Myths and Facts about Dental care

Dentist, Bangalore
Myths and Facts about Dental care
Myth 1: Scaling is not good for teeth

Fact: Scaling removes tartar and keeps teeth and gums healthy. Scaling and deep cleaning of gums prevent the problem of bad breath and bleeding gums. Thus, scaling is beneficial for teeth and gums. One should get professional cleaning done by a dentist with a proper ultrasonic scaler. Also, getting extensive scaling (more than required) done is harmful.

Myth 2: Only sugar causes cavities

Fact: Cavities occur when bacteria produce acids in the mouth. The process can begin by any carbohydrate that you consume. That includes sugar, fruits, vegetables, rice and bread. To reduce chances of tooth decay, one should not only practice good dental care but also limit the intake of acidic products.

Myth 3: Teeth whitening is harmful as it damages enamel

Fact: Technique like zoom whitening works by exfoliating stains from one's teeth to lighten them and bring back their natural colour. It is the simplest and safest procedure as a product is used by dentists that is devoid of bleaching agents and chemicals.

Myth 4: Brushing your bleeding gums is bad

Fact: Brushing is not only good on teeth, but also on your gums and tongue. Brushing these areas helps get rid of plaque which is what causes inflammation and eventually gum disease. One should not brush too hard if they have sensitive gums. One must not use a hard toothbrush on bleeding gums.

Myth 5: Using sugarless chewing gum after meal can replace brushing

Fact: Nothing can replace proper brushing technique. And in case you want to use sugarless chewing gum do not chew it for more than 10 minutes.

Stem cell regeneration is still in research phase. But you can always opt for artificial teeth. They are available for fixed n removable.

Why Dental Implants Work So Well

MS Restorative, Certificate SMR, BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Why Dental Implants Work So Well

Tooth lost to either decay or gum disease leaves a dent in many areas - facial appearance, chewing, facial structure support, etc.  Fixed dentures were a good substitute, however, with one major disadvantage.  They required removal of natural tooth structure from adjacent healthy teeth.  The next big search was to find ways to avoid this, and the result is the dental implant.

The tooth has a visible part called the crown and an invisible part called the root which is hidden in the jaw bone.  While the fixed denture replaces only the crown, the implant replaces both the crown and the root.

How implants are done: Once a tooth is lost and the bone is healed to the desired extent, a biocompatible titanium post that is screwed into the bone. This material has the unique property of osseointegration - it fuses to the bone, which is almost like a natural tooth in its socket.  This complete fusion may take about 2 to 6 months depending on overall health. After it gets absorbed well into the bone, a crown that matches the adjacent teeth is fixed on it.  Implants can also be used for replacing multiple teeth or for overdentures.

There are certain reasons why implants work so well, listed below are some:

  • The material: Titanium is biocompatible and does not cause any adverse reaction in the body.  It fuses to the bone completely and is not just put in place to fill the gap. That ensures that the support provided for the new crown or bridge is as good as the original tooth with a root embedded in the jaw bone
  • Post-implant care:  Required, but not to the extent required by dentures.  There is very minimal difference between caring for an implant and caring for an implant
  • Function: As the implant is completely fused and embedded in the bone, it functions as good as a natural tooth in terms of chewing efficiency and pressure that can be applied on it. This is not the case with dentures
  • Gum health: Bridges have an adverse effect on the gums with a constant mild pressure exerted on them.  Implants do not do that and therefore are more friendly on the gums
  • Bone health: While bridges affect the alveolar bone health by allowing them to continue to degenerate, implants occupy the space in the bone and do not allow further degeneration. This is probably the most important advantage of implants.
  • Aesthetics: Needless to say, the look of a well-done implant far surpasses that of the dentures.

Check with your dentist if you are an ideal candidate for implant, and if yes, it surely is worth the investment.

