Dear, paranoid schizophrenia also called schizophrenia, paranoid type is a sub-type of schizophrenia. The clinical picture is dominated by relatively stable, often paranoid, delusions, usually accompanied by hallucinations, particularly of the auditory variety (hearing voices), and perceptual disturbances. These symptoms can have a huge effect on functioning and can negatively impact a person? s quality of life. I am sorry to say, paranoid schizophrenia is a lifelong illness, but with proper treatment, a person suffering from the illness can live a higher quality of life. Please work with your psychiatrist for management of your symptoms. Take care.

Your symptoms suggest depression or anxiety disorder. Kindly visit a psychiatrist. Eat well, sleep on time, maintain a regular day structure, meditation, breathing exercises, focus on the task, all these will improve apart from psychiatric treatment.

Sir, I am very anxious nowadays. I have university exams now. I feel disturbed about exams. But I cracked entrance exam and scored good marks before. There was no problem at that time only small fear but it didn't disturbed me. Now from this exam I am very anxious. My hands some time shiver, high heart rate and blurred vision. I checked blood sugar. But that is not matter. I think I couldn't write exam. Does it an anxiety disorder or other problem? What can I do to manage this?

General Physician,
It is just anxiety and you have to calm mind and meditaion will help. If you feel excessive sleep or tiredness/ head spinning or vertigo like feeling you have to make sure you have no anaemia or hypothyroidism by doing a blood CBC & TSH and inform me directly 10 Study Tips to Improve Your Learning Study Tip 1: Underlining Underlining is one of the simplest and best known study tips. It’s easy to highlight the most significant parts of what you’re reading. One key sentence per paragraph and a few important phrases here and there. You can only retain a certain amount so it’s best to retain the most important information. Study Tip 2: Make your own note and taking notes is one of the most widespread study skills out there. Essentially the aim of note-taking is to summarise lectures or articles in your own words so you can easily remember the ideas. Study Tip 3: Mind mapping A good Mind map can save you many hours of study and further consolidate your knowledge for your exams. Mind Maps are an extremely versatile tools. They can be used for brainstorming, outlining essays or study topics and for general exam preparation, ExamTime offers the ability to create Mind Maps quickly and easily which makes them the ideal tool when it comes to exams. Study Tip 4: Flash cards:- Using these are a particularly effective method of learning when trying to assimilate different facts, dates, formulas or vocabulary. Subjects such as History, Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Geography or any language are made much easier if you incorporate Flashcards in to your study. Study Tip 5: Case Studies Sometimes it can be difficult to grasp the implications of some theories. This is where studying case studies can be a big help. Case studies can help you visualise a theory and place it in a more familiar and realistic context. This is especially useful in business or law subjects. Study Tip 6: Quizzes are an excellent way to review study notes in the weeks and days before an exam. Quizzes can show where your strengths and weaknesses are, so it allows you to focus your efforts more precisely. Moreover, if you share your Study Quiz with your classmates and test each other as much as possible you can discover even more details and areas you may have overlooked. So before any exam, make sure you create and share a bunch of different Quizzes with your Friends. Study Tip 7: Brainstorming This is another study technique that is ideal for studying with friends and/or classmates. Brainstorming is a great way to expand every possible idea out of any topic. Just get a bunch of friends together and shoot the breeze, there are no wrong answers when brainstorming – just talk and capture the ideas, you can review afterward. Study Tip 8: Mnemonic Rules Mnemonics are especially useful when memorising lists and sets. Mnemonics rules basically work by associating certain concepts with other concepts that are more familiar to us. There are many different ways to make mnemonics and these can be individual to the person. Study Tip 9: ORGANISE your