Do You Know about Conversion Disorder?

Do You Know about Conversion Disorder?

Conversion disorder is a psychological disorder in which psychological conflicts get converted into physical symptoms.

The disease is also referred to as a functional neurological symptom disorder. In most cases, this disorder has an impact on your ability to move, your senses, vision, hearing capacity and ability to swallow.

Causative factors

The main cause behind the onset of a conversion disorder is generally a sudden traumatic event (real or imagined). This may also happen due to an emotional conflict or any other mental health disorder, which directly or indirectly affects your brain in an undesirable manner.

Though the exact factors which cause the disease are still unknown, it has been proved by medical researchers that the disorder affects that part of the brain which controls the majority of the senses, muscles, and nerves.

Identification signs

The symptoms of this condition may usually appear immediately after a traumatic event, be it physical or psychological. Some of the most common symptoms of this disorder are listed below.

  • Weakness or paralysis of a body part
  • Loss of body balance
  • Moments of unresponsiveness
  • Abnormal, sudden and abrupt body movements such as tremors
  • Swallowing problems such as lump in the throat

Some of the symptoms of this disorder might also affect the sensory organs, which include:

  • Abnormal numbness of the body
  • Speech related problems or inability to speak (psychological mutism)
  • Vision related problems such as psychological blindness
  • Hearing problems and difficulties

Hi, You can go ahead with marriage its not a problem. Phimosis is a condition that occurs in all ages of men, where the foreskin does not fully retract over the head of the penis. The non retractable state can be considered normal for males up to adolescence. It is possible to acquired phimosis from damage or scarring to the penis, it can show as a white ring around the tip that is hardened non elastic skin. It can also be caused by narrowness. Some men may have trouble during sex and masturbation, even pain. If this happens once, let it heal. If it happens continually you will want to take action. Seeking a doctor is always the best step, but here we go into depth on some home remedies that may work, or get your started. Along with stretching (which I hope you are doing it in right way), Although it’s not necessary, your doctor can prescribe betamethasone cream to help speed up the process. Apply a tiny dab of cream twice a day to the inside of the tight ring, after stretching, and rub it in. This will make your skin produce less collagen, so it is more likely to stay stretched out between sessions. Try not to get much on your glans, but it may be unavoidable. Never use soap on your penis. Wash it using only water. You can gently retract the foreskin when you urinate. Again, over time, this will help to stretch the foreskin. Consult me for query. All the best.

The zosert, arpizol, amlo and ciplar are good psychiatric and hypertension medications and are allopathic and not homeopathic. I am not sure what homeo she gave, but there are many quacks out there who collect huge amounts of money and fleece innocent patients like you. Even if homeo medicines are given get it from authorized dealer with prescription, the choice of allopathy or homeo is yours, but do not combine both a you do not know which works and the drug interactions between these 2 streams of medicine have not been studied.

I am sorry about your loss. You seem to be going thro "grief reaction" which is normal and experienced by all after loss of loved one. If the relationship was unpleasant and in turmoil then the grief can be prolonged and become depressive illness. I would suggest you work thro this loss by talking to friends and family, and explore your feeling. OfCourse that can be difficult sometimes, therefore seeing an independent and objective psychologist or psychiatric consultation may be helpful.

You are going through extended grief reaction, which is normal after loss of a loved one. Time is the healer for the emotional and behavioral changes, however if your depression is severe enough to affect you in a significant manner, kindly consult a psychiatrist for short term antidepressant medication, depending on the complaints.

My advice to you will be to not to focus or analyse too much on your feeling s all the time. That is the trap bipolar & depression people fall into. Everyone has ups & downs in emotions every single day. Do not consider yourself as a bipolar patient. Set of emotional state oe repeated typed of thoughts vaguelyare grouped as a particular problemproblem for therapeutic convince. But if you are focused on it, trying hard to get over it, you may find yourself in a perpetuating conflict. Let life flow. As it has, and as it has to.

