat rashes, more often than not, occur when a person sweats more than expected. For example, during hot or damp climate. However, it is more likely to get prickly heat in the winter.

The condition is brought about when the body's sweat glands tend to get blocked. Extreme sweating leads to sweat getting trapped under your skin. The trapped sweat causes skin disturbance and results in different types of heat rashes.

Prickly heat rashes are not an extreme condition and usually require a particular treatment. The rash typically vanishes after a couple of days. However, there are a few things you can do to treat your symptoms. The best ways to cure prickly heat rashes are:

  1. Stay away from excessive warmth and humidity in case you have to go outside. Try to stay in the shade or take a small fan with you. Being exposed to the warmth will make you sweat increasingly and may exacerbate your rash to a great degree thus, leading to pain and even sores. Drink a lot of liquid to stay away from lack of hydration, particularly in hot climate.

  2. Wear free flowing and loose cotton clothes and abstain from wearing synthetic clothes. For instance, polyester and nylon trap heat faster than regular filaments, so it is better to avoid them.

  3. Keep your skin cool. A shower will cool you off, relieve your skin and reduce excessive sweating. Staying in a ventilated space for a couple of hours a day will likewise be of significant help. Under extreme conditions, you can utilize an ice pack, however do not keep it on the skin for longer than 20 minutes.

  4. Utilize calamine cream. It is available at most drug stores and will relieve you from sore and disturbed skin.

  5. Apply hydrocortisone cream. Low-quality hydrocortisone cream is available at drug stores and is adept at treating exceptionally aggravated areas of the skin. In any case, abstain from utilizing it all over and follow the directions of a skin specialist.

  6. Antihistamine tablets may control tingling and itching. Do consult a specialist or a doctor before using them, considering the side-effects they might have on you.

7 Things You Should Think Twice About Before Putting Them On Your Face!

MBBS, MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy
Dermatologist, Hyderabad
7 Things You Should Think Twice About Before Putting Them On Your Face!

The most special aspect of one’s personality is the face and is the most significant part that helps in identifying a person. Thus, naturally, and understandably, almost everyone loves indulging in facial care and is on the hunt for facial beauty products. However, you must know what goes into your skin and what problems it may cause before using a product.

Hence, below is a list of some common items that you should think twice about before applying them to your face:

1. Let the shampoos not get into facial skin

The face and hair comprise of different molecules. Though the hair requires stronger surfactants for removal of oil and dirt, the face needs a milder cleanser. Shampoos are not able to address the delicate and softer molecules which are present in the facial skin. When the shampoo from the hair drips down to the face, it can make the facial skin dry and flaky which can make it harder to repair.

2. Petroleum jelly might clog the pores

Petroleum jelly is often considered a home run in most households. With aging, the skin starts getting thinner, and the elasticity decreases. The best thing that you can do for your skin is to keep it moisturized. However, petroleum jelly is very thick and doesn’t evaporate, thereby it does not allow the moisture to come to the surface of the skin. Moisturizing is important but more important is choosing the right moisturiser.

3. Toothpaste for pimples? No!

There is hardly any person on the planet who has not used a dab of toothpaste for drying out a pimple. A lot of toothpaste contain anti-bacterial agents that can help with a blemish. The result may be that you may end up having irritation and therefore, you should limit the application of toothpaste to your teeth only.

4. Dilute Lemon juice before use

Lemon juice is always held as an epitome of skin brightener. Apple cider vinegar is the new rage in the skincare regime. If you feel like using these ingredients, then make sure that you dilute them with water before applying it to the skin.

5. Baking soda

A lot of scrubbing or exfoliating can be quite detrimental to the facial skin. Though you may believe that baking soda can help keep your skin clean, you should never apply it directly on the skin. You may mix it with your regular face cleanser or coconut oil.

6. Use specific serums

Just like all other cosmetics, serums for varying body areas are comprised of varying components. This means that your skin cannot handle your hair serum. Hair serums comprise of ingredients which are meant for treating hair shaft but won’t treat the problems of your skin.

7. Alcohol-based products

Astringents and toners are always present in the skincare shelves, but they are not able to treat skin issues. It would be best to use lightweight moisturizer or switch to a different face cleanser to avoid hurting the skin.

Thus, doing a little research before dabbing on a product on your face can spare your facial skin from possible hazards and adverse reactions.

Permanent Tattoo Removal - Know Its Risks And Side-Effects!

Permanent Tattoo Removal - Know Its Risks And Side-Effects!

