Anemia - Causes, Symptoms & Treatment Of It!

What is anemia?

Anemia is due to lack of haemoglobin in the blood which is below the normal level or due to less than normal levels of red blood cells in blood.

The haemoglobin helps carry oxygen in blood. Lack of haemoglobin thus causes deficiency of life giving oxygen to vital organs. (1-4)

Types of anemia

There are various causes of anemia. It could be due to:

  • Decreased production of RBCs in blood
  • Increased blood loss OR
  • Excessive destruction of RBCs
  • Causes of anemia
  • Anemia most commonly occurs due to nutritional problems. This includes lack of iron in the diet.
  • Iron deficiency is the commonest form of anemia.
  • In the United States 7% of toddlers ages 1 to 2 years old and 9-16% of menstruating women suffer from iron deficiency.
  • The poorer nations 30-70% of the people have iron deficiency anemia.

Iron and anemia

  • Since iron is needed for the manufacture of haemoglobin in the body its deficiency can lead to anemia.
  • Iron is found in meat, dried fruit and some vegetables.
  • Lack of iron may be caused due to bleeding especially in stomach ulcers or within the intestines.
  • Women before menopause commonly suffer from iron deficiency anemia due to heavy periods and increased demands during pregnancy.

Vitamins and anemia

  • Certain vitamins like vitamin B12 and folic acid or folate are also essential in the normal production of RBCs in blood. Their lack in diet may lead to anemia.
  • Both vitamin B12 deficiency and folate deficiency are more common in older people, affecting around 1 in 10 people above the age of 75.
  • There is an inherited condition called Pernicious anemia where patients find it difficult to use the vitamin B 12 in diet for production of healthy RBCs. This is a rare condition and affects 1 in 10,000 people in northern Europe.

Other causes of anemia

  • Increased blood loss due to surgery or major trauma may lead to anemia.
  • Excessive destruction of RBCs may occur due to certain conditions called haemolytic anemias. These are often inherited and include Sickle cell anemia, Thalassemia etc. Anemia can also occur in severe infections, cancers and due to exposure to a drug or toxin.
  • For example, the RBCs are made in bone marrow. If there is cancer in the marrows a shortage of good red blood cells results. This is called aplastic anaemia and may also occur with blood cancers like leukaemia.

Symptoms

Anemia signs and symptoms vary depending on the cause of your anemia. They may include:

At first anemia can be so mild that it goes unnoticed. But symptoms worsen as anemia worsens.

Treatment of anemia

Treatment depends on the cause of the anaemia. If the anaemia is due to a lack of iron, eating iron-rich food or iron supplements may be given. If, however, the cause of anemia is deeper like internal bleeding or cancers, the cause should be explored before treatment. When the anaemia is more severe, a blood transfusion may be prescribed.

Digestive Problems In Infants & Children - What Should You Know?

Digestive Problems in Infants & children

Digestive Problems in Infants:
Want to know all the digestive problems in infants? This article will tell you all the common digestive problems in children, and how you can deal with them. Read on…

List of Digestive Problems in Infants

Diarrhea
It is very sad and very surprising, but approximately 450 babies in the United States die due to diarrhea each year. Diarrhea is thus, one of the major digestive problems today. This can be caused due to a number of reasons. The most likely causes are change in diet, antibiotic uses and by certain infections. If the baby is still breast fed, a change in the mothers diet can also lead to diarrhea. Rehydration is said to be the best treatment for diarrhea in babies and can be done at home.

Constipation
Another common digestive problem in infants is Constipation. This digestive problem may develop again, due to change in diet, medication or even behavior. However, constipation can be diagnosed and treated at home easily. Constipation is a situation when the infant has hard bowel movements. High fiber foods and fruits work as good treatment for constipation. However, if your infant is hardly a few years old or is also suffering from rectal bleeding, consult a doctor immediately.

Vomiting
Vomiting is yet another digestive problem in infants that is highly misunderstood. Most mothers mistake spitting up for vomiting, which is normal in most infants after a meal and in company of a burp. Vomiting in infants is a result of blockage of the stomach or intestinal blockage. In slightly older infants, the cause for vomiting is usually or mostly always an infection that is caused mostly by a virus. However, vomiting is not a serious issue if it happens once due to overeating or reasons alike. But if the intensity is high and happens frequently, it should be shown to a doctor.

Baby Colic:
Baby Colic (intense crying of the infant for a said number of hours everyday) is still considered as one of the earliest known digestive problems in infants and said to be a result of abdominal pain. Though most doctors disagree to the fact and their reasons are quite believable too, this is still considered a digestive problem by many. Infants also are said to experience relief after massaging of the abdomen. This topic is still under debate and the doctor's consultation is a must. The word 'colic' too, is derived from the Greek word for intestine.