I am diagnosed by my doctor as to have bipolar disorder. I am under medication for last 9 months. But I am still depressed. I am prescribed to take Divalproex Sodium 250 m. G. And Fluoxetine 40 mg a day. What should I do?

It can be a crippling disease if not treated, and if treated early, the prognosis is good. So quickly visit a counsellor apart from your psychiatrist and you must then follow the medication and therapy prescribed. Comply with all the medical prescriptions and work in tandem with a counselor for a long time and learn coping skills and techniques to handle the daily challenges you will face. There are certain adaptations that will suit you during the elation phase and there are certain behaviors that are required during the depressed phases. In the meantime, you can do certain things that will give you benefits anyway. Emotional therapy will alleviate a lot of the problems faced in this condition because it is a mood disorder. You need to particularly look at your levels of anger both for its reasonableness and to express it in an appropriate manner. I suspect that much of this anger may have origins in early childhood that you may never be aware of now. Talk to your parents and explore that angle. This information will help the counselor too. Also, you will need to check whether there is any genetic factor involved. You must exercise regularly, eat healthily and sleep normally too. If your motivation and cooperation are good much can be achieved. You must have a time-structured schedule filled with interesting and reasonable activities and it must be monitored for compliance and delivery. The reason I say this is that many times you will be inclined to have grandiose notions and confidently believe that you are doing fine and that you can do without the medication. This will set you back many months in the treatment and delay and sabotage the recovery: forewarned you are forearmed. If this combination of medication with therapy is maintained for at least three years without any episodes or breakdowns, it is possible to taper the medication in consonance with the doctor.

I am anjali (18 years old), suffering from major depression since last two-three years, scored 87 in goldberg's depression test and this year was the worst of all I somehow suffered from hypomania as I learned about its symptoms now online. I am not able to judge my awkward behaviour. I even had anxiety attacks not very much but more than rare. Depression took place from last three to four years back leading me to live all alone without telling anyone about my problems as ultimately no one believes in what I say. And everyone including my family members tend to say I talk rubbish, can never stick to a point while explaining something. It lead to me with poor results in school, family and everywhere and all over I am trying to get rid of this disgusting life and tried to commit suicide from last two years but unfortunately I am not able to judge my unusual behaviour which makes me a fool in front of everyone and no one is able to get my awkward behaviour. I always forget things happen just a minute before, have racing thoughts in my mind, always lack self confidence and become nervous but I don't know how I become so much active and become overconfident, excessively cry always but sometimes I laugh excessively and try to joke poorly and realize afterwards what have I done in front of everyone. I am totally confused about me and my life. Even while trying to get rid of this life I think that after this also everyone will blame me of being responsible for all this. What should I do? Please help me out.

Dear lybrate-user, Probably you are suffering from a Bipolar Disorder which has 4 different phases in the same person. 1. Depression - as you have suffered 2. Hypomania or mania - as you have self diagnosed at present. 3. Mixed phase - both depressive and manic symptoms occur together for few days and 4. Normal phase. Instead of taking only a depression scale, please take a Bipolar scale. Since you are only 18 years, psychiatrists may not diagnose without family history or disturbances in your life due to mood changes, etc. Kindly consult a psychiatrist preferably with your parents and get diagnosed. Bipolar disorder can be treated with long term mood stabiliser tablets to improve your quality of life.

I have a bad habit of smoking how can I prevent It I just want to stop it please help me out.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
The best way to quit is to know more about the ill-effects of tobacco. The knowledge is astounding and scary. That information itself should help you to want to quit. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. There are more than 4000 harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke!!! You will need to stop smoking with immediate effect. Then you need to identify why you smoke: there is an oral need, the nicotine effect, the psychological effect of covering up some other issue, for style, to impress, etc. You may discover that the reasons may be unimportant at this stage because you have become too addicted and the habit has become compulsive. You should start exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need, for a little while. You may take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. Don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. As Mark Twain once jocularly said, “giving up smoking is easy; I have done it many times”. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.