A tattoo has a strong emotional association with the person having it. Commonly it is the loved ones name, idols, quotes or just anything that a person feels connected to. However, over time, it may happen that the tattoo may not hold the same relevance as it used to once upon a time. It could also lose the esthetic appeal it once held. Whatever the reason, the tattoo needs to go. While tattoos were considered something permanent, there are now ways to remove it.

While the earlier methods were crude including removing the tattooed skin and grafting new skin, sanding the area, or dermabrasion; but today with the use of laser, the process has become much simpler and convenient. Laser is now the most widely used method of removing the tattoo.

A thorough evaluation to see the extent of the tattoo, in terms of depth, size and colors, is done before planning its removal. The type, strength and sessions of lasers will depend on these factors.

During the removal, the tattooed area is focused with a handheld device that emits laser light of the desired frequency and strength. This removes the colored pigments of the tattoo without affecting the surrounding skin. Different wavelengths of light are used to remove different pigments, which get broken down. These pigments are then washed out from the body as wastes.

Depending on the size and colors used in the tattoo, more than one sitting may be required. For large ones, up to 6 to 8 months may be required for complete removal. A minimum of 4 weeks gap is required between two sittings, allowing sufficient time for the skin to heal.

Professional vs Amateur Tattoos-

Professional applied tattoos penetrate deeper into the skin at uniform levels which can make it easier to treat, but not always, as the ink is usually more dense. Amateur tattoos are often applied with an uneven hand which can make the removal challenging but overall they are easier to remove.

Risks and Side Effects:

There are a handful of symptoms you might see post-treatment. Among them are blisters, swelling, raising of the tattoo, pinpoint bleeding, redness, and/or temporary darkening. Not to worry, though. These are common and usually subside within one to two weeks. If they don't, talk to your doctor.

  1. The way getting tattoo caused some pain, the removal will also cause some pain. Topical or local anaesthesia is used to make it comfortable.

  2. Not just the tattoo pigment but also some of the natural skin pigment is lost, so the skin can become lighter or darker than the surrounding skin.

  3. In some cases, there could be some scarring. The scar will get better and can be treated after tattoo laser sessions.

So, if you thought a tattoo is forever, it is not so. Go ahead and plan for its removal, of course after understanding what it entails. If there is any tattoo on your body which you no longer like, meet your dermatologist for consultation and then laser to make that undesired ink fade!! In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Face The Summer With Younger, Better-Looking Skin With Laser Resurfacing!

MBBS, MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy
Dermatologist, Hyderabad
Face The Summer With Younger, Better-Looking Skin With Laser Resurfacing!

Summer is a time when we like to step out in style. And style does not merely mean getting the latest pieces from the runway for your wardrobe. It also means having a well groomed appearance that is free of any signs of neglect. The skin is the first area that draws the attention of people and should be maintained well, especially during harsh summer months which are also filled with holidays and outings with near and dear ones. One way of taking care of your skin is with laser resurfacing. Let us find out more.

Definition: Laser resurfacing uses beams of lasers to reduce the appearance of fine lines on the facial skin. It is also a good method for treating skin irregularities that may come about due to the process of aging or the ravages of too much sun exposure as well as stressful lifestyles where late hours have become the norm. With the technique used in this process, pulsating beams of light are trained on the irregular portions of the facial skin so as to remove the skin, one layer at a time. This method is also known as lasabrasion or laser peeling.

Candidates: To find out if you are a good candidate for this kind of a procedure, you will need to take a good hard look at yourself. If you notice the advent of fine lines and wrinkles that are marring your features and making your skin look uneven even as the sagging is beginning to show up in some parts, then you may want to consider this treatment. You can also have a check up done at a dermatologist's office to ensure that you are a good candidate for this treatment. If you have acne or very dark hued skin, then you cannot qualify for this treatment. Also, this procedure cannot fix stretch marks.

Types of Lasers: There are two kinds of lasers that are used in this treatment. The first is carbon dioxide or CO2 lasers and the second is Erbium lasers. While CO2 lasers can deal with wrinkles, warts, and scars with short pulsed light concentrations, Erbium laser resurfacing can remove the surface level and deeper lines and wrinkles with minimal burning as far as the surrounding tissue goes. This is a good method in case you have darker skin and the side effects are very mild. The side effects of the Erbium laser resurfacing method consist of swelling and bruising while the recovery time is about two to three weeks.

So get ready to shine with sparkling skin that is not marred with any lines and scars, this Summer!