study One of the most effective study skills is also one of the most often overlooked; this is organising your study. Creating a TIME TABLE gives you goals and a time in which to achieve them. Having a study timetable as you study is greatly motivational Study Tip 10: Drawing Many people find it easier to recall images rather than text that is why they are better able to memorise concepts if they associate them with pictures or drawings. If you find answer helpful please click on “helpful” tab for knowing my efforts are useful CONCENTRATION TIPS Here’s some tips to get into a state of deep concentration where work / or studies flow easily so that you can do well in examinations/ and or do your work well. 1) Cut Off the Noise Getting into a state of concentration can take at least fifteen minutes. If you are getting distracted every five, you can’t possibly focus entirely on your work. Request that people don’t interrupt you when working on a big project. If you are required to answer phones and drop-in’s immediately, schedule work when the office is less busy. 2) Structure Your Environment The place you work can have an impact on your ability to focus. Try to locate yourself so you are facing potential distractions such as doors, phones or windows. This way you can take a glance to assess sounds that would otherwise break your focus. 3) Clarify Objectives Know what your goal is clearly before you start. If you aren’t sure what the end result is, the confusion will make it impossible to focus. 4) Divide Blobs. If you have a large project that needs work, clearly identify a path that you will use to get started working on it. If the sequence of actions isn’t obvious, it will be difficult to concentrate. Taking a few minutes to plan not only your end result, but the order you will complete any steps, can save hours in wasted thinking. 5) Know the Rules Get clear on what the guidelines are for the task ahead. What level of quality do you need? What standards do you need to follow? What constraints are there? If the rules aren’t clear from the outset, you will slip out of concentration as you ponder them later. 6) Set a Deadline Deadlines have both advantages and disadvantages when trying to force concentration. A deadline can make it easier to forget the non-essential and speed up your working time. If you give yourself only an hour to design a logo, you will keep it simple and avoid fiddling with extravagant designs. Time limits have disadvantages when they cause you to worry about the time you have left instead of the task itself. 7) Break down Roadblocks Roadblocks occur whenever you hit a tricky problem in your work. This can happen when you run out of ideas or your focus wavers. Break down roadblocks by brainstorming or planning on a piece of paper. Writing out your thought processes can keep you focused even if you might become frustrated. 8) Isolate Yourself Become a hermit and stay away from other people if you want to get work done. Unless your work is based on other people they will only break your focus. Create a private space and refuse to talk to anyone until your work is finished. Put a sign on your door to steer away drop-ins and don’t answer your phone. 9) Healthy Body, Sharper Mind What you put into your body affects the way you concentrate. Nobody would expect peak performance if they showed up drunk to work. But if you allow yourself to get chronic sleep deprivation, overuse stimulants like caffeine or eat dense, fatty foods your concentration will suffer. Try to cut out one of your unhealthy habits for just thirty days to see if there is a difference in your energy levels. I’ve found even small steps can create dramatic changes in my ability to focus. 10) Be Patient Before I write an article, I often sit at my desk for a fifteen or twenty minutes before I put finger on the keyboard. During this time I feel a strong urge to leave or do something else. But I know that if I am patient, I’ll stumble upon an idea to write about and enter a state of flow. Without a little patience, you can’t take advantage of flow when it rushed through you. If you need strong concentration I recommend periods of 90-120 minutes. Any less than that and you will waste too much time getting started before the flow can continue. More than this is possible to sustain focus, but you will probably benefit from a quick break. These are the general guidelines for concentration, studying well or doing your job. Regards.