Pain:
Pain, I agree is a very general term. But there are many reasons that may cause these pains. The digestive system (including the intestines) of infants in some cases is underdeveloped. This causes many other problems apart from irregular bowel movements. Digesting certain ingredients becomes a problem like that of lactose intolerance. This may result in pain. Bladder infection and appendicitis are two other reasons that might lead to this pain but these are uncommon.

Digestive Problems in Children
Small children are affected by various digestive problems quite often. In this Buzzle article, we are talking about such problems that are most commonly found in infants and older children.

Digestive Problems in Older Children

Constipation:
In this condition, children have infrequent bowel movements. Its symptoms are hard stools, which are difficult to pass. Stool withholding, lack of fiber in diet, and side effects of medicines are the most common causes of constipation. Constipation in children can be relieved and regular bowel movements can be restored by including lots of fiber-rich foods in their diet.

Diarrhea:
Diarrhea in children is mostly triggered by bacterial or viral infection. It can be a symptom of an undetected disease of the digestive system. It is identified with watery stools occurring 3 or more times a day, abdominal pain, nausea, bloating, and dehydration. Diarrhea can be acute or chronic. In acute cases, these symptoms last for one or two days. On the other hand, chronic diarrhea is more serious and persist for several days. In this condition, the treatment involves replenishment of lost fluids with the help of rehydrating solution and avoiding all such foods that cause stomach irritation.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):
This can be described as abnormal functioning of the bowel. Due to this abnormality, the intestines fail to contract properly to promote bowel movements. As a result, one gets diarrhea and constipation alternately. Irritable bowel syndrome makes the intestines highly sensitive towards gas and causes abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, etc. Irritable bowel syndrome in children cannot be cured completely, but its symptoms can be treated with the help of suitable medicines and dietary changes.

Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome:
This can be described as a sudden bout of excessive vomiting that lasts for a few hours or days and tends to recur after a short period. The characteristics and duration of each episode of vomiting syndrome remains the same. The exact cause of this digestive problem is still not clearly known. Its treatment includes medicines for controlling vomiting and nausea, and adequate rest and sleep.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):
This is a condition in which the stomach acids flow back into the esophagus and cause a lot of irritation in that area. A small amount of these acids released into the esophagus is a common occurrence in both, adults and children, and does not cause any harm. However, when a large amount of acids flow back into the esophagus, its lining gets damaged and causes a lot of discomfort. Heartburn, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing food, wheezing, etc., are some of the commonly observed symptoms of acid reflux disease. The treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms. Sometimes, following a GERD diet can bring about improvement in the condition and in other cases medicines are needed to control acid production in the stomach.

Tips to Keep Children Healthy:
-Teach your child the importance of a healthy routine. The day should always begin with a healthy breakfast. Help the child to understand why breakfast times are important for the day. You can make a chart of different breakfast recipes and tell him/her the importance of the many vital nutrients for one's body.

-Fruits and green vegetables are important for a healthy diet. Your child should know why fruits score over packaged foods. You need to include fresh fruits during breakfast times or slip one in the lunchbox. Make it interesting by having fresh fruit juices or salads to break the monotony.

-Children are not aware about many things that are very important for their growth. As parents, you must ensure that your child has plenty of water and fluids during the day. Fluids should include fresh juices. Make sure your child carries a bottle of fresh juices to school.

-Kids should know the importance of exercise at an early age itself. Teach kids a few basic exercises that can be done at home. An exercise routine that incorporates walking or swimming can help children to manage these activities on a daily basis. As they grow up, these routines will naturally form a part of their life.

-Children should also be aware of hygiene-related issues. Youngsters should learn things such as the need to wash hands before and after meals. For young kids, you can simply use a singsong routine to get them into the process. Children will then surely make this a part of their routine once they understand the importance of personal hygiene.

-Dental care should begin at an early age. Brushing teeth twice daily is needed to keep them looking healthy and clean. You can promise to read a bedtime story for a kid that does not really enjoy a brushing routine. Make it seem enjoyable rather than making the child feel punished.

-As your child grows older, you can help him/her maintain a chart on foods to be avoided on a regular basis. It is important that the child knows that indulgence in foods high in sugar is fine once in a while, but should not be done on a regular basis. Avoid being too stern if your kid wants to enjoy foods such as french fries and ice cream, simply teach him/her how to be smart and consume such foods only occasionally.

-Your child may require a daily dose of vitamins if the diet does not include the required amount. Make sure you check with your doctor about the vitamin intake to give the right amount of doses. There are many vitamin tablets packed in attractive containers. Generally, kids believe they eat candy instead of medicines due to the innovatively packed products that are available these days. There can also be alternative ways to include food items rich in vitamins in your kid's diet. Your doctor would be the best judge to decide upon the diet plan.

