Tips to Prevent Depression in Adults

Tips to Prevent Depression in Adults

Depression in adults is a lot different from depression in younger people. Adults have the overburdening thrust to believe they should be able to deal with any situation, however, adverse of their own accord. This pushes them to such a point that they bottle up worries and anxieties making themselves vulnerable to depression. Reaching out for help is almost a wager; lost before a fair trial. An elderly person could remain depressed due to varied reasons, but the cause is seldom remorse. Assuming the cause as sadness, it could depress your loved ones even more.

Take a look at the following factors that can depress older adults:

1. Serious ailments like stroke, cancer, diabetes, thyroid and so on so forth.
2. The loss of a dear friend or a family member.
3. Excessive work pressure.
4. Stagnation in personal life, passions and goals.
5. Lack of motivation to do the slightest of things.

To prevent depression in adults the following ways should be kept in mind:

1. Interaction is the key principle: Adults might need to talk. Being a grown -up doesn't mean you don't need suggestions and advice of your friends and relatives. Try to interact with a person who you think is depressed.
2. Try to identify medical conditions and look for reliable treatment: Medical illnesses like cancer or diabetes can take a toll on your mental strength. It can discourage you from living life with full vigor and energy. Thus medical conditions should be treated with due care and a person suffering should be encouraged to take professional psychological consultation.
 3. Providing a person with space is mandatory: Adults hate being domineered or patronized. When they need space they should be allowed to be alone. It could help them deal with depression better. Staying alone doesn't always involve loneliness. People might need to clarify things to their own selves or might even need time to introspect.
4. Make a depressed person take care of a pet: The presence of a pet in the household can relieve its members of accumulating stress. An adult when made to take care of a pet has added responsibilities and will naturally have less scope to wallow in their own sorrow. A pet gives a person the love and affection he or she had been lacking all along.
5. Humor is a wonderful pill: Create opportunities to make a person laugh. Share jokes or make them watch funny shows.
6. Ensure the person gets enough sleep: A full night's sleep is extremely important. Insufficient relaxation can push you towards depression.

I am 29 year working women. Due to family disturbance I suffered 3 anxiety attacks. What should I do?
Tremors, feeling anxious or nervous, sense of panic, sweating, increased heartbeat, feeling of impending doom, stomach discomfort, dizziness etc are signs of anxiety. These can be debilitating. If the anxiety us overwhelming, consult a psychiatrist at the earliest. With the right medication and counseling, it is likely your symptoms will improve. Other than that, try yoga, deep breathing, meditation, moderate exercise, progressive muscular relaxation and guided meditation.

I need to work on my memory retention power badly. There is a lot of brainpower I have lost in recent 4 years due to emotional stress and breakdowns. My career demands focus, concentration, memory retention. Is this psycho related? Can there be a timely cure to this? If yes, then what?

Hi, Deep breathing helps to increase your blood flow and oxygen levels, which in turn help your brain to function better. Doing 10-15 minutes of deep breathing each day can help in the long run, but especially doing some deep breathing before and during your studying (and even while you're taking your exam) not only helps keep oxygen and blood flow helping your brain, but it also keeps your anxiety levels down, also helping your brain function better. When you're breathing make sure that you breathe into the bottom of your lungs. Think of it like a balloon expanding, first your belly, then your chest, then your neck. When you let the breath go, it will go in the opposite direction, neck, chest, then belly. Take a break. A good way to help your brain charged up is to take a break. This can either mean cruising the Internet for 15 minutes, or switching to something else for a while, as a change of pace for your brain. It's also a good idea to spend no more than an hour on something before switching to something else for a while. If you haven't finished that something in an hour, set aside time later to work on it some more Eat brain-boosting food. There are lots of different foods that can help boost your brainpower. Conversely, some foods — foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates" junk food" and soda — dull brain processes and make you foggy and sluggish. Try foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids like walnuts and salmon (although eat this sparingly because of the possibility of a higher mercury content), ground flaxseed, winter squash, kidney and pinto beans, spinach, broccoli, pumpkin seeds, and soybeans. Omega-3 fatty acids improve blood circulation, and boost the function of neurotransmitters, which help your brain process and think. Get enough exercise. Physical exercise can do things like enhance the oxygen flow to your brain, which will help it better process and function. It also releases chemicals that enhance your overall mood, as well as protect your brain cells. Scientists have found that exercising actually helps spark the production of more neurons in the brain.[4] Dance and martial arts are especially good ways to boost your brainpower, because they stimulate a wide variety of brain systems, including organization, coordination, planning, and judgement. You're having to move your body (and various parts of it, too) in synch with the music. Learn to meditate. Meditation, especially mindfulness meditation, can help to retrain the brain to work better and to not go down certain negative neuro-pathways. Meditation both reduces stress (which helps the brain function better), but it also increases memory, as well. Find a place to sit quietly, even if only for 15 minutes. Focus on your breathing. Say to yourself as you breathe" breathing in, breathing out. Whenever you find your mind wandering, gently draw it back to focusing on your breath. As you get better at meditating, notice what is going on around you, feel the sun on your face, notice the sound of the birds and the cars outside, smell your roommate's pasta lunch. Most importantly, get enough sleep and get organized.