Hello Doctor, my friend has recently entered into a romantic relationship. What are the things that she should never tolerate in her relationship in order to make it work? Please suggest.

M.S. Counselling and Psychotherapy
Psychologist, Bangalore
If your friend is into a romantic relationship, let her decide what she can tolerate and what she can not tolerate. She needs to decide this on the basis of what she wants from her parter and what she is ready to" give" to this relationship. There are no hard and fast rules, each one has to make individual choice, to make their own relationship work. A relationship where both the partners are" interdependent" works better. A relationship where both partners are" very dependent" or" very independent" of each other, does not work. Both the partners need to discuss it for themselves.

What to do to improve memory power and concentration in studies for my 8 year old son? Please advise.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
1. 7 Lifestyle-Based Ways to Improve Your Memory 1. Eat Right. The foods you eat ? and don't eat ? play a crucial role in your memory. ... 2. Exercise. ... 3. Stop Multitasking. ... 4. Get a Good Night's Sleep. ... 5. Play Brain Games. ... 6. Master a New Skill. ... 7. Try Mnemonic Devices. There are mind training and some memory boosting medicines also. Ask me privately. Eight Ways to Remember Anything Research-based strategies to boost your memory and keep it strong 8 Strategies for Remembering 1. Become interested in what you're learning. We're all better remembering what interests(link is external) us. Few people, for example, have a difficult time remembering the names of people they find attractive. If you're not intrinsically interested in what you're learning or trying to remember, you must find a way to become so. I have to admit I wasn't so good at this in medical school?the Krebs cycle(link is external) (I provide the link only to prove how immensely boring it is) just didn't excite me or relate to anything I found even remotely exciting. 2. Find a way to leverage your visual(link is external) memory. You'll be astounded by how much more this will enable you to remember. For example, imagine you're at a party and are introduced to five people in quick succession. How can you quickly memorize their names? Pick out a single defining visual characteristic of each person and connect it to a visual representation of their name, preferably through an action of some kind. For example, you can remember Mike who has large ears by creating a mental picture of a microphone (a "mike") clearing those big ears of wax (gross, I know?but all the more effective because of it). It requires mental effort to do this, but if you practice you'll be surprised how quickly you can come up with creative ways to generate these images. Here's another example: How often do you forget where you left your keys, your sunglasses, or your wallet? The next time you put something down somewhere, pause a moment to notice where you've placed it, and then in your mind blow it up. If you visualize the explosion in enough detail, you won't forget where you put it. Remember: Memory is predominantly visual. 3. Create a mental memory tree. If you're trying to memorize a large number of facts, find a way to relate them in your mind visually with a memory tree. 4. Associate what you're trying to learn with what you already know. It seems the more mental connections we have to a piece of information, the more successful we'll be in remembering it. This is why using mnemonics(link is external) actually improves recall(link is external). 5. Write out the items to be memorized over and over and over. Among other things, this is how I learned the names of bacteria, what infections they cause, and what antibiotics treat them. Writing out facts(link is external) in lists improves recall if you make yourself learn the lists actively instead of passively. In other words, don't just copy the list of facts you're trying to learn but actively recall each item you wish to learn and then write it down again and again and again. In doing this, you are, in effect, teaching yourself what you're trying to learn?and as all teachers know, the best way to ensure you know something is to have to teach it. This method has the added benefit of immediately showing you exactly which facts haven't made it into your long-term memory so you can focus more attention on learning them rather than wasting time reinforcing facts you already know. 6. When reading for retention, summarize each paragraph in the margin. This requires you to think about what you're reading, recycle it, and teach it to yourself again. Even take the concepts you're learning and reason forward with them; apply them to imagined novel situations, which creates more neural connections to reinforce the memory. 7. Do most of your studying in the afternoon. Though you may identify yourself as a "morning person" or "evening person" at least one study(link is external) suggests your ability to memorize isn't influenced as much by what time of day you perceive yourself to be most alert but by the time of day you actually study?afternoon appearing to be the best. 8. Get adequate sleep to consolidate and retain memories. Not just at night(link is external) after you've studied but the day before(link is external) you study as well. Far better to do this than to stay up cramming all night for an exam.

I want to reduce my weight. I have asthma and I have thyroid. I am going through lot of mental tension and I am worki...
Recheck your thyroid levels. If they are low, you will require increased thyroxine supplementation. Having low thyroid hormones makes weight loss more challenging than usual. Being an asthmatic, heavy exercise is not recommended as it may trigger attacks. However if you are on regular medication and not getting attacks frequently, start some mild form of exercise. Also, modify your diet: increase the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables, salads and reduce processed foods. Weight loss works best when you focus on diet and exercise. Try some relaxation techniques like deep breathing, meditation and yoga; these will help to reduce your stress. Ensure you are getting adequate sleep at night. Spend time with family or friends and confide in those whom you are comfortable. Indulge in any activities or hobbies that you like.