-Parents also need to make sure their children get the appropriate amount of sleep. The child needs a healthy balance of activities and play. Sometimes, children take a long time to fall asleep. You can read a bedtime story or simply speak to the child softly, which will help him/her fall asleep naturally. This will help children to stay in good health and remain active during the day.

Hypothyroidism - Symptoms, Causes & Homeopathic Treatment Of It!

Hypothyroidism - Symptoms, Causes & Homeopathic Treatment Of It!

What is  thyroid gland?

The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped endocrine gland that is normally located in the lower front of the neck. The thyroid’s job is to make thyroid hormones, which are secreted into the blood and then carried to every tissue in the body. Thyroid hormone helps the body use energy, stay warm and keep the brain, heart, muscles, and other organs working as they should.

What is hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid gland. Hypothyroidism means that the thyroid gland can’t make enough thyroid hormone to keep the body running normally. People are hypothyroid if they have too little thyroid hormone in the blood. Common causes are autoimmune disease, surgical removal of the thyroid, and radiation treatment.

SYMPTOMS

When thyroid hormones levels are too low, the body’s cells cant get enough thyroid hormones and the body’s process starts slowing down. As the body slows down you may notice that

-You feel cold
 you get tiered easily
-Your skin gets drier
-You become forgetfull and depressed
-You start getting constipation
-You get sleep more
-Your periods become irregular
-You r hair fall increases
-You start weight gain

CAUSES

EMOTIONAL CAUSES: Like depressesion, continuous grief, suppressed anger, sudden death of an closed one, contnous dominations

• Autoimmune disease: in some people’s bodies, the immune system that protects the body from invading infections can mistake thyroid gland cells and their enzymes for invaders and can attack them. Then there aren’t enough thyroid cells and enzymes left to make enough thyroid hormone. This is more common in women than men. Autoimmune thyroiditis can begin suddenly or it can develop slowly over years. The most common forms are Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and atrophic thyroiditis.

Surgical removal of part or all of the thyroid gland.

Some people with thyroid nodules, thyroid cancer, or graves’ disease need to have part or all of their thyroid removed. if the whole thyroid is removed, people will definitely become hypothyroid. if part of the gland is left, it may be able to make enough thyroid hormone to keep blood levels normal

Radiation treatment.
•    Congenital hypothyroidism (hypothyroidism that a baby is born with)
•    Thyroiditis
•    Too much or too little iodine: The thyroid gland must have iodine to make thyroid hormone. iodine comes into the body in food and travels through the blood to the thyroidKeeping thyroid hormone production in balance requires the right amount of iodine. Taking in too much iodine can cause or worsen hypothyroidism
•    Damage to the pituitary gland: . The pituitary, the “master gland,” tells the thyroid how much hormone to makeWhen thepituitary is damaged by a tumor, radiation, or surgery, it may no longer be able to give the thyroid instructions, and the thyroid may stop making enough hormone.

How is hypothyroidism diagnosed?

The correct diagnosis of hypothyroidism depends on the following:

You should tell your doctor:
•     about changes in your health that suggest that your body is slowing down;
•     if you’ve ever had thyroid surgery
•     if you’ve ever had radiation to your neck to treat cancer
•     if you’re taking any of the medicines that can cause hypothyroidism - amiodarone, lithium, interferon alpha, interleukin 2, and maybe thalidomide
•     whether any of your family members have thyroid disease.

Physical exam

The doctor will check your thyroid gland and look for changes such as dry skin, swelling, slower reflexes, and a slower heart rate

Blood tests

There are two blood tests that are used in the diagnosis of hypothyroidism:

TSH AND T 4

How is hypothyroidism treated In HOMOEOPATHY?

But in almost every patient, hypothyroidism can be completely cured.

It is treated  in homeopathy by constitutional medications which activates thyroid gland and which initiates release oh thyroid hormones ie t4 and tsh. to bring your T4 and TSH back to normal levels. Thus constitutional homeopathic medications  restore your body’s thyroid hormone levels and your body’s function.

Developmental Disabilities In Children - What Should You Know?

Developmental Disabilities In Children - What Should You Know?

Development disabilities can be defined as chronic conditions which develop when the brain of a child is still forming. Developmental disabilities may occur during pregnancy or early childhood or they may occur anytime till a person attains the age of twenty two. They are birth defects which may hamper the proper functioning of a body part or a body system. Most of the developmental disabilities cannot be medically treated, however with therapy their symptoms can definitely be controlled.

Nervous System Disabilities:-

As the name suggests, nervous system disabilities affect the functioning of the nervous system, spinal cord as well as the brain. A child with nervous system disabilities is most likely to suffer from speech disorders, behavioral disorders, movement disorders and may experience convulsions. His learning, understanding and intelligence, might all be affected due to nervous system disabilities.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD):-

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can be identified in children by their inability to concentrate, being forgetful and feeling hyperactive all the time. There are a number of ADHD causes such as changes or malfunctioning of certain brain structures, parents suffering from hypertension or a psychiatric disturbance, chemical poisoning, alcoholism, smoking or drug abuse by the woman when she is pregnant and lastly, exposure of the child to certain environmental toxins like lead, polychlorinated biphenyls, etc.

