Advice For A Breastfeeding Mom

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS

Advice For A Breastfeeding Mom
Health advice for a breastfeeding mom

Breastfeeding mothers need to be conscious and aware of their diets. How the mother eats is how the child gets its nutrition. While they do not need any major changes from what they were eating during the pregnancy, a few adjustments are advised. A few basic adjustments in daily routine are enough. They are:

1. Eat very well - Eat a balanced diet to suit your health. Remember, first it is important to meet your nutritional needs. Only when you are eating well would the quality and quantity of your milk be ideal for your baby. Do not diet under any circumstance. We understand you wish to lose all the pregnancy weight soon, but remember, you child is your priority now. When you diet, your body will start drawing on its reserves. This will affect milk production. By dieting, you will also lack the amount of stamina you need to take care of your baby. Be aware that feeling extra hungry during breastfeeding is normal. Your body is working around the clock. Eat small meals at regular intervals to keep your hunger satisfied, your weight concern at bay and your body strong.

2. Don't count your calories - Not until you are breastfeeding. You need at least 500 calories more than you did when you were not breastfeeding. Don't let this shock you, your child will be feeding off you. There are other ways to regulate your weight and lose the extra pounds gained during pregnancy, do not compromise on food at all.

3. Do not rush to exercise - Consult your doctor and ask for suitable exercises for your body. You might have stitches which are yet to dry, so don't be hasty. Get your workout regime planned professionally and under guidance.

4. Do not avoid fats - Eat healthy foods and opt for good fats. Foods that are good for you and for milk production are a big yes. Foods which do not contribute in any positive way can be done without. They will only harm you in the long run.

5. Avoid alcohol - Stay away, and if you do want to indulge consult your doctor. An occasional drink is usually okay, still it is better you abstain altogether until you stop breastfeeding. And if you do have a drink, feed at least after two hours.

Dear Sir/ madam, I have blessed with a daughter on 14. 10. 2016, just 5 days before. Her bilirubin (Total) shows 12. 2. Is it dangerous for her? What is the control (specified) limit for bilirubin (jaundice) in new born babies? What to do now for her treatment? Some doctors suggested for sun bath & antibiotic injections (half dose twice a day) for 5 days, is it safe for a 5 days baby girl? Please suggest, I'm very nervous.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Yu have to tell her weight to see if the bilirubin is in normal range as it is related to weight when we take decision. Sun bath is fine and this is not at dangerou level if she is is adequately big . It is called physiological jaundice and is seen many babies . On fifth day 12 mg./dl is not serious

From history your daughter is suffering from recurrent tonsillitis. Avoid cold drinks, ice-cream, chocolates, cream biscuits etc.Tonsillectomy is required after 5 yrs of age if your child suffers from recurrent tonsillitis.

My daughter is 4 years old and her skin is sensitive to insect bites (Mostly Mosquito). She develops bumps and rashes after bite. She can’t stop rubbing it again and again which converts it to a wound and in many places in her hand and leg she has black patch for this. Is there a medicine which will help reducing the sensitivity and what is the best medicine for after bite.

MD - Dermatology, MBBS
Dermatologist, Mumbai
My daughter is 4 years old and her skin is sensitive to insect bites (Mostly Mosquito). She develops bumps and rashes...
Hello, protection from mosquitos is the best solution. Make her wear full sleeves clothes. Apply mosquito repellant creams or patches on clothes. After the bite, apply an antibiotic cream like fucidin cream on the wound twice a day. Apply dermocalm or calosoft lotion on the rash as and when it gets itchy. Her sensitivity may reduce as she grows older.

Dear Dr. I am facing a problem of lactation for 3 days although I am not pregnant Is this a serious problem I have been taking antidepressant for 9 months and recently took norethisterone. Please help.

Some antidepressants do cause galactorrhoea (breast milk discharge). You need to get your serum prolactin levels checked .it's a blood test done in fasting. There are medications to cure it.

The baby is 49 days old. Previously he is suffering from cough from last 2 weeks and now keeps crying for no reason. ...
Reason of crying of children are diffrents. Why your baby crying is due to hunger or abdominal pain or any bite or any other pain or infection first it is rule out by doctor. And take treatment according to that. Upto that give him koflet syrup 2 ml thrice in day. And you take normal diet like chapati subji and avoid fruits.