I am somewhat weak and I want to build up myself such that like that of heroes and build my body and my brain. I want to be very sharp in my studies and want to be more strong. This is my only tension. So suggest me please such that I can build my body and reduce my weight, trim my butts and etc and develop my memory without going to gym. Please suggest me fast.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
To reduce weight you have to diet and do exercises. You need to have diet plan based on your BMI & activities. Whatever we eat is metabolised by the body for the energy needed to do daily work and the excess is stored as fat. Abdomen is the first place to gain weight and last to disappear. In brief, Weight reduction can be achieved only by reducing the intake of food 1/3 of what you take now. And by appropriate exercise plans for each part like belly, thighs, legs / chest etc. To burn off fat. Some tips 1) Drink three or four cups of water whenever you feel hungry and just before eating food 2) Take boiled or raw vegetable like cucumber, carrot etc. As half of your diet. Then take 1/2 of your total diet as sprouted pulses / proteinaceous food like roti, cooked pulses and remaining with rice or other carbohydrates. Oil or ghee etc. Should be just bare minimum. And do aerobic exercises, running, jogging or at least walking briskly 3-5 KMs and swimming if possible, and in a gym if feasible. The most important is to burn off the energy intake by exercises. There is no short cut or medicines without exercise & dieting to take just as mush food as needed for your activities. The food we eat is utilised for our energy needs and the remaining will be stored as fat which leads to obesity. It is better to do some tests. A DIET CHART TimingFoods To EatCalories Early MorningLukewarm Water with Lemon 1 glass0 Tea without Sugar + 2 Biscuits90 Breakfast2 Rotis + 1/2 cup Paneer Curry330 ORBrown Bread Upma 1 plate + Milk 1 cup300 Mid-Morning1 Banana/1/2 cup Melon/20 Grapes50 LunchBrown Rice 1 cup (195 gm) + Mixed Vegetables 1/2 cup + Salad 1 bowl + Raita 1 small bowl345 EveningButter Milk 1 cup35 Dinner2 Rotis + Vegetable Soup 1 bowl + Salad 1 bowl370 Total1220/1190 Cal To lose weight, you must burn more calories than you consume. One pound equals 3,500 calories. If you cut 500 a day from your diet, you'll lose a pound a week. People who lose weight slowly, about 1 to 2 pounds per week, are more successful at keeping the weight off. You'll also burn additional calories if you increase your physical activity. You weight-loss plan should do all of the following: •Emphasize fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. •Include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. •Contain foods low in saturated fats, avoid trans fats, and limit cholesterol and salt (sodium). •Avoid refined sugars and processed foods. Some tips to help you lose weight: •Keep a food diary. Writing down everything you eat is critical! Noting how you feel when you eat will help you identify emotional triggers that may cause you to overeat. Emotional eaters tend to overeat. •Eat when you're truly hungry rather than when you're tired, anxious or stressed. •Eat slowly. If you eat too fast, you eat more than you need to satisfy your hunger. Your brain needs time to catch up with your stomach. •Plan your meals ahead of time so you make healthy choices. When dining out, check the menu online and decide what you will order before you sit down. Ask for dressings on the side. Opt for foods that are baked, broiled or steamed versus fried or swimming in creamy sauces. Avoid chips and bread baskets—they add unnecessary calories. •Stay hydrated. People often mistake thirst for hunger. •Eat breakfast. If you skip this meal, you'll be starving by lunchtime. You'll have more difficulty making healthy choices throughout the day.

Hi Doctors, I am 36 yrs old. I am addicted to smoking for almost 15 years now and smoke 15-18 cigarettes daily. Need your help and consultation to get rid of smoking entirely forever. Can it be possible? Kindly also let me know about the treatment, how long will be the expected treatment duration and cost. Kindly let me know in case any further information is needed. Thanks! Deb.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I do not know where you live. So you will need to check with the local rehabilitation facilities offered there. Yes, of course you can give up smoking at any time. The desire to want to give it up is the first positive point in your favor. You are smoking too much anyway for your own good. Stopping is urgent and important. To break the habit you need to quit it for 21 days as the first phase ? this is the most difficult phase. You must continue abstinence for another 7 weeks to make it relatively easy. After 3 years of total abstinence you can be somewhat safe. Yes, there is medication to ease quitting smoking. Please consult a doctor for the same. You have been smoking for a long time now but you can reverse almost all the damage from it by quitting now. Just keep at it till you succeed. Quitting smoking is very difficult but not impossible due to the following reasons: smoking has certain conditions for the urge to be stimulated. These can vary throughout the day. You need to de-condition around the habit. There is a physical and psychological craving that has to be countered. There are some medicines that ease the craving, for which you will need to consult a doctor. Some measures you can take are: avoid people, activities, and places where the need to smoke is highest. There is also the time of day when the urge is greater; occupy yourself with planned, alternative, and interesting activities. During all these times do deep breathing exercises. Buy some chewing gum or nicotine gum or nicotine patches to tide over the urge. Replace the conditions or associations with new behaviors to affect the drive. Frequent ?no smoking zones? when in need. Tell the whole world that you have given up smoking, and ask for support from all of them. Your oral need may increase so ?pacify? it by indulging in eating, drinking health beverages, sucking on hard candy etc. Persevere in very difficult moments by sticking to your resolution because the impulse will disappear pretty fast. Get the support of an addiction counselor to process the resolution. You may never need institutional care but get the support of a Smokers Anonymous group.

Dear memory and mind power consists of understanding, storing and recollection of information you learn. Understanding depends on concentration. The more creative you are on doing tasks or reading, the more you understand. Storage and recollection depends on your understanding and how well you review what you have learned. Repetition and review of material learned and other tasks provides easy recollection. You can improve your concentration and total brain power with the help of green leafy vegetables, exercise, creative activities, number puzzles like sudoku etc. Hard work is the key to learning and recollection. Post a private question to me and I shall provide you more tips. Take care.
