My daughter has been taking fluoxetine 40 mg for about 18 months. She was having depression but is much better now. When should we stop the medication?

I am sorry to say NO. Depression is a mental disease. If your daughter is taking medicines for 18 months, she is ought to feel better. Now you may talk to your psychiatrist to slowly taper that medicine over a period of another 18 months. If symptoms relapse, the medicine should not be stopped. Work with your psychiatrist. Psychotherapy methods will teach your daughter to manage her depression. You may post a private question to me with every detail and I shall provide all the required steps to be taken to manage your problem (for a fee). You are right you are under some stress, and as you address it, memory and concentration will happily return to favor you. Do meet with a counselor, if your stress is too much. In the meantime please follow the suggested guidelines: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that you and the family go for counseling too. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid all junk food.

A healthy Brain is mankind’s greatest tool and a storehouse of our cognitive abilities. Memory loss, dementia and other weakness of the brain have impairing effect .There is no specific reason for having a weak memory and forgetfulness, though stress, over-exertion of mind and even sleeplessness can play a part. There are Homeopathic medicines for increasing memory made of natural substances and completely safe with no side effects, Homeopathic medicines are given after taking note of unique individual symptoms. A person could have a weak memory when it comes to studying, for dates, for places, for recalling past or even recent events, or the common weak memory in elders. The Homeopathic remedies are prescribed after taking note of individual symptoms and are very effective as a medicine for weak memory and forgetfulness. As there are other symptoms along with which your suffering a complete case taking is needed. Consult for any further help.

Dear lybrateuser, -the appearance & structure of your body is controlled by the hormones in your body which lead to the changes which you have mentioned. -do regular exercises like pushups which strengthen your chest muscles & do exercises like crunches, situps which can help reduce your waist size, also do brisk walking, jogging or swimming for overall fitness & loss of weight. -have less of fried, junk food, more of fruits, veg whole grains, so that your weight is maintained.

Does gonococcal bacteria die on toilet seat within few seconds or minute even if seat is infected fluid liquid is still there.

No risk, no worry. Probably only a few minutes, i.e. When the infected fluid dries. But it doesn't matter, really. Gonorrhea and other STDs are never caught from a contaminated environment. There is no risk from sharing toilets, towels, clothing, or touching contaminated surfaces. Use common sense hygiene but otherwise don't worry about it.

Psychosomatic disorder means there is no defect in physically. It is everything related to psychological. For that reason medicine will not work properly to her. For psychosomatic disorders psychotherapy or psychological counselling helps to her very much. Better to stop the medicine. Consult psychologist. He understands total situation. Suggest some of the behavioural modification. Based on his recommendation please change her lifestyle modification. It is very difficult. But it works properly. It is permanent method. It has no side effects. Physically there is no problems. If anything is wrong the diagnosis reveal t. At. You already go for medicine. The doctor himself described that it is psychosomatic. Then why do you late. Better to consult a qualified psychologist. Better to follow his recommendations. Better to share her thoughts. Ask what are the problems in school. Better to take further steps to remove her problems. Treat her as a friend ask each and every problem. Better to friendly with her. Do not allow her loneliness. Share all the feelings. Be happy with her and be friendly. Ok all the best.

Hi, I am recently facing problem of short time memory loss and low grasping. Not able to memorize the things and able to speak fluently. Also some times I am getting headache it is more prominent on forehead.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Hello, as you told that you are having issues with your memory in form of inability to remember things, notable to speak fluently, not able to recapitulate things, along with frontal headache. These symptoms are pointing towards an underlying organic disturbances or psychological disturbances. Most common cause of such kind of presentation can be internal bleeds due to uncontrolled blood pressure, injuries, tumours. Among psychological conditions, depressive episodes can also lead to such symptoms. However a definite conclusion can only be reached after your detailed evaluation which would include history about your current symptoms, detailed physical assessment, mental status assessment, mmse, assessment of higher cognitive function, and if required imaging in the form of ct scans, mris. Then after a management plan can be determined which might include medications and therapy.

Pain is there for a Reason. Pain is the way our bodies speak to us.

Its a constant reminder of a malfunction happening inside of us.

Pain is good. Its that reflex withdrawal from something too hot.

Its that Spasm that restricts your movement when you don’t,

Its a Protective Mechanism to ensure better lives,

Its the exaggeration of every sensation you feel,

Letting you know that its too much.

Ya that’s pain and its good.

Pain is a signal for us, Humans to stop.