I am a loud talker I have very loud voice a heavy and harsh voice which cause embarrassment in public. How can I speak softly and can have a pleasant tone quality. Do I have any problem in my vocal cord.

M.S. Counselling and Psychotherapy
Psychologist, Bangalore
I think you have learnt this from your parents/grandparents or other important people, in your early childhood. But the good news is, you can" unlearn" this behaviour and" relearn" how to speak politely and softly. You can practice talking when you are alone, inside a closed room. After practising alone to speak softly, then while in public, please make conscious efforts, to speak slowly and softly. Tell yourself that you need to speak in a gentle voice and to achieve this, do not say anything on your own. Speak only when someone asks your opinion or when you need to talk. Make small sentences. Be careful while choosing your words. Make a list of words which you feel are harsh and try to replace it with milder words. Inform your family memebers about it so that they will not worry when they find you talking alone in a closed room. Please ask your family members and friends to help you in your efforts, by signalling you, when you start talking harshly/loudly. Many times it can be because of anxiety or anger. If you feel people are not listening to you then you are likely to talk in a louder voice. It there is some resentment or anger you are likely to use harsh words. Please check with yourself, what is happening. You already have awareness and acceptance about this, which is very appreicable. Now take the next step to make the necessary changes as mentioned above. All the best.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Porn do not destroy brain. Continuous porn watching and related masturbation somehow becomes a habit. Once it is habituated, leads to anxiety, depression and mood disorder. In that sense porn addicition is harmful for mind. Please make sure that porn watching never becomes an addiction. Take care.

Everday evening I am feeling too depressed and I don' t know how to mean it and even my mind gets blank is there any solution for this problem please in from me it' s really like being in hell

Hypnotherapist, DCS, BSIC, Advanced Trainee of Transactional Analysis, Advanced Skills in Counselling
Psychologist,
Please meet a psychiatrist and a professional counsellor who will help you overcome your feelings of depression and blankness. It can be scary for some people and often need external support initially to help them on the path to recovery. What you can do meanwhile is that indulge in any activity which makes you happy and fulfilled and is meaningful and closer to your dreams of your future. Also do activities that relax you mentally and physically like yoga, meditation, gym, walking, hobbies etc. Keep in the company of cheerful and progressive people, who might help you to look at the brighter side of life and also look at problems objectively and a way to learn and grow in life rather than as a hurdle in your happiness. Take care of your diet, sleep, water intake as they play a big role in depression. Look for positive meaning in anything that has not worked out for you in your life. Every experience has a good and bad side to it. You need to see both and remember that in life there will be ups and downs and it' ll not be a smooth flowing life always. Take care. You can also see a homeopath or an ayurvedic doctor along with a counsellor.

I am smoking from last two years and now I want to quit smoking so now please suggest me how can I quit smoking successfully?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You have to quit cold turkey because the body and mind will torture you endlessly while attempting reduction in smoking. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. But don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. I don’t know what other organs could be damaged but do go for a thorough medical check up to assess the effects of your abuse. Regarding improving your lungs, do a lot of aerobic exercise breathing through your nostrils only. Then there are a lot of deep breathing exercises in Yoga which you can learn too. Deep breathing cleanses your system and lungs and restores it to good health. Deep breathing uses the 80% of the lungs which are not normally used in normal breathing and even when exerting yourself. The greatest effect is in the lungs because this substance is processed through the respiratory system directly through the lung surface. When quitting, you must take one day at a time; though you must give up all smoking at once, and promptly. If you look too far ahead you will get discouraged and will give up. If you sit and count the number of days you have given up, that will also focus too much on achievement. You must focus on the here and now, on that day to be precise. After all quitting is not that easy due to many factors. So even if you fail one day, you must try and try again. Very few people succeed in their first attempt. Your persistence will eventually pay off. The urge to discontinue is hampered by many factors but the worst of them is the conditioning. In fact these conditions can exist all through the day unlike other addictions. But your desire to want to stop is the most important factor. It is important to find out about the ill-effects of smoking to have a reason that alarms you about continuing in the habit. The information is really scary but true and you must remind yourself about this every day. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. So you must avoid it like the plague: it is just very bad medicine for you. In fact it is highly toxic too. You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. You should start vigorous exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may also take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine gums and nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces, substantially. You may also join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

I am having always having a heaheadache when I concentrate on my studies more and I am 16 years old.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You are probably very angry about your study course or the material is too boring. If you are a reluctant student because of the wrong choice of career after you complete your 12th perhaps, then that could be a bother too. I suggest you meet with a career guidance counselor and do an aptitude test and on the basis of your natural skills, you can choose a career very suitable to your talents. This will bring huge relief and it is the right thing to do under these circumstances. If the headaches persist, then do visit a neurologist to rule out any other problem not related to your emotions or studies.

It is actually a two edged sword" rumination of negative thoughts in mind" leading to" insomnia" and vice versa. This is usually a part if anxiety disorders caused due to unmanaged stress and other problems. You should consult a psychiatrist with exact and complete details of your problems for some goal oriented counselling, behaviour therapies and medications if required for insomnia.

My friend is smoking marijuana from past 4 years. Now he wants to quit smoking but he can't do that. What should he do?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate-user, Welcome to Lybrate. Marijuana addiction also comes under abuse and addiction. If you’re ready to stop the substance and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from addiction and abuse —no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of addiction. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan. Take care.