I have pain in my jaws from last 2 months. please give me solutions. How can I get rid from this.
Jaw pain can can be because of various reasons. Either it can be due to decay in teeth. Or because of improper contacts of your opposing teeth. Or a wisdom tooth trying to come. Last but not the least it can be due to a joint issue. Please see your dentist!

Ways to prevent bad breath Ways to prevent bad breath Prevent bad breath by brushing your teeth and flossing twice a day. Brush your tongue/try using a tongue scraper, to remove any trapped food and plaque caught in the tiny hair-like fibers on the tongue.  Finish off your brushing by rinsing thoroughly with water or mouthwash. Bad breath can be prevented by the treatment of dental problems such as tooth decay, gum abscesses, and abscessed teeth. Place a few drops of tee tree oil or peppermint oil on your tongue or use the oil on your toothbrush along with your toothpaste. Quit smoking, as this is the only way to eliminate bad breath from the use of cigarettes, which is also responsible for periodontal disease. Avoid foods known to cause bad breath such as garlic, onions, cabbage, certain spices, and coffee. A dry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a major factor when it comes to bad breath. Sip water, chew sugar-free gum to help produce more saliva. If you are using breath fresheners on a regular basis, consider choosing one that contains xylitol, a sweetener that some studies have shown to reduce cavities. Avoid products that contain sugar to prevent the accumulation of plaque. Occasionally use a mixture of 50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% water, as a mouth rinse. Hydrogen peroxide will help kill the bacteria that cause bad breath. Prevent bad breath by visit your dentist on a regular basis (every six months or as indicated by your dentist) for a complete examination of your teeth and gums and thorough cleaning.

Sir I have sml problem in my mouth day by day it increase how can I stop it please help me.

Sir I have sml problem in my mouth day by day it increase how can I stop it please help me.
• Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid eating strongly flavoured or spicy food. • Cut down on sugary food and drink, as it can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth. • Reduce your alcohol consumption. • Stop smoking. • Cut down on coffee. • Drink plenty of water to help prevent your mouth becoming dry. • Chew sugar-free gum after eating, to stimulate the flow of saliva. This will help clean away any remaining food particles. • Don't use toothpaste to clean your dentures, as it can scratch the surface and cause stains. • Clean your dentures thoroughly using soap and lukewarm water, denture cream or a denture-cleaning tablet. • Use a separate toothbrush to clean your dentures. • Make sure you visit your dentist for regular check-ups. Having regular dental check-ups will ensure that any plaque is removed from your teeth, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. • Your dentist can recommend the best way to clean your teeth and gums, and point out areas you might be missing. They can also identify any signs of gum disease and ensure early treatment. • Gastritis, lung & sinus infection may also be the cause of bad smell in the mouth. 90% of bad breath is due to a dirty tongue. • If your bad breath is caused by a gastrointestinal problem, such as an H. pylori infection or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), you may be referred to a gastroenterologist. • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. • You may need deep cleaning & fill tooth cavities with artificial enamel filling. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash until then. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person.

Cavity in tooth. And sometimes it pain very badly. What should I go for rct? or tooth extraction? please suggest.
Only after clinical examination and possibly xray can one decide whether a cavity can be restored with a simple filling or requires a root canal. Tooth extraction is the last option only if no other measures are possible.

You can exercise for healthier gums as well. Gently bite down so as to make sure that your teeth make a clinking sound when they meet. Repeat this 30 to 40 times continously. This exercise will stimulate the flow of blood and will keep your gums healthy.

Hello lybrate-user, inability to open the mouth completely can be due to a variety of reasons. The most common cause for the same in your age group is erupting wisdom tooth (3rd molar). Other reasons can be Temporo Mandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, fibrosis of mucosa of the oral cavity etc. I would advise you to visit a dentist, preferably an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon who after diagnosing your problem will suggest the recommended treatment. In the mean time take good care of your oral hygiene by regular brushing and rinsing of mouth. Hope this helps, all the best.