Autism:-

Another example of nervous system disabilities is autism. Various behavioral and speech disorders may be caused in a child due to autism. Although exact cause of autism is not known, still some researchers are of the opinion that it may be caused due to certain genetic, environmental and neural development factors. Differences in the brain chemicals, known as neurotransmitters are the main cause behind autism. Environmental factors such as exposure to certain chemicals, exposure to drugs, eating certain kind of foods can exacerbate this condition.

Cerebral Palsy:-

Most cases of cerebral palsy develop even before the child is born. Very rarely does it occur during childbirth, although if the baby is premature or is under weight and suffers from intraventricular hemorrhages, it can lead to development of this condition in him. But mostly this condition develops when the brain development of the unborn child is affected when the mother is alcoholic, smokes, takes drugs, is malnourished, is exposed to certain chemicals or suffers any mental of physical trauma when she is pregnant. Some other reasons for a child to develop cerebral palsy are any injury to the brain due to accident, asphyxia, bacterial infections such as encephalitis or exposure to certain chemicals and allergies.

Bipolar Disorder:-

The reason why this disorder develops in a person is not known, still studies have shown that it is hereditary and runs in families. A person suffering from bipolar disorder experiences four kinds of mood cycles - mania, hypomania, depression and a mixed episode. Typical symptoms range from a person feeling highly energetic to falling into deep depression, leading to development of suicidal thoughts.

Dyslexia:-

Dyslexia is a neurological disorder that makes a child incapable to understand language, differentiate between right and left, solve mathematical problems and lastly, organize and plan anything. This condition is caused when the brain is unable to transfer images it receives from the eyes and ears into comprehensible language.

Dyscalculia:-

This is another disability that is closely associated with dyslexia. In this condition, a child is unable to recognize numbers and thus can't solve mathematical problems. This condition is caused due to an injury to the brain or a deficit in the working memory. Inability to read maps and follow directions are some other consequences of dyscalculia.

Dysgraphia:-

A child suffering from Dysgraphia is unable to write alphabets or sentences in order. Dysgraphia symptoms develop in a child when his motor development does not take place properly.

Fragile X Syndrome:-

Fragile X syndrome occurs when FMR-1 gene/protein is unable to participate as required for the healthy and normal development of the offspring, resulting in numerous changes in his emotional, mental, physical and behavioral features.

Down Syndrome:-

Down syndrome is a chromosomal disorder caused due to an extra 21st chromosome, resulting in mental retardation as well as malformation in a newly born child.

Metabolic Disorders:-

These birth defects affect the body's metabolism i.e. the processes involved in building up, breaking and assimilating the materials required by the body to function properly. Phenylketonuria and hypothyroidism are examples of a metabolic disorder which can cause intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Phenylketonuria:-

Phenylketonuria, a genetic disorder, occurs when the body is unable to process the phenylalanine (Phe) protein found in almost all kinds of foods. If the Phe level becomes very high, the brain of the child can get damaged and he may even suffer from mental retardation.

Hypothyroidism:-

Another example of metabolic disorders is a hormonal condition known as Hypothyroidism. In this condition, the thyroid gland is unable to produce some very important hormones. If this disorder is not treated in time, it can lead to obesity, infertility, joint pain and even heart disease.

Sensory-related Disabilities:-

Sensory-related disabilities, a major part of the development disabilities list, are those which can cause problems related to sight and hearing. Some examples of sensory related disabilities are Williams syndrome and congenital rubella syndrome.

Congenital Rubella Syndrome:-

Congenital rubella syndrome is caused when the rubella virus negatively affects the fetus, mostly during the first trimester of pregnancy. A child who has congenital rubella might be deaf and may even have cataracts in the eye.

Williams Syndrome:-

Williams syndrome is a condition which occurs when some of the genes might be missing in a newborn child. Some of the symptoms of this rare condition are learning disorders, sensitivity to loud music, attention deficit disorder, sunken chest and feeding problems such as vomiting or reflux.

Degenerative Disorders:-

Degenerative disorders usually develop at an older age and the newborns who suffer from such disorders may show no signs at all. Degenerative disorders are known to cause physical, sensory and mental defects in a person. An example of degenerative disorder is Rett syndrome.

Rett Syndrome:-

Mostly girls suffer from this disorder. In the initial stages, the sufferer displays normal growth patterns but later there will be slowing down of brain growth, inability to use hands properly, problems in walking, slow mental growth and the sufferer may experience seizures.
